Sony Makes EQ Auctioning Official
If you can't beat unauthorized auctioners, join them.
by David Adams

April 20, 2005 - Using online auction sites to sell characters and items from massively-multiplayer RPGs is nothing new -- the practice has gone on, to the disdain of MMORPG publishers, for years now. Rather than simply fighting the practice, however, Sony Online Entertainment announced today it will join in, albeit in an official, controlled manner. In June, the company will open Station Exchange, an official auction site for selling EverQuest II items, characters, and currency.

Station Exchange is designed to allow players to buy and sell in-game items directly between each other. When a character or item is put up for sale, it will be effectively removed from the game world and securely stored at the Exchange, until it is bought and transferred directly to the new owner. Sony hopes to attract players with the service's security and reduction of fraud.

Sony, of course, will collect a percentage of each transaction.

"The unsanctioned secondary market for online games is rapidly growing and more and more of our players are taking part in it," said John Smedley at SOE. "Not only are we answering the demands of a sizable portion of our subscriber base, but we are also set on establishing the standard for online game sales. SOE is in a unique position to help guide the industry, just as we have since we first opened the world of EverQuest to the public six years ago."

For more information, visit the official Station Exchange site.

I am hoping this doesn't roll over into FFXI in the future. I believe if it does, A LOT of people will call it quits.

I wouldn't be surprised if they were already taking a kickback from the third party auction companies.

I think they're just making an official statement now to cover their asses.

really gay but whatever. It was bound to happen, I guess.

I don't see a difference honestly.
If people want to buy gil nowadays, they can.
If people want to buy items (or sell items) or gil for RL money, they already can.
..This will just be another means of doing it.

Those who oppose gil buying and selling still will.
Those who bitch about the economy being insane still will.
Those who buy and sell gil.. still will.

SoE is concerned with one thing: Money. Even if that means trashing up gameplay for it. If they sell their own platinum, that's still COMPLETELY different than IGE. They can MAKE IT, so if it sells and they get MONEY, they'll MAKE MORE and inflate the economy.

It's their game, let them fuck it over I guess. I just feel bad for Vurin and Computer

For those who can't read. Bear in mind this "service" will only be for two ( or more) completely new and seperate servers. So thinking positively this will effect as few folks as possible. And hopefully won't affect anyone who doesn't conciously make the deciision to play on these servers.

I've made numerous post that i will quit the game if this ever goes live on my server.

Farming is alot different in eq2. There are no special items that each must have. For example, sniper rings were being farmed 24/7 every day when i played ffxi. It was just assumed that you would wear 2 of these starting around the lvl 50 range. In eq2 most equipment is heritage stuff (stuff that was in eq1). The main problem is that everyone has the same stuff, we all look alike. Its a game built around quests and rare items really cant be "farmed". As of now the farmers on my server, who we all know, just farm regular mobs for rare quest starter items. There are maybe a handfull of mobs being camped but in all its no too bad. +1 agi in ffxi might cost me 300k where stats for the most part in eq2 dont really matter.

Kinda like ffxi all good armor is droped on raids which you need at least 18 decent people to go.

The reason why i would quit is just for the fact i dont agree with living peacefully with the farmers. They already made mobs no agro when u break an encounter so its almost impossible to train them.

WoW is the same way...

There really aren't set items you NEED to have like in FFXI. The endgame loots are common (valor, lightforge set ect) but alot of it is random generated

Station Exchange - Update and Poll Results
Over the past week, we've had an in-game poll up on the US and EU-English servers aimed at gathering an updated view of what everyone thinks of the idea of Station Exchange and whether they'd be interested in participating in it.

For anyone needing to get caught up, background on this topic is available at: http://www.stationexchange.com

Here are the results of the polls:

What do you think of Station Exchange?

For It: 33.71%
Neutral: 32.61%
Against It: 33.68%

Do you want to participate in Station Exchange?

Yes: 24.76%
Don't Care: 29.90%
No: 45.34%

While opinions have been strong on this subject (in all directions), we'd like to thank you all for continuing to express yourselves in a way that has remained largely civil. :) We want to make sure that what we do with this service takes everyone's opinions into account, and that what we do is as tasteful as possible from everyone's point of view.

Here's what you can expect to happen from here:

14 days before the service launches, we'll be letting people from all US and EU-English servers register for a move to a new Exchange-enabled server. These moves will be free, and characters will move with everything they own, except shared bank items, just like a normal /movelog does today.

Once we've registered enough people to fill one server, we'll shut down movelog registrations and let you know that the registration period has ended.

The service will initially launch on one new server, which will be populated by those who registered.

Once that server is filled, we will repeat the above steps to fill a second server.

In the future, people will be able to use the Character Transfer Service to move characters to Exchange-enabled servers, with one important limitation:
Characters that move from a non-Exchange server to an Exchange-enabled server will do so only with their NOTRADE or ATTUNED equipment and house items, and without coin. This is aimed at preventing the non-Exchange servers from being fertile farmland for those who might seek to farm on one server, then move and sell on the other.

While nearly one out of four people indicate they would actively like to play on an Exchange-enabled server, we don't plan on drastically altering the landscape of EQ2 from the outset by opening many servers on the same day. We'll continue to open new servers as demand for the service requires.
If these plans change, expect further postings describing the changes.

Thanks very much for logging in and answering the poll, and for your continued feedback here on the boards.

Good hunting.

- Scott

lol i think its a smart move by sony from a business stand point. no matter how hard you try they wont be able to completely stop selling chars item etc. so you might as well make some money for yourself out of it
