I blame stupid americans (canadian numbers arnt on the NDP) for buying it so much. Up here in Canada the NHL series is much more populare, its also a lot more fun to play!

Madden sells that much because it releases on so many damn consoles lol. That and the NFL is the most popular sport in the US. The NHL games used to be more fun than they are now imo. Just like Madden the EA sports NHL games are more of the same. I liked Sega's 2k line of games better for NHL, NFL, and NBA. The only thing EA does better is college football, as they have a robust dynasty mode (well last time I played one they did). People hate on Madden because its popular...and its cool to hate on stuff just because it is popular... its not THAT horrible of a game. Madden for Wii is supposedly really interesting in how they did the controls.

What interesting about these numbers is that it mocks sony's PR. They went and said at CES 2007 that they had shipped over 1 million PS3 units to the USA. However they forgot to mention that the 1 million hadnt sold out. Looks like the PS3 has about 300k units sitting on store shelves around the usa.

This is also a good read.

Along with stunning success for The Legend of Zelda®: Twilight Princess and historic sales of accessories, including more than 1.5 million extra controllers for Wii alone, Nintendo recorded the most successful across-the-board holiday performance in U.S. video game history.

Among key results:

* Consumers purchased every Wii console available at retail—more than a million in just the 44 days between U.S. launch and year end.
* With sales of another 1.6 million systems in December alone, Nintendo DS achieved full year sell-through of 5.3 million.
* The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess was purchased by an extraordinary 86 percent of Wii buyers, or more than 900,000 games for that system alone. Coupled with the companion version released in December for Nintendo GameCube™, the two versions of the newest Zelda title totaled approximately 1.5 million unit sales in less than seven weeks, which would represent one of the five best-selling games for the entire year.
* Wii owners also purchased an average of three additional games from a wide library of choices, in addition to the Wii Sports title packed in with every hardware system.
* Two Nintendo DS titles, New Super Mario Bros.® and Brain Age™: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day, also were top-10 sellers for the year.
* Throughout the November/December holiday shopping period, Nintendo accounted for more than half of all video game hardware systems sold in America.

For its part, Microsoft claimed outright victory over the holidays. "The Xbox 360 garnered a 51 percent market share in the United States for December 2006...outselling the PlayStation 3 and Wii combined in December and outselling all next-generation consoles in November and December," the company said in a statement.

Analysts were also skeptical, with some believing that the Wii sold more than NPD reported. "I don't understand how US Wii sell-through could be 1.1 million cumulatively, with Nintendo saying that they shipped half of their 4 million here and zero inventory on retail shelves at year end," said Wedbush Morgan Securities' Michael Pachter. "Where are the other 900,000 units? I assume 200,000 are in transit, but this number makes no sense to me at all."

Actually if you call NASCAR a sport then it's the most popular "sport" in America. Yeah. Seriously. =/

edit: actually it's not technically 1st in terms of ratings I guess
Quote:
With roots as regional entertainment in the Southeastern U.S., NASCAR has grown to become the second most popular professional sport in terms of television ratings inside the U.S., ranking behind only the National Football League. Internationally, NASCAR races are broadcast in over 150 countries. It holds 17 of the top 20 attended sporting events in the U.S.1, and has 75 million fans who purchase over $2 billion in annual licensed product sales. These fans are considered the most brand-loyal in all of sports, and as a result, Fortune 500 companies sponsor NASCAR more than any other sport.

nahh yarr if you really pay attention to the speech sony made at the ces show recently. They don't mention that they've sold 1 mil units. They say it more like this way, ( we've sold 1 mil units to retail channels) thats completely different from 1 million units sold to consumers. They based their numbers to units sold to retailers rather than how many people actually bought, similiar to what Microsoft did with its semi inflated 10 mil units sold. Basically they aren't telling the whole story lol. This holiday sony really appeared weak.

To be fair its not 300 k units sold to the consumers, In north america at least 700k unit are in consumer hands, the rest is still flowing within retail units. When ms had the 360, you couldn't find a 360 anywhere. It took 4 months for people to finally see them readily available.

Why are there so many still flowing within retail ?
I'm betting its
1. Price. 600 dollars is alot to ask for. And if you don't offer something incredible with the package your gonna have a tough time selling your product. Lower the price damnit.
2. The Its a cheap blue ray player excuse isn't cutting it. ( considering you continuly see hd dvd player prices going down so fast and microsofts hd dvd player accesory)
3. No good games. The suck. Literally 75 % of the games that were released were completely embaressing.
4. The price again lol. Sorry but again 600 $ is alot of money to ask for, especially because unlike an HDTV ( a one time investment) a console has to be continuely invested on. So in reality the real price of a ps3 in 5 years is freaken insane, its like 5000 + or even more. Keep the first investment ( the console) as low as possible and watch consumers buy more of your product.

LG had a Blue-Ray + HD-DVD combo drive at CES this year. It pretty much was everyone's product of the show, since it allows people to use both formats. It cost $1,200.00, which is the cost of 2 60 gig PS3s. Really Sony failed since their backwards compatibility is even screwed up on PS3.

MS sold that many 360s because there is no shortage whatsoever of the product. I would like to know where those extra 200k Wiii are... I know me and 4 other people who are looking for a Wiii lol. Not going to buy that bundle bullshit though. They can suck a dick if they think I am buying a bundle.

the numbers arent completely accurate. As badly as sony over inflates its numbers, ms is doing very much the same. Nintendo in general outsold ms , how'd they manufactor and sell 4 million wii's and ms sold 1.8 mil 360's and ms is calling themselves the winner baffles me lol.

While a HD-DVD/Blu-ray player seems like a good idea, ultimately I think it's going to just impede the market from running its course. One of the products will likely be discontinued when it loses. Besides, it's pointless to have both, even right now.

I swear I am the only person I know that dislikes football. Most of the people I know are obsessed with it. I never liked footbal video games. Hell I never liked any sports video games (besides racing or fighting). I'll play Wii Sports when people come over, but never by myself.

I heard about that. I think it's an awesome idea. It would be nice if the price wasn't so high...but in comparison with other stand alone HD DVD and Blu Ray players that's a great deal for both. I think it's supposed to run very quiet also which is nice.

That price could also get you a 360 20GB console, HD DVD add on, and a PS3 60GB. I don't know much about PS3 Blu Ray playback but I have planned on buying one just for that (for now). I need the damn HD DVD drive for my 360 first. I wish I had more $$$ to spend right now lol.

The only reason I would want both, is some movies are made exclusively for one or the other. I wish they would make everything for both...from what I read it sounds like HD DVD is our future. It's the popular choice.

You can just look at the names of each format and tell which one is going to be successful in the long run. "HD" is such a buzzword right now in the electronics market, and the average consumer sees a choice between HD DVD and Blu-ray, and they think to themselves, "I know what HD mean and I know what DVD means, but what the hell is Blu-ray?" Isn't that what killed the Crocodile Hunter? I don't really understand Sony's marketing strategy.

I like the 2k Series of sports games, and have liked hockey games better. I don't hate on madden 'cause its popular, I hate on it because I don't like football so much to begin with, and its basically the same game every year.

Other than that:

Yay nintendo! Glad I got a snes instead of a psx.

haha I don't like Madden not because of menus, but because it tries to be a simulation and fails. The way the physics are portrayed especially in making cuts and the way it responds to jukes has changed very little over the years. You basically round out cuts that are done manually and are forced to use the juke, spin, etc to make drastic cutbacks. I also favor the way the 2k series handled run blocking and leading your blockers into the defenders. With Madden sometimes you just have to rely on the AI to do the job for you entirely and that depends on how crappy or good your OLine is. The game just tries to be a simulation and be fun at the same time, it fails at both.

I am not going to get into the sport debate again as this is the gaming forum. I would rather play Baseball Simulator 3000 and Tecmo Super Bowl all day, than most of the sports games made today. Hell the original NHL by EA on Genesis was the best hockey game ever lol.. I would knock people out of games all the damn time. Too bad it had that glitch where you could get the goalie stuck behind the net, thats how you could score 20-30 goals a game on the computer. I wonder if Madden still has a limit of 254 points lol.

I was looking at the nielson polls at work and football had like every other slot almost. I don't like football tho.

Why does a sports announcer have his own game anyway? And when is Jimmy Kimmel football coming out?!

People who like the Madden series are just dumb. Its the same bull shit every year. I wont buy another Madden till they give you the option to mute him out... NHL 02 = my best sports game hands down
