Well I was going through some of my old FFXI screen shots when I realized that these are 10 years old now. So I thought it would be fun to start a thread and post screen shots on their 10 year anniversary.


Today's screen shot is the birth of CKD. 10 years ago today Pirotess took a spaz and kicked me from Hokuten. I truly enjoyed pissing off Pirotess and the best way to do that was to make him feel unwanted or unpopular. I created the CobraKaiDojo pearl long before I joined Hokuten with the intention of emulating the CKD from Dark Ages of Camelot. In DAoC the CKD guild was a small group of elitist assholes that didn't need help from anyone on the server, so we intentionally pissed everyone off.
Hokuten was a huge LS and it had a great group of end game players like Koda, Ilma, Kayne, HCC, Vurin and a few others. We were all starting to hit the level cap and a few people like Vurin and Koda were starting to do HMNs with Japanese friends. They were also talking about how Japanese players made linkshells dedicated to just doing HNMs. This is when I took the opportunity to engineer a fight between Pirotess and I. The intention was to piss him off enough that he would kick me from the LS. This would make it easier to get people to join CKD since Piro was the asshole and I was just the unlucky victim of his most recent blow up. This way people didn't feel bad about leaving the Hokuten to come to CKD. I had a much harder time convincing people outside of Hokuten to join CKD. It took me like a week to convince Peejo to have her perma group join. That's how I landed Sir Reinheld.

Anyway here's the screen shot for today.




I really do regret how things turned out with Ilma and HCC. I knew they were hacking almost as soon as they started, but I ended up using their hacking as the platform to blow up CKD so I could quit FFXI in piece. I wish HCC and Ilma were playing FFXIV with us. I did take things with HCC way too far so I don't blame him for holding a grudge against me.

I wanted to post this even though its not 10 years to the day.


This is a screen shot from April 24th 2004. This was the first time Whisp quit FFXI. What's really funny about this screen shot is that 10 years later Whisp and I are talking on VC and he's telling me that he's "basically quitting" since his real life responsibilities are overpowering his play time. Whisp can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this is the same reason he quit 10 years ago.

Funny to think that CKD was created only 3 days later.

Im going to continue to post screen shots as they hit the 10 year mark. I have tons of awesome screen shots. Its about 5000ish screen shots all from Fraps so they have the date right on the file name.

I often go through them at random. I just happen to stumble on the CKD origins screen shot a few weeks ago. Feels like I've been waiting forever to post it.

This was one of my favorite parts of the origin missions. The Shadow Lord fight was super easy, but it was a lot of fun. This is an interesting screen shot because its before Mikey and Talisin were friends. This screen shot also reminds me of how awesome Shiloh was. Its a shame he passed away. I have so many screen shots with him in it. I even have a long video of me convincing him to join CKD. I didn't know I was recording.

Im about 90% sure that this was the first time I met Noodle. I always remember noodle from this group and how the lag made it look like he was killing himself. I didn't XP much outside of my perma, so partying with a bard was rare. My perma group had Whisp and I doing dual WHM roles. It was a retarded setup, but it worked really well until we got into the level 50ish range. I think.

I'm a little sad that I don't have any screenshots backed up from XI.
The character models are all a little scary looking now to me, it's amazing that this game is still going on.

Gotta love those PS2 resolution pics. If I knew back then how much better this game looked on PC, I would have re-thunk my life.

I still wish I could time travel back to 2004 and re-live the FFXI glory days again. That game in it's prime was the most enjoyable gaming/entertainment experience of my life...by far.

yah those where some good times. always excited to get a party that lasted for like 1-3 hours. I remember ridere helping me with all the AF quest cause my linkshell was a small linkshell :P

I have a lot of fond memories of FFXI.

But... and this is a big but, I don't think I'd enjoy playing a game like that now adays. Not being able to do anything in the game without five friends is just crazy. Sure, college Ryan could skip a few classes and grind out that delicious exp in the Boyahda Tree. But old, corporate stiff Ryan wants to come home after work and do some lighter content that is more of a stress relief than a stress-inducer.

The idea of spending 3 hours a night attempting to get a claim on King Behemoth, and to ultimately end up with another linkshell getting the claim just seems like it'd be absolutely painful. haha

I think I'd rather just leave FFXI as fond memories, though I will say that the friendships we created in there, as a result of needing to always do things with other people, did end up with neat things, like this forum, and thus our FF14 family.

It is a shame the cliquey attitude that 14 has fostered.
