This is a serious thread, as the title implies. It's a rationalizing thread, or a thread to calmly post your thoughts about DMC4 here. What I DO NOT want here are fanboy bickerings about DMC4 not meeting some of your supposed expectations or your character is not done justice... blah blah blah.
I think it's pretty obvious that there are many ambiguities in the current DMC4 news. While the news about the technology, game play design and standard DMC stuff is great, it's the characters/story that has me perplexed.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Let's start this thread by asking some simple questions:
Who is Nero?
When the scans first came out, the fans quickly jumped the gun that Nero is a Japanese mistranslation of "Nelo" which then was correlated to Nelo Angelo and then straight to Vergil. Of course many thought this would happen in DMC4 PRIOR to the new information and with Vergil's popularity, who could've thought any less. The twin appearance to Dante was another dead give away.
In light of new information, it seems to be apparent that Nero is not Vergil but in fact a brand new character to the DMC series. Not only is he a main character in the series but he is also very much playable. He has his own story and I will copy/paste the new stuff here:
Duckroll at GAF gets credited for translating and providing us information on the text in the scans.
- Nero is a knight within the Order of the Demon Blade, a religious order which protects the secrets and powers of demons from the world.
- There's no indication that he is the Vergil that we know from DMC3 and DMC1.
- The game is set in a huge city known as Fortuna.
- The people here believe that Sparda is a god, and the Order that Nero works for wants to undo Sparda's seal.
- It is for this purpose that Nero ends up in this city, but here his entire unit is slaughtered by the demon hunter Dante.
The more I read into it, the more I am convinced that this Nero character is indeed a brand new character. Why does he look SO MUCH like Dante? I have no ****ing idea to be honest, and I can't explain the silver hair either. All I know is that Capcom is not trying to make this character out to be Vergil at all and since he's playable they only thought it was wise to go with the red get up + silver hair.
So where does Dante come into play? My guess is that the game will play out in dual format, you play as both character eventually. The scans made this fairly clear... Another question is that if Nero is not Vergil, then what happens of him? I think Vergil is being kept in the dark for his more "epic" debut (at least that's what I think).
Some things to note:
- New character is significantly younger than Dante.
- A new character was heavily implied by Capcom in their early interviews.
- The Nelo/Nero "typo" was never fixed by Capcom, and even in Japan for DMC3SE Nelo Angelo was advertised with an "L". This is not a recurrence here, but I am guessing it's part of some demonic theme in DMC that DMC4 will get more into.
Other relevant information for DMC4 (copy/pasted) + My Opinions:
Time and Setting
- Devil May Cry 4 *officially* takes place AFTER Devil May Cry (original) and BEFORE Devil May Cry 2. The "canoness" of DMC2 is still unconfirmed but Dahbomb says its not canon...
- The story seems to indicate that Nero (more on his later) will be the main plot device of DMC4. It's unconfirmed as to what Dante's status is in DMC4 but at this point it's pretty obvious that he will not be more than 60% of a factor in the game. The game will most likely be equally shared between the 2 characters.
Characters Information
- BOTH Dante and Nero are PLAYABLE in DMC3 but most likely you will only play as Nero at TGS since he is more "fresh" than Dante. Nero has an eerie resemblance to Dante, he has a red vest, a broad sword that has a big resemblance to the broard sword used by Nelo Angelo (it's called the Red Queen). Nero might even use a Revolver! Nero does not seem to have aged much but Dante on the other hand seems a bit older than his DMC1 counterpart. Dante now wields Rebellion ala DMC2/DMC3, and retains his Ebony and Ivory.
- Nero's looks, as previously stated, are A LOT like Dante, in fact when the scans came out he could not be differentiated from Dante. He has showered down hair and a red vest, and even has a pose of him with a Revolver. His two differences from Dante are his sword (the Red Queen) and his right arm which is possessed as hinted by the teaser trailer. Nero is a knight within the Order of the Demon Blade, a religious order which protects the secrets and powers of demons from the world.
- The game is set in a huge city known as Fortuna. The people here believe that Sparda is a god, and the Order that Nero works for wants to undo Sparda's seal. It is for this purpose that Nero ends up in this city, but here his entire unit is slaughtered by the demon hunter Dante.
Next-Gen Stuff
- Devil May Cry 4 is CONFIRMED to run at 60 Frames Per Second. It's probably one of the 3 next-gen games to have accomplish this feat. Not an easy task on next-gen hardware, as I am told. No confirmation yet on 1080P resolution, I personally doubt it going higher than 720P to sustain that level of FPS.
- Yuji Shimomura is CONFIRMED to come back and do the cutscenes for DMC4 ala DMC3. Expect intense, over the top action scenes that made DMC3 the king of action.
DMC4 Combat Engine
- The combat system in DMC4 will be closest to DMC3 with some tweaks and fixes. Fan comments and suggestions are taken into consideration for the formation of the DMC4 combat engine.
- There are posts floating around about a new "Defiance" style for Nero. I cannot deny nor can I confirm this information.
- Another new game play addition is the addition of "Acceleration" on the sword, most importantly on the "Red Queen" sword of Nero's. In addition, along with the staple Devil Trigger of the series DMC4 will bring in a feature called "Devil Bringer". More news on both of these will be revealed at TGS.
- The right arm of Nero actually has game play significance and is able to move around enemies through its telepathic abilities. The director stated that this new ability will almost negate "combo breaks" and will open up a whole new wave of combos in DMC4. The physics required to use this new ability in DMC4 was NOT possible on the PS2, as stated by the director.
Edit by Reinheld: Took out the giant scans. Sorry. Hah.
