Few series are highly respected in Japan. There's Mario, Zelda, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and then there's one that has seemed to eclipse them all... Pokemon. Basically a license to print money, Nintendo has proven once again with Pokemon Diamond/Peral that they know exactly what the Japanese consumer wants. Released this past week, the game has already managed to sell 813,237 units of Diamond and 762,029 units of Pearl. That's only from Sunday to Thursday! This is the best first week sales for the series ever at 1,575,266 units.
So will Diamond and Pearl be able to be the fastest selling game to 3M units in Japan, dethroning Dragon Quest VIII, the current king of the mountain, with a record of 23 days ... well, that's still up in the air. While the game is already half way there, it has already peaked in terms of the amount of single day sales. It's now when the series' legs will truly be put to the test, because while 18 days is a lot of time... 1,424,734 unit of Diamond and Pearl is a lot to move. One thing is for sure -- we'll know soon enough either way.
