The article is mostly about Starcraft 2, but it mentions the Diablo franchise.

Quote:
One of Blizzard's gold-encrusted execs has said that he "hopes" there will be another StarCraft game in the near future.

"As a Starcraft player I can tell you that I hope it wouldn't go a decade - we launched Starcraft in '98 - I hope it wouldn't go a decade before we stand here and celebrate the next Starcraft together," Itzik Ben Bassat told crowds gathered at World of Warcraft expansion The Burning Crusade's official launch event in London last night.

"Don't forget that we have two more franchises that we love - Diablo and Starcraft," Bassat had declared.

"We haven't forgotten that we have these two franchises, and what I can tell you is that I look forward to stand here in a few years, or whenever it's going to be, and celebrate with you the launch of the next Starcraft or the next Diablo."

According to our people on the ground, the Blizzard PRs "looked a bit uncomfortable" around this point. So that's welcome to the Internet the hard way, really.

Whether all that means Bassat knows something that we don't though, or whether he's just teasing or speculating, is impossible to say - but Blizzard is notoriously secret and perfectionist about its work, and it wouldn't be a massive surprise to discover a sequel lurking in development somewhere.

I doubt a high level blizzard executive would leak info like this without something to back it up.

Yeah he clearly knows whats going on. Looks like Diablo and Starcraft titles are in the works.

Id love to see Blizzard make a kick ass Diablo III. It would be nice to see them do the free multi player action they did before. Something like Guild Wars, but with much better finacial backing.

Actually over two years ago a Czech composer leaked that he was working on the soundtrack to Diablo III.

I actually feel like Blizzard owes us a Starcraft 2 RTS.. well with the crap that happened with Ghost and all. I have had enough with the half-ass RPGs like Diablo.

Have you guys played any Neverwinter Nights 2?

I think Ghost is in the works as a next-gen game. I don't blame them for holding off releasing a game that would have coincided with next-gen technology.

Eh it would have been on PS2 and Xbox before... now its next gen because it took them fucking forever to make it. They have been spending all their time on WoW and it shows.

Actually they outsourced Ghost to another company and eventually just incorporated it into Blizzard. It was an entirely separate team.

edit: Swingin' Ape Studios

Seriously, haha I've been keeping my ear out for any news of a new Starcraft RTS or MMO or whatever for a long time, but I've nearly stopped caring. I think a Starcraft MMO would be the only one I could imagine myself playing in the near future.

Starcraft MMO would be interesting. The only problem is that the game would just canibolize WoW sales. So it would be like "Hurray we now have 2 million StarCraft MMO players online only 3 days after the launch!" followed by the line "and 2 million less people playing WoW"

I don't think guns have ever translated into an MMO very well.

Fallout would be a great MMO and it has guns haha. Guns work fine in other games as well... well FFXI has RNG and WoW has Hunters. WTF are you talking about lol. A Starcraft MMO would be perfectly fine, just I want a damn RTS first.

I'm talking about futuristic, automatic weapons. Those "bursts" of automatic fire that happen on a timer just don't seem to work very well.

Its not that it doesnt work, but I think it just doesnt feel real. Guns in MMO's just never feel like real guns.

They would work just as well as Arcane Missles by a Mage in WoW or Barrage from a RNG in FFXI. Of course it doesn't feel real, its a fucking RPG. It sure as hell doesn't feel real when your toon auto attacks in every MMO made ever lmao. Just auto attack with bursts of fire, well since its not turn based like Fallout. You can't auto-attack with ranged attacks in FFXI though. Bleh the auto-attack thing in MMOs is lame anyways.

my friend said that Blizzard made an announcement on "Attack of the Show" (on the G4 channel, which I don't get) that Diablo 3 was under development. I coudn't find anything to verify that online though.

It was yesterday. It probably wasn't anything official.

It was probably "Rumors are that Diablo III is in the works. Now, back to our continued "Jamie Kennedy Experiment" 24 hour marathon!" -_- I fucking hate G4 now.

on the gun comment, its hard to make them balanced in RPGs unless its turn based or they single-shot bolt-actionish. having an auto fire gun would have to have some sort of limitation. i don't remember much from my WoW hunter experience, but i think they could make rifles sorta work, and maybe flamethrowers. the only problem i see is it'd prolly just be wow reskinned or something like that

but diablo MMO would work, but i like the 8 player thing. maybe make it 16 or something and make it harder/longer than 1 and 2

If anyone can make a compelling online action RPG, Blizzard can and will.

I love starcraft. By far, it's been my most enjoyable RTS. Warcraft III was okay, but I didn't like the move to smaller armies. I think the fun of RTS is forming huge armies and stuff. I didn't like the focus around a hero class with a posse of like 10 guys.

I don't know where I stand on the whole multiple MMO thing. On one hand, it'd subtract from the population of WoW. On the other hand, alot of people would be paying for both accounts. Either way, it's money in Blizzard's pocket. The main question is if the money generated by those purchasing dual accounts is enough to support the idea of having a complete second set of staff members to support a 2nd MMO. Development, testing, support, GMs, Forum, moderators, etc...

Blizzard gets a lot of flak from people, but I'd be excited to play a next generation version of Diablo or Starcraft, MMO, or not.

Ghost never interested me, though, and I do think they canned the idea, yah.
