StarCraft MMO blasts into orbit
Blizzard's new sci-fi MMO is set to rock the world later this month, CVG has learned

The long-rumoured new instalment of Blizzard's massive StarCraft series is set to be unveiled later this month - and it's another massively-multiplayer online game in the style of World of Warcraft, CVG can reveal.

Well placed US sources have revealed to us that the StarCraft MMO will be unveiled at an upcoming Blizzard event on May 19 in South Korea - the epicentre of the sci-fi RTS series' rabid fandom.

The unveiling of the new instalment has previously been rumoured for the South Korea event, though we now know that the title is in fact an online spin-off and not a new RTS game as previously assumed.

Of course this is massive news for both Vivendi and the MMO world; Blizzard's other online offering World of Warcraft has topped 6 million subscribers and is arguably the biggest game around today.

The question is, is there room for both World of Warcraft and a StarCraft MMO? The later will have to be a very different type of online game to convince gamers to subscribe to both of Blizzard's pair.

We will of course let you know as soon as soon as Blizzard officially confirms the game on May 19.

I would have liked to see another RTS before the MMO though. Gay.

well as much as I'm inclined to trust this source, this ONE source has been posted across the universe four million times in the last 24 hours. Why is everyone going to just trust this one, dinky website? Wouldn't you want to leak news like this to a website that people have heard of?

Anyways, if it's true the next years of my life are officially going to be wasted

edit: Also, the article doesn't even have the correct number of subscribers for WoW. It's well over 8 million now. Maybe they should double check that with their well-placed US source within blizzard haha

There are a lot of people that like the idea of a Starcraft MMO or new RTS game. So, it's not suprising that news like that, even if it's not completely true, is spreading like fire. I've been waiting on news like this for a long time although I think it's come a little too late, haha I really don't need to get sucked into something like that.

This makes very little business sense for Blizzard. Someone on SA said the term was "cannibalizing". Blizzard is cannablizing its own market, spending at least 100 million dollars on a project that would simply eat away at a consumer base that already feeds it.

It's like when Coke released C2. C2 didn't net Coke any new drinkers, but instead was consumed by people who already drank Coke or Diet Coke. So they ended up just spending money developing and marketing something to people who already buy a different coke product.

Yeah, that is kinda true, haha It already boasts the biggest base for MMO subscribers, and putting up another project as big as "World of starcraft" or whatever would probably be mostly made up of WoW refugees. I figured it's why they weren't developing starcraft as heavily as the Warcraft franchise since technically it's all Blizzard needs right now I'd guess. Most likely Warcraft is going to have to run it's course before we see anything Starcraft related released, however, I think it easily has the potential to be as big as (if not more popular) than WoW. After ten years it name still has recognition among gamers, that's pretty amazing if you think about it for that one game, haha

Regardless it'll probably be at least two years before we see a release date getting close, lol

I disagree, theres a lot of people who think that WoW is a great game but cant get past the zany graphics. If Starcraft uses a new engine thats updated and more aesthetically pleasing to the average joe, they can pull in a decent chunk a change. On top of still being able to charge all the people who will play both games at the same time.

I guarantee that's not true. "A lot" would have to constitute millions and millions of NEW players.

Im with Ponuh on this one. Im not sure I trust this source. I also think they will make a new RTS in the form of SC2 and then make a MMORPG based on the new story line from SC2.

That would make a lot more sense. An RTS has far less maitenence than an MMO and it would also be smart to test the audience for another starcraft game.. much less an MMO.

Who said a starcraft MMO had to pull in "millions of million's" of new customers? Last I checked, having 2+ million subscribers doesnt mean the game is a failure. And even then, almost everyone who is playing WoW now would look into purchasing starcraft. Even if only 25% of them did, you already have 2 million players right there.

People would leave WoW for WoS and essentially Blizzard wouldn't get any new customers for twice the effort towards two MMOs is kinda the point being made. It's true some people might play both games, but I don't think anyone would do that for long, haha

Im sure there would be a lot of people who arnt playing wow that would give it a run. Its silly to think there would be no new users. I mean I would try it and Im not playing wow.

World of Warcraft was by far the most expensive MMO ever created. Starcraft would be even more expensive. 2 million subscribers isn't a good benchmark for a blizzard game.

I agree with Ponuh on the management of a business and the cannibalizing part, but people always jump on "the new shit" now. So if Blizzard brings out a Starcraft MMO, although a bit unwise in business, it may even revive itself with individuals that have grown sick of Wow and cancelled accounts or provide an alternative for their current loyal gamers.

It's almost a good decision as well as a bad one should this be true and Blizzard decides to take the gamble.
