I remember seeing screen shots back when I was playing DAoC and just thinking how amazing the design of the game was. When I first loaded up the beta I remember just running around with my jaw hanging. I mean, coming from a game like DAoC, FFXI was amazing.

However, the one thing that just made me fall in love with this game was the quest\mission system. The cutscene's blew me away.

What was it that really knocked off your socks?

For that one reason, the graphics were pretty gewd and 6/10 of my friends started playing it.

then i saw a galka, just fell in love all over again.

The expansiveness once I got outside into East Sarutabaruta and wanting to explore further after I leveled up more. I remember going into Tahrongi in a PT and when I saw the crag I ran to it and tried for about 45 minutes to find out how to get inside haha.

It was an episode in the Final Fantasy Saga... that's all it took for me.

Always loved Final Fantasy.

Actually I didn't get FF till about a week after it had been out in the NA. My friend got it and wanted me to get it too... I was hesitant but then I went over and saw him play it and was hooked. I had a week late start and was still in the 50+ Jan 1 club lol... and I still don't have a 75 job... oh well.

When I found out it would come out for PC I looked up some more info about it and saw this picture of a taru playing a flute.

I was sold then.

Well my bro. bought FFXI and I didn't plan on playing it until I saw the scenery. I thought the forest in Sandy was pretty, and the Orc camp looked scary, and I like scary things  . So I decided to give it a try.

I thought the game was pretty cool when I first got it. Being from Windurst, the scenery was pretty nice, but it got dull after a while. I'd have to say that the first thing that impressed me was the first time that I ventured to San d'Oria. I was in total awe of that city, I don't know why, but it became one of my favorite places in the game.

Just the sheer size of it is what impressed me most, so much details that we all now take for granted.

The vastness of just how big the vitual world was had my head spinning. I had been playing Socom 2 and the maps were cool but, it was kinda of like playing on a football field. I started in Sandy and I remember the first time I ran "all the way" to the Crag in La Thiene and grabbed a crystal and thought man this is far.

Yeah I was really first impressed with the fact that it looked very Final Fantasy-ish. I mean, playing another MMO again (WoW) made me realize the smaller FF-like details, such as the camera swinging into a different "Battle Mode" and things like that.

And the summons.

The first chocobo I saw. Also like Yarr, I am very impressed with the cutscenes of the missions.

... The fact that I can experience an extreme sense of nostalgia from an online video game. That was the most overwhelming thing about this game for me. For example, looking back in Giddeus and telling myself when I was a wee WHM8 n00blets, that'd I'd go back and kill all the Yagudo as a Summoner (and I did too). The size and scale of the game was the first "impressive" thing about it for me though, like traveling to Jeuno for the first time and having seen the trees in La Theine. I was like "omg normal looking trees! We don't have those in Sarutabaruta!" Damn these threads, stop making them you nostalgic old fogey, Yarr.

The detail in the armor was amazing to me after DAoC. I still think its awesome.

I cant believe I forgot this but....

The smooth and amazing looking animations. In DAoC people ran around like they had a sick up their ass and they moved alot faster then the run animation was. Stuff like that bugs me haha

I simply loved the whole idea of an huge online RPG, being my first. Running around Windurst after installing beta was just simply amazing.

the first thing that impressed me, when i first entered vanadiel as an elvaan thief in north sandoria (near where the sandoria escort NPC is now), is the size of the world. how long it takes to walk from one place to another. it was a positive & negative at the same time but i was very impressed by it. the biggest game i had played before this, in terms of walking distance, would have to be diablo2.

in fact it took me about 5 to 10 minutes to learn how to walk. i did not know you could use the keyboard, so i used the mouse to move (blame diablo2). i also couldn't figure out how to log out for about an hour. after TS finally helped me access the menu feature, i didn't realize until about an hour later, serendipitously, that there was a 2nd column of menu options.

I was initially impressed on how polite everyone was to each other. Whisp and I had just finished playing Diablo 2 for a couple months, where everyone is like "FuCK U n00b!" and then they PK you and steal your loot with no remorse. I thought all online games were like that, but those first few days on FFXI, you could immediately see this game was different. The community feel was very cool.

Also I love, love, love the job system. I spent hours researching the best combinations. After picking a couple of lame elvaans, Whisp and I went back to the drawing board and picked two jobs and two races that complimented each other, Taru WHM and Galka DRG, which ended up being one of the better duos in the game (other than two bsts).

I'll never forget when I was trying to get my AF vest I read online that it would take a full party of lvl 60s to beat the mobs that dropped the coffer key in Ifrit's Cauldren. Well, Whisp and I went there to investigate, and the bees there conned T-VT to us at lvl 58. Too make a long story short, we basically kicked some bee ass and got the key drop, with just the two of us. That is one of my favorite FF memories.

I'm a long time FF head. But, for some reason I was pretty hesitant about playing FFXI. After seeing screenshots all over the place, the adventurer in me gave in and I started playing. What really made me fall in love was the epic feel to it. The game was so huge and it took me forever to level past the dunes. It was then I realized that I had only yet experienced a small corner of Vana'diel, and my hunger for even bigger adventure grew.
