I thought this game was supposed to be on par with HL2 =\ Even Prince of Persia: Sands of Time looks better than Doom 3, and that was made like 2 or 3 years before it.

Doom 3 was scary for me. Why? Because I'm a pussy.


Sadly I haven't played much of HL2: Only throwing chinese food boxes at guards at Hale's house. And Prince of Persia: SoT was seriously on par with Zelda at some points

Doom III has never gotten good reviews and doesn't deserve them either, the game just sucks. It's a piece of shit that shouldn't even be compared to the orgasm named HL2.

Go play Vampires The Masquerade:Bloodlines and get up to the hotel mission.... you will know a new meaning of being scarred.... I played it at 12noon EST and I couldnt do it straight through. It was best part of the game so far @_@; Im getting goosebumps just thinking of it......... be careful....he's in here....

bloodlines is bad!!!!! Well, after you have been up for 2 days it is....
I remember that mission.... I have a window behind me... each time the tree smacked against it I jumped.... when you don't sleep your mind goes places... bad places... I cleared the computer desk on one jump... I used to be in track... doom III wasn't made... some retarded game that was made to have a name like doom was made... we just didn't see that the "O" was really a cheap knock off zero downsized.. atleast that is what I tell myself... and the 80s also never existed to me...

If you want to relive the old doom style with legions of hundreds of brainless monsters storming at you, play Serious Sam. Still one of the most fun shooters out there imo.

k I'm just glad I'm not the only one that thought Doom 3 was bleh :P Seriously all the graphics had a fake plastic look to them and the game is way too damn dark even with the gamma cranked up. Couldn't even see what was shooting at me most of the time.

Yea, the "darkness" was marketed as "a scary constant". I read that as "We were just too fucking lazy to actually make decent graphics, now give us your money" which I was right about.

Yeah, I agree about the darkness thing... I'm convinced they did that just to show what bad graphics they had....

But concerning HL2... I really wasn't impressed by their graphics cuz their map sizes felt like just a bathroom.... I mean the loading every 2 minutes got so frigging annoying.

I'd rather they made the game less "eye candy' and more "funcitonal" with a way to make maps that didn't zone every 2 min.

I dunno I thought PoP looked pretty good even though AA didn't work in it. Of course I had 16x Anisotropic filtering forced through the control panel so that helped the graphics too :P Doom 3's level of aniso is linked with the quality option of the textures you choose, which could make it look better in comparsion if you didn't force aniso on in other games :P

I disagree that the "darkness is a constant" is just a lazy way out. It's scary. The jumpers jump out of the darkness and you have like no time to react. I think it's a scary game.

This can be done without the over abundance of darkness in the game. They would have just needed more time and effort into the coding. Then again, why do that when you already have fan boys lined up around the nearest game store three months before it comes out? It's hard to scare me when something with the graphic quality of my old action figures from when I was 10 jumps out at me. Scary is Al Gore in a swim suit, a decent story line that makes me pay attention, or atleast something that doesn't look like a third year graphic arts student threw together the day before his rendering project was due. Then again I am also from the school of thinking where if you hype a game for over a year you had better damn well show me something worth it being hyped over. "OMGZ TEH JUMPS FROM TEH SHADOHS!!!112" does not get me in the slightest. I want a game, not some cheesey horror movie to mars rip off.

Please explain how it can be done with "better coding".

I'm not someone who cares too much about graphics, hehe. I like a certain style sometimes, but I will play a game first for its content. I keep the graphics settings low on WoW even though I could easily play just fine on max. I just do it because I hate when something doesn't run smoothly :P

You can give the game a more lit enviroment, and still code the shadows as dark, and have the mobs jump from there. You don't have to keep it dark to the point you have trouble navigating around. You would take the extra time to place the shadowing in a more user friendly way that also helped you get around. This is prefered for 90% of people who play games. It just takes more time, and effort than shading a whole area.

i refused to play this game.. my friend has it for teh xbox. he sits tehre and plays it and gets all into it while im sitting tehre playing harvest moon. for some reason im not into blood and gore. even halo was to extreme for me. not the gore part but the way its played.. i suck.. i jes it there throwing gernades inthe air trying to see if i can get then stuck on me.

Doom 3 reminded me alot of a game design class I went to years ago. We were handed a peice of paper on our way in that I believe still holds true.
1) making a game dark doesn't make it scary, it makes it dark.
2) giving it a large breasted woman doesn't cover plot holes, it just makes 13 year olds have to buy new controllers.
3) Adding over done "spooky music" doesn't make it scarey. (see 1)
4) Things can only jump out so many times before people start to consider it like a 5 year old. The first time it startles you, then it's just annoying.
5) GOOD GRAPHICS ARE NO EXCUSE FOR BAD GAME PLAY!
6) GOOD GAME PLAY IS NO EXCUSE FOR BAD GRAPHICS!
7) There is no excuse for bad story lines. If you aren't going to make it a good one don't make it at all.
8) Shoot anyone that refers to a shooting game as an RPG.
9) Players will ruin every large player based game. If you make one, accept this.
10) Unless you know the damage role for magic missle with 30 charisma, at level 25 you are a noob. Don't call others noobs. If you do know this you can call others noobs, but keep it down because you still live at home.
11) Your games will be out dated before you come out with a new one.
12) If you want to scare people give them a story line good enough they start forgetting they aren't in the game. Good graphics with proper sounds can do this.
13) You are a geek, get used to it.

on another note yes there is a program to turn the lights on. It's sort of like having sex with a fat person. You turn them on, and as soon as you can you turn it back off. it only gets worse the more you see. With the "lights on" you do see they really didn't give a crap about graphics when you compare them to other games. They took the cheap way out, and charged people alot of money for a sub-par game. If you want blood and guts go watch some FWA matches.
