Quote:
"According to a new Famitsu Marketing survey, Sony's PlayStation Portable is getting walloped in Japan by Nintendo's DS. In November alone, the PSP sold a mere 86,000 units compared to nearly 550,000 DS Lites. More shocking are numbers for the first 11 months of the year, which show that Nintendo may have all but closed the door on PSP in Japan. The DS and DS Lite have sold more than 7.5 million units so far this year, with PSP selling just 1.6 million units.

Further troubling for Sony's portable system are its software sales in comparison to Nintendo. PSP has sold 2.8 million games to date this year, while Nintendo has sold 27 million games. This is what is referred to in business as a clobbering.

The battle is a bit closer in the U.S., though Nintendo retains a strong lead month-to-month. In November, likely the busiest sales month of the year, twice as many DS Lites were sold as PSPs.

Publicly, Sony has shown nothing but confidence for the future of the PSP. Despite having weaker sales numbers compared to DS, the PSP had a strong year in terms of quality software. Nine of the twelve PSP games to receive a 9.0 or higher from IGN were released in 2006.

I think the whole rivalry between the two has all but been decided, so it's not as much fun to make fun of the PSP anymore.

On a side note I haven't bought a new DS game in like 8 months. Last one was Advance Wars. I've mostly been playing GBA games for a while (FFIVa>Castlevania CotM>Fire Emblem>FFVa). Should be getting FFIII for xmas though. All hail DS!

lol
and yeah DS so far isn't as strong as GBA in terms of game quality but it definitely trumps PSP. Don't forget to pick up Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin.

yea its a known fact now that ds is beating psp. There are a couple of games on psp that are very worthwhile. THe gta games for starters, vice city stories is freaken huge. And metal gear solid portable ops, brings a real full metal gear game on the portable scene.

I noticed someting when i was in toysrus yesterday, the ds really does appeal to all age groups. I saw a 60+ year old jewis guy playing pokemon on a ds. Its rather funny to see him enjoying himself.

I am not a Sony hater at all, I actually really like Sony products. I loved the PS1, PS2, and I do want a PS3. My PS2 (early model) has more gaming hours on it than every system I've ever owned combined. For some reason...I don't want a PSP at all. I think it's cool you can watch movies, surf the net, and download music to it. But I would never use it for that stuff. I listen to music on my IPOD, and I "can" watch movies on it but I don't. If I owned a PSP I would only use it for playing emulated NES games using the old software. I don't really like any of the games out for it, and load time annoys the shit out of me on handheld for some reason.

DS is fucking awesome. I love the games I've played, and there is still a ton more I want. I also love my GBA. Those are the 2 best hand held gaming systems I've ever played. There is no doubt PSP has better graphics, but DS has better games IMO.

What a shocker.

The thing I dislike the most about the PSP is the emphasis on the multimedia aspects of it. I don't care that it plays music or movies, or surfing the internet. I have other things to do that, and the only time I'd be using the internet browser on it would be at home when I have a PC to do that with.

And like Ponuh said, most of the games are crappy PS2 ports which is why the idiots buy PSPs buy them as well.

See thats what bothers me lol. Because if you don't really pay attention the ds is just as guilty of that line too. Shoddy ports check. Ports in general check..
Mario 64? A port
Mario Kart A port..
Animal crossing a goddamn port
Final fantasy.. 3 umm, a remake, however still a port..
Yoshi's island.. Um ok do you see where i'm going at here?
How many of you dickfaces actually played Super princess peach? Is that what you want in games?

Even with minor additions you really can't dare say the psp is full of ports when your other portable option has them too.
Granted the Ds has original titles coming on it, but so does the psp.
The thing the ds has over the psp is that is centralized on games and thats it. Sony's mistake was pushing the psp to fight against every other product including ipod ( the music market leader) and nintendo ( the father of portable gaming)

The potenial of the psp is really awesome. And believe it or not Nintendo does need healthy competion to stay on its toes. It really is necessary for another option in the portable market to be available. Otherwise well go into a boring drought, much like we saw with the gameboy advance to sp transition. Full of super nintendo ports and not much of anything in between. So basically the psp pushes nintendo to push themselves, giving them and everyone a push and need to work towards making betters games.

So far the best the psp has right now is
Tekken
Lumines 2
Locoroco
Metal gear solid portable Ops ( Freaken amazing! btw)
Gta ( As much as you think its a port... Its not.. Both of them have their own new storylines. ANd vice city stories is freaken huge. Too many things to do with almost no load times.
Syphon Filter ( feels like a ps2 game, the controls are hot and the game deserved more attention than it got)
Street fighter alpha 3 ( hotness )
Megaman x OMFG a remake!
Ghouls and ghost a remake too but everything's been updated. ANd the game is hard as hell lol.

What it does need is more rpgs, the namco Tales series has been selling fairly well in japan, i just wished they'd bring em over here.

Both systems in my opinion are great. But i've bought gameboy's before, and i've lost interest extremely quickly. It is my opinion though. However I do know alot of people whom own portable systems, that seem to loose interest in games very very quickly.

Anyway rant off lol.

FF3 is not a port. A port is a direct transfer of the game, FF3 is definitely not a port, and it's only a "remake" of a game that NEVER CAME OUT IN AMERICA. The only problem DS has is the same problem as current console systems: the best games are sequels in old/continuing series. Metroid, Mario, Zelda, Mario kart, advance wars, castlevania, fire emblem, etc.

DS is not meant to be a portable Gamecube, psp is meant to be a portable ps2. This is where the difference is and why the games have probably always been great on gameboy systems, the fact that nintendo treats it as its own completely separate universe and puts hard work into the games.

the ds is basically a portable n64 the ideals are the same in a sense.
Yea i agree that because the psp is spread out so much with different functions the company doesn't seem to clearly focus entirely on the games which it should.

I wouldn't say the psp is meant to be a portable ps2, especially with what sony did just before the system was released. The ps2 has a 333 mhz graphics processor, the psp HAD ( keyword there) a 333mhz graphics chip too. However due to battery consumption concerns they locked it at 233mhz. So bascially the system is running with its hands tied down and not being fully maxed.

I think sony needs to really start focusing on the psp and ps3, they're spreading themselves way to thinly. The battery fiasco and ps3 production problems and stupid retarded psp commericals are starting to show that sony is growing week, this transtioning period in the console wars.

The DS can play music and games if you know how to coax it. Plus, the two screens + touch screen + fun is better than 1 joystick + messed up square + ugly. imo.

Yeah Mikey ps3 commercials are awful and run way too often. I've seen the wii commercial with the japanese dudes playing wii with the farmers twice in over a month, and seen the assortment of god-awful crying demon babydoll ps3 commercial more than 15.

ohh those commericals are even worst. The ps3 commericals, i was originally talking about the psp dirt squierls and shit. What the hell was that about? The wii commercials are friendly and inviting. Which serves the message. On top of that if you notice, you'll see adults playing. Something of an image change for nintendo. Which is really good.

The wii is for sure gonna change things. I mean it already started and look at the ripple its causing.

Heres a pie chart that shows how the market is split in Japan based on Company.

sony needs to just go back to how they did the rachect series game commericals and such. No evil babies no blank white walls. Show the games.

Hell make a WWP3D situational campaigns. What would your playstation 3 do ? Show actual games, show people playing them.
God that psp commercial with this guy looking for his girlfriend sucks, its dumb.

If it makes you feel better, they did show gameplay of Resistance, but it started out like all the other PS3 commercials. I've seen 4 of them air back to back. I think they're spending too much on advertising when its flopping to begin with.

And I don't recall seeing any Wii commercials and hardly any DS ones. I think I've seen the old Castlevania game commerical and the FFIII one.

Ive seen lots of Wii comercials.

However, most of all, Ive seen lots of shows plugging the Wii. Ellen and Dr. Phil both had it on a "this years big gift".
