Has anybody played it? It's the most fun RPG I've played in a while. The graphics, gameplay, and sound are all 10/10 IMO. The battle system is my favorite out of any turn based RPG I've played. The characters are all very likeable...just don't use English voices haha. Japanese with subtitles ftw.

The story is nothing spectacular. I'm only 7 hours into the game, so I don't know everything yet. Also it's pretty linear (like damn near all new RPGs) and you can't change the camera angle...but otherwise it's an amazing game.

All fellow RPG fanboys should pick it up! Atleast rent it. I hear it's only 30 hours long.

I played the demo and was skeptical because of all the gooey dreampop kiddie funland shit going on, but then, I felt the same way about the blue dragon demo, and i've been playing that like it's a second job (just got to 3rd disc last night, put in 45 hours so far (half of which were prolly me lolafking) so in your opion Klu, is eternal sonata better than blue dragon? Can it hold the interest of a 28 year old beer swilling drug addicted maniac? or will I want to claw out my eyeballs out because the game seriously looks like some nightmare combination of the wiggles, strawberry shortcaked, and final fantasy IX

If you don't find Blue Dragon painfully childish and don't claw your eyeballs out when Marumaru constantly spazzes out, or Kluke and Jiro constantly treat Shu like he's a 5 year old...you will be fine with Eternal Sonata. I wanted to kill every character in Blue Dragon lol. Blue Dragon's main flaw is it's too fucking easy! I seriously never died (wiped) once on that game, even to the super hard optional bosses (Gold Mecha Robo and Giant King Snake). My party whiped fighting the first boss on Eternal Sonata because I didn't fully understand the battle system haha. I haven't since then.

Don't get me wrong I still loved Blue Dragon , and I'll play it again some day. Blue Dragon is way more old school RPGish. I like how you can customize your characters abilities and it has a good job system. Also there is a world map, airship, blah blah. Eternal Sonata isn't like that.

I think it will hold your interest fine. It is very "cute" but in a less annoying way than Blue Dragon. I actually really like the cartoonish look and the character models. It looks amazing in HD. My roommate was watching me play it with his jaw dropped yesterday. It's a very bright and colorful game (like Blue Dragon). Enjoy that before the dark RPGs like Lost Oddysey come out!

good point
but i'm not sick of tarutarus. i guess it's cause they're not all bright and fancy and prissy. they're like little killing machines that deceive you with their small stature.

I kinda agree.

And you know what...It seems like the quality of RPGS has seriously deminished. With Microsoft psuing onward leading, RPGS will continue to suffer. I miss the rpgs from ps1 and before. I think i had a talk to reinheld about this a long time ago. I remember him saying ps1 and that generation was kinda of a golden age for rpgs. Overall its getting kinda scary. The gaming industry is focusing more on shooters. And it sad very very sad indeed. Thats not say they're horrible. But it goes to show you where the market is going, People want to pick up a game shoot something and then finish it. The market will eventually crash, if it continues at the pace that it does.

Or at the very least, the market need to shrink. 2 consoles if anything. 3 is kinda too much. Although alot of people agree that sony has lost a bit of reality when it comes to how to market their PS3. I will say this, Out of all the consoles. My money is on ps3 to deliver more RPGs than the others combined

Keep in mind that RPGs are becoming very tired. There's a distinct lack of innovation (in characters, settings, stories, and especially gameplay) that's should certainly not be overlooked when wondering why interests are changing.

japan still has some rpgs that don't make it over here. It seems like the more traditional rpgs are moving to portables. And big budget rpgs are losing more and more story and depth to full length cinemas and cut scenes. There are some that aren't bad and should get more attention than what they get. For example the dot hack series. THe new not the old.Its an rpg based on around an mmo thats taken over as the number one game in the world. It requires players to directly connect to their computer, and several have gone into comas. In any case that game is far from traditional and is actually fucking cool. And the battle system is fun too. You can buy the entire 3 part series now for like 70$. I think its worth it.

i have a few ideas on this:

1. microsoft and PS3 are trying to beat each other with games and are just flinging them out as fast as they can, hoping to bury the other, besides all god halo3

2. microsoft is trying to pull nintendos handheld rpg market away form them so more ppl will become xbox fans

3. some1 had a hit rpg similar to those and the publishers want more of what ever did well

I still have high hopes for FFXIII on PS3. Mostly for high resolution-squaresoft-cutscene-eyecandy-orgasms. I hope they fill that massive BD storage space with lots of them.

Eternal Sonata is overkill on cute...but I absolutely love it haha. It's like watching a cute fantasy anime movie. I'm telling you, it's fun to play also!

Of course new RPGs won't live up to the old ones (SNES and PS1 ftw), but they can still satisfy RPG gamers who were forced to start liking shooters because that's all that fucking comes out anymore. I won't become bitter and stop playing new games. I still like the old, and I give the new a chance. So far I've been happy.

i rented this.. I dunno if I'm feeling it, i got to the part in blue dragon where you get through the devour forest and it opens up to the great snowlands area and i was going to find the next town or event when a big ass scorpion and 2 genbus pulled up and smoked my ass with like 4 watera's and 2 of those insane multi-hit things that the scorp did. I guess I didn't forsee my 2 mages not being able to use magic for awhile... and not being able to stop lvling shu's generalist with all the sweetass maxed out monk, thief, and swordmaster skills available to him... so i wiped and i was like.. eff this i aint going through that forest again and i rented eternal sonata. it better get better soon is all i'm saying. and fyi guys kluya sold me his copy of viva pinata so there is something seriously weird going on.

as far as the whole rpgs sucking ass now.. yah I'm gonna have to agree that the calbur of rpgs are seriously bunk nowadays. mmorpgs are fun, but you outgrown them. The sad thing is that, while i remember loving every minute of those old final fantasy, phantasy star, dragon warrior, and zelda games, when I go to replay them now i'm like clawing my eyes out cuz of the horrible graphics or i beat them in 3 hours because they're insanely easy. I guess when you've been playing them for 20 years they lose their luster a bit, what was once the sick ass cave board is now just another shitty ass cave board. But I have faith that they will churn out some really awesome rpgs... they need to get back into content.. rpgs appeal to the losers who have 100 hours to contribute to a game doing lots of little side things to have a giant epeen about. That's what makes ffvii the greatest rpg ever made (suckmydickknightsoftheroundgoldchocoboultimaweaponswhyyyy). cuz yeh they can do better than cutscene > walk through the woods > boss > cutscene > walk through water area > cutscene > boss > cutscene > walk through ice area > boss battle > cut scene > etc.
