Just finished the main game, moving onto Dragon's Den. Stole a Ragnarok and Ultima Weapon (a second one) from Kefka's final battle, and you get to save and keep them this time, which means you can go back and get even more of them.
Lightbringers (Illumina) for everybody!
The translation is much better done, and all the abilities and spell names were updated to match their modern counterparts (FF10/11/12) and they also got rid of the stupid CAPS FOR NAMES crap, lol. At the same time they kept a lot of nostalgia things such as names that were actually translation errors.
IE: Ultros != Orthros, Terra != Tina, Kefka != Cefka, etc.
The opera scene lyrics were changed so they actuaklly fit the damn music. That annoyed me on the SNES way more than any of the other stupid translation errors (I mean seriously, Fenix Down? Merton?)

On to characters preferences...
Sadly not everyone in FF6 is given the credit they are due. Everyone loves Terra, Sabin, Edgar, Locke, etc, because not only do they have powerful attacks and stuff, but they're pretty well integrated into the story and you get attached to them easily.
I mean, really, Locke is actually not that great in battle, but everyone loves him as a character so he always ends up in everyone's party dual weilding Ultima Weapon/Valiant Knife, or Lightbringer/Excalibur, with a Master's Scroll to boot. Which to be fair would make anyone overpowered, not just Locke, lol.
Celes' Runic becomes kinda useless late-game when you start really heavily relying on Magic. Nothing is more annoying than having your Raise and Curaga spells absorbed by Celes. But again, she's popular because she's a good story character and has decent magic stats.
Mid-game, Terra's esper form is totally way overpowered lol. Being able to hit bosses with spells for 9999 damage while everyone else can barely break 2000 is just too much. Equip a Soul of Thamasa on her and you can go for the old "Ultima > Quick > Ultima > Ultima > Ultima > Ultima" routine for easy boss killing.
Gogo is way more useful than people give him credit for. Maybe not so much for your main party, but when you need to split into 2 and 3 parties, he's awesome for your backup party. Not only can he use Blitz (spamming Phantom Rush instantly makes him a decent damage dealer) but he automatically knows every spell other characters in your party know without having to teach them him.
Setzer is an awesome low/mid-game character if you equip him with
Fixed Dice (They have an attack rating of 19, so it'll never be equipped automatically, try it out), because it allows him to attack regardless of stats, and deal 9999 damage even at level 1.
Gau is a love him or hate him kinda character. Gau actually gets access to lots of spells and abilities way before you can normally get them using his Rages. He gets Firaga/Blizzaga/Thundaga in the WoB, not to mention Reraise. Gau can also get "Shock" (Yes, Leo's "Shock" attack) -- However, losing control of him is annoying, especially on bosses where timing and curing is important. And he is a really weak character storywise and not very likable outside of battle so he gets shoved aside a lot.
Strago is kinda useless sadly, his Lores are all pretty weak compared to tier 3 elemental spells, and even his best Lore "Grand Delta" is weaker than Ultima anyway.
Poor Cyan gets a lot of flak from people because his stats are not that great, and his moves can't really be spammed because of the charging time on them. Oblivion (Tech

is actually pretty damn powerful on annoying random encounters if you have the patience to charge it up; sadly you cant use it on bosses though. The trick is to either: have all your other characters attack first and then charge Bushido while they're acting, or just cast Quick.

And lets not forget Kefka. It's quite interesting when you think about how he starts off as the comic relief henchman through the whole game and then suddenly out of nowhere, BAM, he turns on his master, actually succeeds in destroying the world, and becomes a God!
All in all, yes, best game ever.
Also.
