Lets figure this out. Is it the xping? Making friends? Discovering new things (Areas, Abilites, Spells)? Maybe a little bit of everything? Before you answer try to think about what you hate about MMORPGs. |

PvP. The people make it fun. The people make it addictive. If there weren't thousands of other people playing then no one would be in a rush to 75 (or 60) and no one would care if they had uber gear because who would you show off to? FFXI became more of a social thing than a game to me. I would log in just to talk to friends which is part of the reason I quit when CKD broke up - I lost a lot of good friends over stupid shit. |

What I like about MMORPGs is discovering new things. I love to just walk around and look for areas and things I have never seen before. And I love to go to areas which are like to high for me but because I want to explore them I just take the risk. btw, CKD broke up? and no...I am not a retard. I am just busy with work and studies and havent really followed the whole thing...I am not really allowed to visit the forums at nintendo XD.. |

I dont think friendship has ever been a big deal to me in MMOs. I made some great friends but really the bread of "friendship" in an MMO are pretty different than any irl friends. I think mikey is the closest thing I made to a "real" friend since he came down to see canada and visit for a while. I can now say for sure that if I would be friends with mikey had I met him outside of the game. Although his SF2 Trash Talking skills blows monkey ass. I also was one of those people who always tried to get 100% completion in games. Maxing stats in FF games, getting all the secrets in Zelda. Getting all the gear and so on. I never had any other friends all that into video games (tal and I actually never played games together, he never was "big" into games until recently) Edit: I say this about friends from MMOs because as great as they are, they come and go faster than "normal" friends. When you stop playing an MMO theres like a 99% chance that in a year from that time you wont be talking to any friends from that game. That is unless they go to a new game with you or so on. I guess the "entertainment" value is there, but i never logged in because I wanted some social interaction. |

People. FFXI is just one big chat engine, the things to do are a means to generate new things to talk about. Think about how many in-game friends you have that you continue to talk to via forums, internet chat or even became RL friends. If I log in and my linkshell is empty/full of afk people I usually seek and fall asleep within 30 minutes |

Yeah, interaction with other players make this game a joy to play or a complete hell to login. Without the interaction, this game would be no different than a game offline. I find the real life connections to this game to be the most interesting; if you are an asshole to someone, you will be treated like an asshole and so on. Also, having obstacles to overcome that require assistance from complete strangers to you irl make this game a challenge to play. |

I dislike exping, camping NMs, skilling up, farming...um...crafting, pretty much dislike all the tedious stuff. There is a lot of things that irritate me about FFXI (my first and last MMORPG), and the bad probably outweigh the good. The reason I play is friends. I know they aren't my "real" friends (Conker and Pancho are the only two people I would meet irl). But it's still fun to chat with people online and go do quests and stuff with them. I really like all the people in my linkshell. If I wasn't in it...I probably wouldn't play. As much as I hate camping, exping, etc...I have fun doing those things with my LS. And I LOVE ToA. I'm having so much fun exploring the new areas and doing quests/missions. Haven't had this much fun playing in a really long time. |

MMO's are fun because people can make forums and make cheesy threads like this. ![]() |

I've been trying to find that answer for awhile. I can't really come to a conclusion that's good enough. I have no fucking clue why they're fun. They might not be "fun" at all. I don't know why I play them. |

k Yarr, you solve the mystery for us, please. Anyway, I'll agree with the people thing. And I like being able to customize my character. And, er. Yea. |

I'm not sure why I like MMO's. Then again, I'm not sure why I like cold showers or slamming my dick in the door. Actually, I don't like any of those things. Some people just like watching numbers go up I guess. I know I sure as hell used to. |

hmmm the reason i like to play mmo is because well you get to play with other ppl. Non of my friends are into games especially mmos like i am so i get bored most of the time when i play other games. mmo just make it more fun i guess. in the begening is when the game is mos fun, when you start meeting new ppl and explore things for the first time. like yarr said pretty good chance you will end you not talking to ppl from game after a year or so, but I made a good friend during my ffxi experience and no we talk over phone and shit so its all good^^ |

I made a ton of friend in high school, but I never talked to 98% of them after. Same thing happened when college ended. I don't think it's really different for a mmorpg. Most of them will disapears in a space time vortex, but there will always be one or two who will still talk to you many years after. |
