Post subject:  Why do you play FFXI?

I'm curious to see why people play the game now. For fun, For Work, for the fellowship - or a combination of them.

Over the years, I've seen the game change so much - esp. from Beta to Release, then PS2 release, then CoP, then XBox / ToAU. It seems as though many people start the game one way, and then by the end (we shall call it the end) have a totally different attitude towards it. The game itself has changed so dramatically that even SE recognizes it and are trying to correct something they didn't purposefully cause (although are partly to blame) - it's the people who play that can make the biggest difference.

I just wonder how people were when they first began, and how they see the game now.

Personally, I've tried to keep thinking the same way. Although there did come a point in time where the game became my life, I soon realized that that's all it was - a game. A game can not take the place or RL because it doesn't live in the same world we do. When you begin to play a game for something other than entertainment - IMO it's time to stop and take a good look at life and how you live it.

I played for my friends really. Honestly I know for sure if it wasn't for talisin and yarr i wouldn't have played as long as i did. I would have eventually quit out of sheer boredom.

The real question is the question you eventually have ask yourself.

Why do you yourself continue to play?

Ask yourself why?

Ask yourself what goal you have.

Ask yourself what do you forward to.

Some people take the reasoning for playing MMOs too seriously. They should just be for fun, like any other game.

I would have to agree. Once you come to realization that "IT'S JUST A GAME" then your perception totally changes.

But you cant bypass the hot chicks that flirt with you either

Yaw! I played for the guys who played Mithras, pretended to be girls, and said things in party chat like "what color panties should I wear today?"

I played for entertainment. My rl has always been really good, and I'm a happy person. No need for an escape. Sadly this game forced me to stop talking to people and become anti-social for a while. I'm glad I got over that! I've quit and come back so many times...and every time I came back I would play less and less, and take the game less seriously.

This is what always made me quit. Too many people have accepted the fact their lives revolve around this game. Once that happens you have a serious problem. I would eventually think hard about it (while rushing home from work for Dynamis worried I'm going to be late), and feel rather pathetic lol. I'm so glad I'm not sucked into that shit anymore.

while i still did play wasnt really for the gear, loot, equipment, being the "uberest" if thats even a fucking word..

i mainly played to kill time.. and bullshit with people.. help them out or whatever.. i never really had a goal or agenda for myself.

now that i quit.. well.. life's better.

I played for the friends. (que squishy lovelove music)

no srsly. I started playing because it was ZOMG NEW FINAL FNATASY!!!111 for me at the time, but the friends I made through the game, and the friends I already had that got into it were the best experience for me...It was a way to connect with people all over the world, and have fun experiences with each other, sometimes when real physical contact wasnt possible.

A really good friend of mine went to California for school, and I had gotten them into FFXI before they left, and it wound up being such a good thing because we were able to still talk and have fun, by the time he came back after a year, we were like "OMG remember when we totally pwnt (insert NM)?!?!?!"

It was as if we had just seen each other a week before, and made it easier to cope with a good friend leaving.

In the end that feeling is what really kept me playing for the time I did.

...Then I found out you guys are all asshats and quit.
