First off, talking to gaming site Next-Gen.biz, the Xbox Live Arcade group manager Greg Canessa talked about the retro game "Virtual Console" download service the Revolution will have:

"I think it was interesting to see Nintendo's announcement for the Revolution downloadable games service which, of course, came over a year after we launched our initiative internally and around nine months after we already launched the first generation of Arcade for Xbox. I think it was a responsive move. Their service is interesting in sort of a 'retro' way, but I view Arcade as being so much more than what they're planning on doing. Their service is kind of a subset of what we're doing...

"When I look at Nintendo Revolution's retro story, with all due respect to Nintendo, I think it's a small subset of the opportunity here. To be honest with you, a lot of those games are fun in your head when you think, 'Oh, yeah when I was 12, this was really fun,' and you have these great nostalgic reasons to play them. Then you do play them, and they're just not very fun anymore. But, there are some games like Joust or Gauntlet or Pac-Man that are as fun today as they were back then. A lot of those Nintendo games, you know, aren't gonna hold up."

Meanwhile in an EGM interview posted here on gaming site 1UP.com, Microsft bigwig Peter Moore had these slightly more positive comments about the controller:

I found it very intriguing, and I'm always a big fan of companies that try and innovate in a space where we need to do things a little differently. It still remains to be seen [how well it'll do], because there's no game to demo against it yet, to get a feel for it, but I still respect and admire the fact that they're willing to take what is clearly a huge risk to innovate. Let's see if it works out for them.

Finally, Microsoft head honcho Bill Gates was asked if he wished Microsoft had come up with the idea for the Nintendo Revolution controller.

Uh...no. [Laughs] We'll watch and see. Holding two different things like that? Anyway, Nintendo... you've got to give it to them. They march to the beat of a different drummer. Sometimes that makes them incredibly right and sometimes that makes them incredibly wrong. They're certainly making a very different bet in terms of how much they're putting into the graphics this time. I do think there is a question as to whether they can get outside the young age bracket at all. That's been tough for them.

Let's see if they're still saying the same thing this time next year...

oh god

lolololololol.

Look at MS trying to pretend that Nintendo is ripping of their Xbox live arcade idea. Pac man is classic fun, but mario and other nintendo games arnt.

LOL

Seriously. I cant get myself to buy Xbox based on the fact that I am supporting a company like this when I do.

Microsoft is a poison to the gaming world. They make games to make money.

Yarr, all companies make games to make money. Seriously Nintendo tries to sell old remakes of NES and SNES games for GBA... that is all about bleeding money from a stone and they are the first company to try that shit. No Nintendo console prior to Revolution even has been backwards compatible in any way. Xbox360 only has limited backwards compatability, but at least it has it. Nintendo games do hold up over time just as well as crap like Joust and Pac-man.

Nintendo doing this on Revolution will piss on the shitty ass arcade games Xbox Live has at the moment. Too bad Nintendo doesn't have online multiplayer though in most of their newest games... FFXI will be on Xbox360 (beta is already out in stores). Wouldn't be surprised if there is at least one more MMO coming out for 360 either. So while Revolution will offer free downloadable versions of games they have been trying to sell us to make money on GBA... Xbox360 will sell new games playable online and old ass arcade games.

Yeah but nintendo is always taking a chance to make something totally new. MS hasnt had any new and unique games. Nintendo has had many. DS it self was a pretty big chance that seems to have made a huge pay off.

I hope the rev's new controller does just as well.

New games from Nintendo and not from MS? Nintendo doesn't rehash Zelda, Mario, and Metroid games? Please. Nintendo has made a new different controller, but they are in no way different than any other gaming company. They release sequels and they do it to make money. Wind Waker was a shitty Ocarina of Time wanna be.. stupid boat instead of Epona. Now they are coming out with yet another similar type game to Ocarina of Time, but they are going with more realistic graphics and using Epona... OMG just what the Fanbois asked for!

Still where is the new in that at all? Mario Sunshine wasn't exactly like Mario64 with a waterpack.. but it wasn't alot more than a graphical upgrade. Everyone praises Metroid:Prime.. it was a cool game, but the constant examining eventually ruined the pacing of the game for me. The original Metroid was about puzzles and fights.. the examining shit thing was an annoying gotta collect them all Pokemon bullshit thing. Fuck that. You can do cutscenes to tell a story or make it interactive.. not have me read some bullshit and have to click on them all to do something. Talk about tedium.

Nintendo has come up with very little new shit for years.. I remember all the games they made on Gamecube being released in a similar predecessor on N64.... Metroid was the sole exception as it there happened to not be a 3D Metroid on N64. Hopefully this new controller will change the way 3D Nintendo games work.. if it doesn't then it is another Ocarina of Time ripoff.. and another Mario64 ripoff.. then another Super Smash Brothers game... then another Metroid:Prime type game.

Mario sunshine wasn't good, but Wind Waker was awesome >_> It was one of the best looking I've played. I agree some part were flawed, like repetitive boat ride, but despite that, it was still an innovative game graphic wise.

Beside Halo, I don't think XBox made anything worthwhile. Everything else was generic sport/racing game or shooter. I guess I could give Ninja gaiden some credit for copying Devil May cry and doing as well (if not better), but meh, not much to add there.

That's not entirely true. Did you ever watch E3 2002 trailer of Zelda. It was more a teaser than anything to show GC power, but they probably had that "adult looking" Zelda in mind for a while. Many people start crying when they saw new look, but that doesn't mind they didn't intend to go in that direction already.

We will see how the new Zelda will be, but if they really implement everything they are talking about, I think they did way more than a graphic rehash.[/quote]

yeah nintendo makes sequels a whole lot, they usually have something unique though and innovative about them, if they don't they are just very high quality games

Xbox sucked outside of Ninja Gaiden (better than DMC imo), Halo, and Halo 2. Knights of the Republic was later ported to PC so yeah that wasn't exclusive. Shinobi was for PS2 and wasn't really a good game (SEGA is failing). I saw the the pre GC footage of the adult looking link. That is what Nintendo teased their audience with. That was expected of them, then they delivered the cartoon style Wind Waker (Ocarina of Time with different graphics and boat riding omg). Same targeting system as before.. same types of weapons (no huge ass sword or adult Link at all) Yeah those were some new fucking ideas all right lol... I don't give a fuck about them pioneering Cell Shaded graphics... BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T.... Did you ever see Jet Grind Radio for Dreamcast? Or the later game that launched for Xbox.. that had Cell Shaded graphics way before fucking Wind Waker.. so where is the innovation there? There is none.

Jet Grind Radio Cel shade looked like bland polygon, not cel shade :P. Personally, I never got impressed by cel shade graphic until Zelda. Dark Cloud 2 wasn't bad I guess, but game sucked anyway. Beside that, I don't remember any game that did good use of Cel shade.

It's true the gameplay didn't change much, but I don't think it's bad either. Zelda game always offer a huge world, which is usually fun to explore. There is always a ton of quest and minigame as well a few interesting bosses fight. When I pick a new Zelda game, I'm not expecting a different gameplay, or story. I just want to play a game that isn't lacking in any gameplay element, like its predecessor. Beside Majora Mask (it wasn't that bad, but way too short), I don't think any Zelda failled to deliver a quality game.

The only reason franchisea exist is because they are exploiting a winning formula. There is no reason to change it if it works. Innovation is what I expect from a new game.

Just because you didn't like SEGA's version of cel shading, doesn't mean that Nintendo innovated anything. SEGA did it first, Nintendo made it brighter and annoying. Yes Wind Waker looked better than Jet Grind. It should since it came out almost a year after Jet Grind Radio did for Dreamcast. Take a year to make better graphics on a type of technology someone already pioneered? All I am trying to point out is that Nintendo doesn't do much more in the pioneering department than anyone else.

I hope the Revolution controller lives up to its billing as changing console gaming gameplay forever. To me it is like Nintendo read that people thought the mouse was better for FPS games and certain applications... so they made a mouse you could use in mid air (which is innovation). This is also a wireless controller.. and the Wavebird kicked ass so the wireless on it will be good. Xbox360 is expensive and the PS3 is supposed to cost even more. Nintendo will have a cheaper console with a new type of controller. The games will have not much better graphics than Gamecube I bet.

MS bought Rare.. then they grabbed the people behind Crono Trigger from Square (Mistwalker Studios). They are trying to compete by buying out the competition pretty much. Console wars will end up Sony vs. MS.... Nintendo will be drowned by the competition's massive amounts of money and ability to buy up the best developers. They will go the way of SEGA and make games for MS and Sony systems. Why? Because if they make anything different or good... MS or Sony will pay their people more to do it for them (Sony ganking Square with EA's help from Nintendo, or the MS ganking SE employees for Mistwalker and buying Rare from Nintendo). Maybe Nintendo was right in selling Rare and that the developer is dried up. Doubt it though.

nintendo selling rare i thought was a bad idea at first, but they arent putting out that many or high quality games in this generation, even star fox was kind of lame...Nintendo was probably smart in doing this, probably made a ton of money

Nintendo isnt like sega either, they make tons of money each year, sega just made its first profit since genesis in 2003

It's not because I hate Sega way of doing cel shade, it's just that cheap cel-shade are easy as hell to make. We made some in my Computer graphic class last semester, and I doubt what they did on dreamcast was much harder.

Zelda on the other hand gave me a "how in hell did they coded those effect" impression. I'm not even sure if it's fair to call that cel shade.

Cel shadelike the one used in Jet Grind are old as hell. OpenGL library have those effects for years.

Wth..when did that happen? Mistwalker is made by FF dude I thought, not CT?

Wind Waker looked like ass. It just had brighter colors than SEGA had in Jet Grind, and it came out over a year after. The only reason I put up with it is because of the artwork and the overall system of the game (pretty much the same as Ocarina of Time but the lame ass boat shit). Cell Shaded was new to console graphics at the time of Jet Grind Radio or w/e. Still doesn't fall under being innovative. Just because you liked it, doesn't mean it was new to console gaming. Nah Mistwalker is the guy behind FF.. I was wrong up there.. Just Blue Dragon has art by Akira Toriyama.. and is coded by Hironobu Sakaguchi. Mistwalker's site is http://www.mistwalker.info/index.html too bad it is mostly in JP lol.

I liked Rare. I mean they did wonders for the SNES with Donkey Kong Country and Killer Instinct. The Arcades were much better. KI and KI2 are my favorite fighting games of all time (arcade versions).

Rare just started to flop with NGC came out. Star Fox adventures just wasnt interesting. I just couldnt get into it. It was just to.. bleh.

However, should Rare announce a new Killer Instinct (or clone) for xbox 320, or a true arcade port. I will tell you right now that I will buy a Xbox360 with in seconds.

Assuming its possible to even buy an xbox360 at this point lol.

Its funny how at first everyone was like OMGXBOX360SOPOPULARNOONECANGETONE and now its like. Good god, microsoft sucks, they cant even get the product on the shelves.

It's not because I liked it or not, it has nothing to do with that. I was simply impressed by the Cel shade they made. I can guarantee you they went through a lot more trouble than any other company to give us that kinda of cel shade.

You can hate the game if you want, but you cannot say they didn't put any effort in it. I'm fine with people not liking the result, but it doesn't fall in the "lack of innovation" category.

Just because there was 3d before Doom 3 doesn't mean Doom 3 3D effect aren't innovative in a way. Maybe it's not the best exemple, but it's something similar with Wind Waker.

Rare fail for never making another Conquer games. This was one of the greatest game I've played. Multiplayer was really fun, and story was just too funny.

Yeah they just redid Conker for Xbox and added online multiplayer over Xbox Live with better graphics. The multiplayer was a decent touch though.

No I liked Wind Waker. I just don't think it was new or innovative in any shape or form. It was another 3d Zelda game that was riding on a relatively new fad in console game graphics. Cel Shaded graphics were a trend (one Nintendo didn't start), a trend that I hope is over. Yeah do not mention Doom 3 because it sucked ass and HL2 was a much better game overall. Doom 3 type bump mapping was beaten to the punch by Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay for Xbox (it was released before Doom 3 was). That was a great game, and the PC version which came out later was good also.

I am sick of the same old shit in games with updated graphics. That controller better be good that is for sure. I was really disappointed in all 3 of the major consoles of the last generation.... Xbox360 has nothing out yet I would consider buying. PS3 is vaporware with shiny PC Dev kit demos and no great RPG lined up yet. How many old 2D games can companies rehash into 3D this generation (if there are any left)? More sequels with better graphics? How many different fucking sports can Mario (insert any videogame company mascot) play?

I know Nintendo can make some of the best games. I do not know about their ability to create completely new video game franchises. Online gaming wise they are sorely lacking also.

The improvement of graphics from Xbox to Xbox 360 is negligable. Graphics don't make the game either though.

As long as Nintendo can keep the games fun and simple and also have those few epic stories I'd be happy. PS3 is gonna cost an arm and a leg and the new Xbox isn't worth it imo. What kind of company cares about the customers but doesn't include a hard drive which is pretty much required for anything.

Yeah, I got all excited at first, but it kinda sucked. I wanted more than a remake.

I didn't like Doom 3 either, but Carmack is a genius no matter what. I've to give him some credit for Doom 3. He made one of the most powerful engine, and it's relatively easy to run. It's not an innovation the player will notice, but it's still an innovation. I didn't play or see Chronickle of Riddick, so I can't really comment.

What do you want? AI and graphics are the only thing that can be upgraded really. You can't really expect new gameplay since pratically every genre have been explored.

I think you're just growing tired of video game in general, the same way anyone grow tire of listening the same music .

How many new music style in the last 5 years? How many new sports were created? How many new book were created? There is a limit to human creativity, and once you get near the maximum, you can't expect as much novelty.
