Post subject:  the new generation

I know I make a lot of these "back in the early days, we did things like this..." remarks, but something bothered me today about the new generation of FFXI players. You all know about the constant shouts in Lower Jeuno by players in there 50s and 60s wanting help on coffer key hunts, missions, quests, and anything else thats remotely challenging during that period of the game. I know alot of high-lvl players like to lend a hand, and I don't have a problem with that (I've answered a few of those shouts and helped out just for fun), but I think some players are forgetting that it's the challenge of the game that makes it fun.

I heard a mid-lvl dragoon shouting in Jeuno "{help me out!} {dragoon} {artifact} {hunt} {Ifrit's Cauldren}", and being a little partial to dragoons, I decided to help out. I mean c'mon, the Ifrit's Cauldren key will get you the AF body, which is a total thrill for any dragoon. So I told him, "let's go get your key." To which he responds "I have my key already, just need coffer." Hmmm. He wanted a high lvl person to hold his hand doing something that can be solo'd with a little bit of skill. Almost all dragoons have a mage sub, or they can buy items, so sneak/invis is covered. Plus there are maps detailing the coffer spawn points online. I explained all this, and the dragoon claimed he didn't have a printer. I said who cares! Draw the friggun map if you have to, whats the fun in this game if you bypass any challenge!

So he gave me one of these "~.~" and I told him good luck. I admit I got alot of help from high-lvls while lvling my second character, but back in the day we figured things out for ourselves because there were no high-lvl NAs. I guess there isnt a real comraderie between newbies of the same lvl-range anymore, so it's hard to group up and help each other out on coffer-hunts and stuff. I'm not against high-lvls helping out lowbie friends, but people like that dragoon puzzle me. And it appears to be the growing trend. And also PL'ers are getting to be standard between lvl 1-50, which scares me because this new generation doesn't know how to play their jobs to the fullest.

I agree.

These newbies have no idea how damn easy they have it. I mean we still had a very limited supply of help from japanese players, but for the most part we did it on our own.

I remember how damn hard it was to get my sub job items. I remember people were quitting over it cause it was so hard.

You sure as hell dont see that anymore.

lol I remeber doing my BLM AF it was a pain in the ass because I had no clue where to go and there were no high lvls to just run kill a bunch of mobs so I could get my key and I had to hunt the coffers by myself. I had to go with a group of lvl 52-60's. Also there was NO power levelers when I was doing BLM so ppl have gotten lucky.

I have to agree with both TS and Yarr. The old days we had to work for everything we have accomplished. The days of subjob and coffer hunting were trials but are completing them it made you feel you accomplished something. I remember de-leveling 3 times for my Old Gauntlets for my DRK AF but once I found them I was filled with pride.

As I level my BST I have to go in strange areas but along the way I see how the world has changed. People flaunt their gil to buy the uber gear and don't understand the semantics of the race. I see P-Levelers in all the low-level zones and it perturbs me because I never had that leveling up.

As I level my lower jobs and I'm invited to a party a P-Lvl is there I quickly disband. It's not an accomplishment knowing that I don't have to heal my pt member because some 65+ player is doing my job. Leveling my WHM is because I'm learning my job. To have a plvl it just seems just as bad as buying gil or botting becuase it doesn't have that same feeling of accomplishment.

Geting to 50 with my BST was no easy task but I did it without the help of people and it makes me proud. I may not have a LV75 job but since playing since the US launch, the game has changed much even for myself.

I don't think it was that hard to get SJ items, but of course, someone /shouted that they had an extra skull (which was especially rare during the early days!) and I got lucky.

haha Yeah i don;t wanna sound liek an old man but serously yeah it has Changed. My jobs like brd sam drg war<- (took me 2-3 months to get to 30 from release) had never had a pl attached to it. Nowa days you can't lvl to 30 without some one haveing a PL there. whne i was doing Sam AF you better believe how hard it was to dind out what to Even do. there kept bementions this Deamon hand or something in Ever Af quest and i don;t Remeber any Deamon hand being used haha. all of my Coffer keys were with like Same grp of ppl that you made a pact to help Each other getting the keys. over all i think it's about 50% easyier to xp and get gil then way back in the day.

Btw: O.Kotes 350k
Signa 300k
Sniper Rings 200k i believe
Light dark staff ect like 1 mill plus
Emp hair pin 500k

It was like all of a sudden ppl got gil and prices went up huge.

limit break 1...the thing that made tons of people give up and quit, lol.

Image

I think we had like 6 or 7 to get heh...and i remember it took forever. Like 8-10 people, no one over lvl 50 :P

I had fun doing all those things the hard way though. I did get really lucky with all of my dragoon AF coffers though. quicksands...get key in exp parties, coffer was kinda hard to find just going from a printed map, died twice i think. boyada...get key in exp party again...the coffer popped underneath of us while fighting, lol. ifrit's..got my key in 3 kills, checked one spawn point, and the coffer was there. kuftal for af3 quest, was randomly running through..and there is was. I remember the NM tiger for my af pants being realy hard though. I had 5 people lvl 52-54, and dragged along some lvl 60 rdm named runefury to help haha. the NMs for the helmet were hard too, i had a few highlvl people say they wouldn't help unless i had a lvl 75 tank because it was so hard... I went in with 12 people, only one over lvl 60. Had a 59pld tank, and only a ~57rdm and ~67 rdm to heal, and we still managed. Now i doubt anyone would even attempt an AF quest without at least 4-6 people lvl 75...

Leveling warrior and getting AF and shit has been a lot easier than dragoon...obviously. Getting coffer keys didn't require more than asking 2-3 friends and an hour or two. Seeing people have it that easy on their first job I don't really like though.

I need someone to PL the rest of my subjobs though :P

I remember when my warrior was around 30, I saw that sniper rings were like 100k, and i was hoping that i would have that much money by the time my drg was 40 to wear them. By the time i got there...they were 300k and climbing lol. I also used to camp emp hairpin heh. The first two i got, i sold for 210k and 230k...sigh

and now i'm tired, sleep now.

I'll agree with the lowbies now becoming high to mid lvl newbs, they lack respect, discipline and an overall appreciation for earning things. However I am sure a few of us were just as stupid at 1 point in time lol. Endgame is even worse, at endgame, people are bored and figure out other ways to just mess with other players, promote their mouth or e-penis, and the pride of earning items in endgame (the rare/ex) abjs eventually just lead people to gloat that they got what they wanted and beat the game and quit. They quit attending events, they quit logging in, they quit sky, and they quit what is now no longer fun for them to do. Despite this, for a player to quit it feels a bit like a betrayal slightly because people that still play could have used those items and we all worked so hard for them, however I could never blame an individual directly for quitting, good for them I say, they are getting on and doing other stuff and atm, that seems like a really good thing. FFXI is now in the market decline stage as any idiot can buy/sell gill and lvl. Many of the old-school is no more, I can't even count how many have quit due to the BS drama of just a game, the gill selling, the gill buying, the attitude of others and the overall mockery of what this game is now. Some people would never be where they are today if it wasn't for a few others. Today we judge quickly and harshly others. We don't allow players to mature and /blist and burn bridges. Some can do this, but after a while they get burned too and catch crap for it. As for me I just play man, I just play. Seeking for hours on end is also prevalent now as people screw themselves by outleveling others depending on certain jobs they choose. When an individual seeks for 3-4 hours now it is no wonder we see the afk seeking that is so prevalent, the frustration of after 30 minutes of getting a PT together someone has to go, etc. etc. Unless you truly want to keep passing the time all your lvls, jobs, etc. seem so stupid. I sigh everytime I even look at my playclock and wonder sometimes how else I could be spending such time. The only things important to me now that keep me playing are the friends we make, the storyline (quests, ranks, zilart, CoP, dynamis), everything we have earned on Ifrit as a community together. I keep playing because I have a few goals that are important to me, as do you. I think unless I can play with friends that I actually know, or if I can't have 100% control or have to spend 90% of my time helping or depending on others, have to pay xxx amt. of $$$$ a month, then MMORPG is not the genre for me anymore. So until the day I wake up and say "F" FFXI, this game was something more than a game to me, it was an experience. It had its high and low moments, but I think it will be my 1st and last MMORPG.

land Kings: more drama for items that are botted by JPs big deal, its just a monster and I could care less anymore about them, so you're a NA that didn't get a koenig body, join the club : p. Once you become the most powerful lvl as 1 job then you move to another anyway, its never enough for some ppl, what you lack in any equipment you can more than make up for it in skill, in the players that back you or your lack thereof.

I agree. One of the huge pains for me is random people who just send me a tell asking for something. That's why I stay anon pretty much full time. But that doesn't even help because people check my equipment then ask for help.

Three examples from the last week:

Random person: "Hey come kill Garuda for me."
Me: "Sorry, logging off soon."
Random: "Aw come on."
Me: "Can't anyway, already have the whisper."
Random: "So turn it in and get the quest again."
Me: "No, I'm working on Moon Bauble. Besides you have to wait 24 hours irl to get the quest again after turning in the whisper."
Random: "You just don't want to help."

Other Random person (who btw had a Chinese name):

Random: "Give me linkpearl."
Me: "Sorry no."
Random: "Why not?"
Me: "HNMLS, level 70+ only."
Random: "Give me pearl."
Me: "No, if you have a level 70+ job you can apply."

And the last fun one...

I'm leveling my second job, BLM, and recently hit the level 50 stage, so several players I've been around did not have LB1 completed. We were putting a party together and one of the guys said he didnt want to go because he needs bomb coal. I said that was a pretty quick drop so lets go get it and you'll be able to level longer. We head to Garlaige, get the bomb coal, everyone runs or warps back to Jeuno. He goes to turn it in and says "Oh, I can't complete the quest, I need two more items. Where do I get exoray mold and ancient papyrus." Oof...at least he didn't drop the party to go get the other items. Then I would have been really mad.

One more comment...the people who want help to get their AF, never seem to want to help anyone else. Back when I got AF for Red Mage, we all paused leveling for quite a while because we all had to help get each other AF, so you didn't just do your own, you usually helped get AF for a lot of other players. I had a few high level friends but mostly everyone around the AF level just helped each other get it.

Hmm. Yeah, all the above is true, but there is still hope. Maybe...

Last night I was fishing on the boat and saw a rank 1 level 9 rdm with no subjob. He was so damn cute. He was afraid to come up out of the basement because the sea horror had killed him on his way to the dunes on the previous ride. So I killed the sea monk that was scaring him and told him to come up. I fished and he stood by me and we talked. He told me how hard the dunes were and that he had been level 10 there but deleveled a few time and gave up for the night. I /checked him and he had about half his armor pieces empty. I smiled and remembered when I was that way. He said something about how he wished he could fish on the boat but knew he die if he tried. So... I gave him one of my fishing rods, a shrimp lure and 10k. (Sorry, Matti. Can you make me some more? lol)

He didn't ask me for anything and was totally shocked that I was nice to him. I'm hoping that he will remember this random act of kindness and maybe, someday, he will pass it on to someone in need.

Maybe people are getting spoiled, but a lot of people are also very selfish with their time/willingness to help people. omg people! (Gather together.) and be helpful and nice and maybe we can still change this stuff. haha... I'm kidding; it's probably hopeless, but I'm still going to dream.

I didn't mean to imply I don't help people. I actually try to help people a lot. Like TS, I've gone to help random people when I had time just for fun. I just don't like the recent attitude I've seen where people ask for help, never even say please, don't invest time and energy into researching what they want to do anyway or are just plain rude. Why would I help a rude person? I also invest a lot of time in helping friends...one of the great joys for me now is helping friends who quit and just got their accounts back. That's what keeps me from quitting

Like Centhea I not against helping people. I was waiting for a BST Duo partner @49 near Valkurm Dunes. A random warrior sends MT's asking for help on a Magicked Skull. He was waiting for a friend that hadn't logged in to help get the skull and I insisted that I helped.

We traveled to Gusgen Mines because it was daylight. We talked about my old experiences leveling up, subjob hunting, AF seraching and it was fun tellling him my experiences. When we get to Gusgen I pull out a Funguarfamiliar and start killing skelllies in 3hits, Funguar in 2hits (- -;).

After a few minutes, a skull pops and I pass on it. He thanked me offered a reward but I passed (Along the way I killed 3 Tremor Rams and the Horns alone were reward enough lol). The event put a smile on my face IRL becuase I was happy to help someone out and end the end I had a new person on my Friend List.

i remember going through the dunes for like the fourth time and at that time, the "power level" crap was beginning, i used to make all of my pt's because i couldnt stand the the pt's other noobs made. i couldnt do that anymore because no one would join unless i had a PL, almost like it was required. it jes blew me away how lazy the low lvl ppl are now compared to back then.

Lazy not only with leveling, but also with getting their own information. I can classify myself as a mid generation. I started last Easter, so I've been on for a while. I don't know all the hardships that the beginning people had, but I did have to work for all my stuff.

I'm thoroughly disgusted at all the noobies who want everyone to hold their hand and wipe their ass. As mentioned before, a PL is required, or even one is called in if the XP isn't going superfast. I like to make my own parties because half of the ones that are slapped together with a PL suck. They completely ignore the fact that they can't kill the mob, but soley rely on the fact that they have high level help.

Not only that, but there are a lot of people who won't even do their damn research. As it stands now, you can go on one of the many database sites (mysterytour, allakhazam, somepage) and find the information that you need to either complete a quest or such. I find myself more often than none looking up the information for someone else because they're too damn lazy to get it themself. Call this cheating if you will, but it's just a game, and I don't find it fun to run around circles in Fei'Yin trying to find the ??? for my teleport scroll or the spawn locations of a treasure chest. Look it up for shit sake, it's not that hard.

Well....When I started FFXI, I made a mithra character and a WHM at that (Too Weak). Anyway...I wanted to be different since all mithra's were supposed to start at Windy (That was what I was told), anyway...I have a mithra mule in bastok still and I occasionally will venture out looking for other Mithras that have just started the game. From time to time Ill meet some that are soo lost but are so nice. I have run across some people ( Level 3-5 with no sub job) that would offer to team-up to help each other and learn the game together since I would act like Iam a beginning player. I noticed some would have equip missing due to no gil. Anyway...for those people that were very nice and never asked for anything except to help each other learn this game together reminded me of when I started...wanting just to help each other to progress. Neverless...due to those people who were kind and unselfish, I hooked them up with some gil and food..etc and reminded them to continue being a helpful and not to turn into those rude asshole newbs that are running around these days.
