Yeah FF8 is my favorite, and the entire story arc starting with carrying rinoa across the friggin desert, into space, and back down to rescue her from being sealed away makes me weepy. The music in the rescue scene there is bloody epic also. A few scenes in FFX (1: when you learn the fate of summoners, 2: learning wtf is up with Tidus @the top of mount gagazet, and 3: the ending) also stand out.

and yes Cecil vs Cecil in FF4 is hardcore.

Cecil vs. Cecil in FFIV is retarded.

That game tried so hard to be dramatic and full of sorrow, my cornea wanted to explode to save me from further pain.

Kain had the real story in FF4 :x
The Cecil deal was over the top, but still cool.

I don't understand how these games can bring you people to cry...I have one question for you.

If you were replaying the scene when Aeris dies and you had to fart would you hold it in because it would ruin the moment?

i forgot what crying feels like. last time i cried was when my grandfather died in 1996. wasn't it like a weak, helpless, pathetic feeling? and water seeps from your eyeballs? what a weird action. when aeris died i let a huge fart out to commemorate her. i think the fumes did bring a tear to my eye.

FFIV featured something like seven "deaths". Characters would, quite often for no logical reason at all, sacrifice themselves in some form of rehashed, canned death scene. The character would say such cliched lines as "Don't forget me!" or "You've got to go on!", Cecil would yell, "No!" and then all characters would bow their heads for six seconds and sad music played. On with adventure.

There was extremely little emotional value attached to these characters to begin with, even with the slightly improved script of the rereleased GBA version. Their deaths were cheap devices to attempt to elicit an reaction from players, and while the demise of primary, playable characters might have been novel in 1991, it's almost pathetic to watch as a modern gamer.

I just thought the Cecil vs. Cecil scene was dumb. ^^

the cecil vs cecil scene really helped to define cecil's character. when the story began, he was a guy with moderate responsibility, leading a troop of baron knights. he didn't really know the extent of the evil he was a part of, but he still wasn't exactly mister nice guy. when he finally got to experience the evil first hand, during the unexpected obliteration of a peaceful town, it kinda opened his eyes to the idea of good versus evil. but before he could transform from a dark knight into a paladin, he had to defeat his inner demons. that's what mount ordeals was about. overcoming the negative inclination that is inside us all. i dont see whats retarded about that. if i can remember that much 15 years after having played a game, i'd say it's a pretty damn good storyline. what kinda crappy storylines do we have these days? just rehashed melodrama.

I didn't give a rational break-down of why I didn't like the Cecil vs. Cecil scene. I just personally thought it sucked. ^^

There is no honor is acting like a tough bitch. There are moments in a story when you can cry and feel emotion for a character doesn't make you less manly. Imagination is the key, have to allow yourself to imagine this shit from the characters perspective, and then you can really enjoy the story. Sure some old japanese dude made the game so you would buy it, but the storyline that the other asian dude wrote for the game, is compelling and intresting and easily very good. If you just look at it as "I'm a fucking man, I'm hardcore, fuck this candy ass shit" then obviously you won't be able to find aeris dying intresting, or cecil conquering his inner demons exciting.

I just personally think not having imagination sucks. ^^

I wasn't trying to be hardcore about it...I think I lost my imagination when I was like 14. One day it just wasn't fun to play with Spawns anymore...that sucked.

It's partially the reader's responsibility to get him or herself "into" the story, but the burden falls equally onto the medium to provide a realistic and/or engaging plotline. Games do succeed in this. I argue that FFIV doesn't.

LoL sometimes you have to lower your standards in life to have a little fun. Everything doesn't have to be shakesphere.

i usually vote ff4 as the best ff (i've beaten 1-10 and tactics). best because of the dynamics of the storyline and characters. 4 and 6 were the only two ff's that really had that.

I fall asleep every time I play FF7 that is how involved I am with that game. Sephiroth is a generic ass character, very typical of crap in anime.. stuff like Alucard from Medroidvania I mean Symphony of the Night. FF8 is the worst of the modern FFs... battle system is utter shit. I don't give a fuck about the story in FF8 when the battle system is so damn crappy I don't want to play the game. Same with Xenosaga, shitty battle system but great story. Go make a fucking movie or write a book if you can't make compelling gameplay. FF9 got boring after a while, 10 was fun battle system wise but the story was so/so. I avoided X-2 like the plague. FFXI I played the most, but hard to say its my favorite due to the retarded timesink it is. FF4 was my favorite and 6 just after that. I would play FF1 some again for nostalgia value only, I realize it did not age well haha. FF1 was my third RPG behind Ultima and Dragon Warrior. I can't say I liked the JP only released FF2, 3 and 5 due to not playing them much at all.

omfg thank you. I couldn't agree more. Worst FF ever. People argue with me about that all the time. I hate the Draw system, the GF system, the fact enemies level with you, the rank thing for making gil...I just hate everything about that game. The story doesn't make up for it.

8 is the only modern FF I hate really. But I hate it a lot.

Yea the fact that monsters would lvl with you was fucking annoying as hell. But it also gave the game some difficulty. Which by far all modern games haven't been doing.

i didnt like any games where your limit break/trance/super attack/whatever the hell its called is random in when you can use it.

ff9 especially i remember many times when you are approaching a big boss fight that you'd end up spending your trance thing on a shitty random encounter mob just before the boss.

I liked ff8s battle system, draw was kinda fun imo, and it was quite fast paced, i hated how you could go afk mid battle in ff10 and not have to worry about anything. fast paced fighting doesnt make it impossible to use tactics, and Jim is right about the GF animations, I loved brothers & doomtrain especially.

9's battle system was slow as shit. You could set the ATB to active and full speed and still take forever on a regular random battle. ATB is supposed to force you to act, not wait. Characters were crap and the story was non-existant. The chocobo game and the cinemas were the only redeeming factors. Draw system blew in 8, but junctioning was nice. The thing with mobs leveling with you was cool I think but you could get around it by keeping 2 characters lower level and getting Squall to 100 with well planned deaths and AP gain on certain GFs lol. I liked 10's battle system since it could potentially be faster than any of the others, and I really liked the sphere grid learning system, and if you spent 400 or so hours on it you could make everyone a god, which is nice. I think the one thing that sucks most about 7/8 is that all the characters are basically the same in battle.

FFX's battle system ruled. The thing that jumps to mind is the fight with that elemental wheel Seymour. You had to plan ahead and think tactically.
