Great topic.
I think that KFC had a lot to do with the problems on ifrit in terms of accomplishments. Before the Claim fix there was NO ENDGAME for any NA players... resulting in people who quit, as well as leaving endgame shells starving for HNM experience. ....
Exactly right. I've been playing since the PC release and I have seen the frustration players have shown with this whole mess. We've been cock-blocked by asshole JPs with bots, just because they want to slow us down and grief us. This interference is not something Square planned for, they never expected one group to keep camping every single spawn for 2+ years.
Since this problem went unresolved for such a long time, there's a massive bottleneck of NA trying get the loot they've been waiting for. There's a finite rate of gear dropping from Kings, and that's causing the backup to grow with every passing day.
What really contributes to this problem is the unique design of FFXI, that you can level multiple jobs on the same character. Since there is a limited rate of gear dropping from mobs, and more and more people are leveling multiple jobs, there is a growing shortage of Rare/Ex gear. As people level every job, they want a copy of every nice piece of Rare/Ex gear to go with it. This can be easily seen because the prices of good gear (despite a continuous generation of more and more pieces of that gear by drops or crafting) are still high. Sure RMT has artificially increased the prices on occasion, but the fact remains the demand for such gear is not going down as fast as it has in other games.
The hatred we have for each other is most definitely spawned from this frustration and resulting jealousy. This jealousy and hatred has even gone so far as to encourage people to cheat and do whatever they can to get this gear, defeating the very purpose of this game. If you hack to get gear, what's the point? You may as well just hack the game so you never die, beat everything, and finally quit.
Personally, I believe they could fix this game if the moved away from a claim based system for all mobs. There are other ways to make gear difficult (but not impossible) to obtain, why not make the mobs more challenging? or make more point oriented stuff like we have with assault? I've beaten most of the mobs in this game with my LS, and the ones I haven't are usually because of claim issues or simply hard limits like dynamis entry delays.
