Post subject:  resident evil 5 sparks racial controversy

here's the trailer:

here's the article:

http://www.gamespot.com/news/show_blog_ ... d=25817098

here's the quoted article for all you fags with blocked sites:

Quote:
For all their focus on gore galore, zombie movies have traditionally been rife with social commentary and allegory. George Romero's Living Dead series of films have touched on terrorism, class warfare, rampant commercialism, and in the original Night of the Living Dead, race relations.

The two subjects are intersecting again, as the recently released trailer for Resident Evil 5 has a number of commentators concerned about how the trailer portrays a white hero--the returning Chris Redfield--against hordes of black zombie foes in what could be an African village. In an editorial for The Village Voice's Runnin' Scared news blog, Bonnie Ruberg notes one forum-goer's concern that gunning down mobs of angry Africans could be "subtly racist." Ruberg herself says she finds the trailer "strangely disturbing."

"It's not just that these zombies are black, but that the uninfected black villagers are zombie-like too," Ruberg wrote. "See all those spooky shots of the villagers before they get infected? It's as if race itself were a disease. The white protagonist has to fight back or be infected."

She also notes that according to the zombie mythos, the barest contamination, a bite or a single drop of blood in an open wound, spells doom for a person. That could be a parallel to Africa's ongoing HIV and AIDS crisis, Ruberg wrote, or a reminder of the segregationists who used a "one drop rule" stating that black ancestry of any sort was justification enough to deny a person access to basic rights.

Ruberg is not the only commentator to blog on the issue. In a post titled "Blackface Goes HD?," Jason from Microscopiq takes issue not only with the race of the parties involved in the trailer, but also in the setting.

"With all the positive steps being taken of late to raise awareness of the good things happening in Africa as well as the urgent need in some parts of the continent, we really can't afford this kind of step back. We need to find ways to humanize Africans, not dehumanize them."

On Black Looks, a group blog focusing on African women and social concerns, Kym Platt briefly recaps the trailer, noting that it's apparently the white character's job to destroy the black people and save humanity.

"This is problematic on so many levels," Platt wrote, "including the depiction of Black people as inhuman savages, the killing of Black people by a white man in military clothing, and the fact that this video game is marketed to children and young adults. Start them young...fearing, hating, and destroying Black people."

Platt's blog--like the others--has spurred a number of responses, most overwhelmingly in defense of the game or against the original author. One response to the "Black Looks" post points out that the Resident Evil series has seen its share of zombies of European origin.

"According to the statistics of racial make-up in the world, I'd actually say that whites have been unfairly discriminated against in the series, if anything, since so many of them have been enemies in RE," said one commenter. "It only seems fair that Africans get treated equally, and with only one game full of primarily black enemies to six games full of primarily white, from a racial viewpoint I'd say that the Africans are getting off easy."

"There is plenty of real racism alive and well in the world today and words cannot describe how disgusting it can be," wrote another, "but it is garbage rants like this that take attention from real problems. It is absurd and insulting to everyone to suggest this game is in anyway being designed to teach anyone to hate black people."

A third poster merely commented, "That game looks so awesome."

Over on the Village Voice blog post, one commenter approached the issue from another direction, writing, "Many of these games, including [Resident Evil 5], are being made in ethnically homogenous Japan, where concepts of race are hugely different from those in America. On some level, I think Japanese developers simply don't understand how potentially flammable these kinds of scenarios could become, let alone some of the even more blatant stereotyping often found in Japanese games (think Barrett's penchant for Ebonics in [Final Fantasy 7], just for starters.)"

Thats stupid.

I think the south park episode that deals with "Hate Crimes" really sums up this article well.

The truth is. The people who see this as "Racism" are the real racists. This zombie game is no different than 1-4. This one happens to take place in Africa. So guess what? The zombies are ... get this ... African!

The only way to make this game non racial is to never mention it at all. These people are creating racism by pointing out skin colour and stuff like that. I first saw this preview and didnt think anything of it.

RE4 was entirely about killing spanish people who weren't zombies. Nobody cared.

No one complained when you were shooting white zombies, no one complained when you were shooting spanish zombies, no one should complain when your shooting black zombies.

Hyper sensitive, whining, etc.

If this game has nothing to do with Resident Evil like 4 didn't (besides the main character), I'm going to be pissed.

On topic sorta, if african-americans want to be treated equally then why do they have to make a huge deal out of not being treated equally. It happens to everyone everywhere, just the history of it was different.

omg dmitry had a valid point lol, me and my roomates are so talking about this thread now and how bullshit it is.

The other day a black woman from chicago came into my work, and wanted a pack of newports, now since i was in highschool newports have always been insanely priced compared to marlboro, probably because its the only premium cigarette made by the Lorillard company, anyway she claimed to have been in the store the day before and paid less for them and that we were being racist and should be sued. the few customers in the store at the time were thinking WTF! just like we were.

I'm not racist and i wish i could tell people who think they are being wronged due to the color of their skin that they need to stop trying to make everything seem like racism, because they are bringing it upon themselves now.

I love the Tribal parts of Africa as much as any other scared whiteguy...

but seriouslly it sickens me that people are aloud to think like this and claim to not be raciast.

How the F did she get that from the trailer!? It is possible that she has never played the other video games, but i'd say it is IMPOSSIBLE to not know of the series from either the video games commercials or even movies trailers.

Fuck you.

Anyway, I also can't stand when someone says nigger and everyone is shocked by it (even though it may not be as bad today as it used to be), but black people can shout cracker out left and right and there won't be any kind of reaction. Same thing with hispanics and gringo.

So.... is Resident Evil such a dead franchise that every game from now on is going to be behind the shoulder and more about just killing everything?

There's a difference between sticking to a new style because the franchise is dead and sticking to a new style because it's fucking awesome. RE4 did have a much more arcade shooter style feel to it than the previous games but the tension and horror elements leading to the shootout scenes remained. Compare that to the static and often remote camera angles of RE1-Veronica and you can't deny that this way of doing it is much more dynamic.

However, mikey says this is the last game in the series, so believe what you want. Keep in mind though, this series has been around since 1996 and has only ever gotten better. RE is the reason I got a playstation, RE is the reason I got a Dreamcast, RE is the reason I got a gamecube (after getting/selling one around WindWaker time lol).

Oh right it wasn't you. Meanwhile I'm sick of this shit where people say videogames are going to influence the youth. Games have ratings, if these retards who pretend to give a shit actually cared, they'd know that the control has been given to parents by the little icon in the corner of the box.

Now excuse me while I mount a videocamera on my shoulder and shoot some niggers and spics.

But they were spaniards, they don't have it as bad :P

DL, I understand the gameplay is awesome, I love it. But a lot of the time I usually play a game for the storyline, which is what my gripe is. Originally, RE4 was supposed to have Leon infiltrating an Umbrella laboratory and have been infected with some new strain of the virus, but then they rehash the whole thing seven hundred times and come up with the crap of protecting the presidents daughter. I'll admit that I've replayed it a couple times. I love mercenaries mode in this one. It's the style of the gameplay that makes it so fun to keep playing.

Shit I just screwed myself.

Anyway, I'm just bitchy about it not having anything to do with the original games. I hope RE5 has something more than just a character keeping it in the franchise.

Ok, even if someone was white, didn't know where they were, or were lost in this area of the world, I'm willing to bet that even if they weren't zombies around I'm fairly sure a similar scenario to the trailer in the game would happen as the white person would be robbed, beaten the fuck up, and/or killed.

To me the game looked as if it was situated in a barrio or shantytown like one may find in Cape Town, S. Africa. Similar places exist in Haiti, or the very non-tourist but all too real parts of Jamaica or in the drug-overlord controlled blocks of Rio De Janeiro where baile dance is like a bloodsport. Hell, even the still ravaged parts of New Orleans and Mississippi as well as many other places all around the world look like the area featured in that small trailer.

If one ever saw the movie Black Hawk Down there were no zombies, but there were definitely no fucking white people just living as a natural born resident in that particular part of the world either!!! If this individual making these retarded claims saw that film would the same retarded fuss be made? I mean even in GTA games the stereotypes were so absurd (accept mission - kill 20 Cubans) but no one said shit about race as much as they bitched about violence. So what's the difference?

The developers of this game probably intended to capitalize on the original zombie anyway which is more attributed to Afro-Carribean heritage and voodoo than it ever was to Night of the Living Dead. This change was a tribute to that. Face it, zombies were black to begin with, its as much a fact as saying a white Canadian man invented basketball. I could care less what color/sexual preference/gender/nationality you are, if you're cool then you're cool but if you're a dick then you're a dick. People figure out real quick not to play unwarranted race cards on me. Racism, get over it, I'm a white kid in Atlanta, GA doing hip-hop/rap music. Preach to me about racism please, I'm all ears.

uh-uh you can't tell me NOTHING!

Devil May Cry was orginally RE4! True story.

Also, nobody complained when GTAIV came out and had Cj shooting white people.

Actually the first spark of inspiration for Devil May Cry came from a glitch in Onimusha where Samanosuke could juggle foes with his sword.
