I think FF7 is the most overrated thing ever made, even if it's still a pretty good game.

Any sports vedio game is way over-rated.

Sports games aren't all that bad. What's bad is that they can get away with rereleasing an exact copy of every single sports game, every single year, with the only improvement being an incremental digit on the game's title.

Halo 2 didn't get the overrated treatment as bad as Halo 1 did. Halo 1 was regarded as the greatest game of all time by like everyone who owned an XBox. The only reason for it really is that Halo just happened to be the first FPS on a console that had proper Online multiplayer support.

Personally I think WoW gets a lot more media attention than it really needs. Even sites like Gamespy run their own WoW comics now and all sorts of crap. It's probably the first real "Mainstream" MMO so it gets a lot of attention for it. Yeah there have been hundreds of MMOs before it, but it's all Dungeons & Dragons type stuff played by Basement dwellers, etc. Not to mention, it's not really been until recently when having internet access is a common household thing, the majority of past MMO were all released before your "average" kid had internet access at home.

I personally think that all of the "firsts" get way too much rep. In a lot of cases they deserve the extra attention for being first, but even though they deserve to get the "most" attention, they just seem to keep on going until they have too much. A good example is FF7 being the first mainstream Console RPG. FF7 is a damn good game, but it gets too much attention for being so.

I think alot of that has to do with the fact that the games that are "first" tend to be extremely successful (financially).

And companies (and media) look for another game that will be such an incredible financial success. (money makes the world go round~)

And to stay on topic....

Team fortress 2!!!

Super hype from a game company that hit it big (financially)... valve.... and complete vapor ware as a result.

i'll have to agree with FF7, overhyped, overrated, wtf is the big deal? halo 2, big hype, subpar outcome. was much more impressed with halo 1

I think all of the Street Fighters were way over rated, I mean they were ok but they could only hold my attention for about 30 mins before i got bored with them.

WoW. It gets way too much hype and media attention compaired to other online games for what its worth. (FFXI gets almost nothing). Its an ok game but not the mmo to end all mmo's and really in a lot of retrospects its heavily lacking in quality. I don't feel its quite earned all its blind hype.

FF7 really doesn't bother me much, but SE suddenly just now realizing they had something good on their hands they never quite used to its full potential does. 'Cause now there's like 5 billion spin offs in the make.

OK so I agree that Halo 2 is atleast not over hyped any more. Still, Halo and Halo 2 in my eyes are the same game and get far more praise than they diserve.

FFVII, it was only so popular because of the crazy marketing campaign that Square launched. I guess it was somewhat groundbreaking in that it was the first big 3-D rpg, but there are alot of better rpgs out there imo.

btw I'm counting the seconds until someone makes a "most underrated game of all time" thread.

Any video game, that had corperate sponsers, that ended up sucking. (ie: the game that have the noid and the mascot from dominos pizza, or the 7-up game).

Halo 1 was Lan only, no Online stuff. There was online for PC version, but it wasnt really popular.

Personally, I don't think it was overrated . It's still one of my favorite fps, for both story/single and multiplayer. I tend to think it's the X-box that is overrated, not the only good game on that system :P

I don't think those are overrated, cause seriously anything to do with a franchise outside of the video game community, being translated to a game usually is a nice idea on pen and paper, but in practice has been proven time and time again to suck. Pretty much, I believe they're overpublicized, and thrown out into the market for the people to go "omgwtflandfill" with like crappy games like that ET one.

Then again you could watch X-Play on G4 and listen to them whine about these same exact types of games.
