so like.. was there some course in college you all took to become super computer savvy/nerdy or does this all come from ripping apart your own rig and researching shit on messageboards, anytime people start talking about computer hardware it's like they may as well be speaking in swahili, but I want to learn. i feel so inept.

I learnt everything because I worked at a computer store. So I was constantly bombarded with questions about anything and everything. I was also requried to read about new products, new features and future stuff also. I was required to do it, but I would have done it anyway and I still do it now.

The reason Im asking so many questions now is because Ive been out of the hardware scene for a long time. I havent upgraded my computer since 2002-3ish. I no longer sell computer stuff and Im so busy learning about stuff at my work I dont have time to keep up.

i build my own pcs and everything I know is from experience in my 7 years of killing computers with my DELL. and i use many friends at my programming school and my big huge knowledge of PC forums :O

I went to a tech highschool jimmy, 4 years of "shop" (1 week of academics followed by 2 weeks of "shop" aka hands on classes) got me A+, Net+ and some MSCE & Cisco... I haven't attended college (i will one day) but it's 50/50 school work and hands on, i read a lot about this stuff.

This is the PSU I have.

My current PC is my first rig I built on my own. Or built period for that matter, every PC I have owned before was bought from the manufacturer. I haven't bothered to OC anything tho and I'm not sure I want to yet since I'm still learning about most stuff.

It will pass the 3GB mark yarr. As far as PSU's go make sure to choose something good, you don't wanna fry your system due to crappy PSU.

That CPU seems ridiculously cheap. What happened? I remember high-end CPU's running 600-800 bucks. I think I paid like $800 for my FX-53 back in the day

This is high end now and the one you asked is starting to get old.

Plus its just under 1K at newegg for new X6800.

MB: I forget the model, its NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI, with two SLI ready PCI-E slots (16x each).
RAM: 4gigs (and windows only sees 3gigs argh)
Video Card: GTX 8800 OC 700megs
Processor: Quad core Q6600 2.4gig

Im still setting everything up right now. Its working enough that I can post this. Oh and it cost a hell of a lot more than I expected lol.

Cost me a total of about 1200 bucks. A lot more than I wanted (800 was my goal), but the performance is worth the extra cash.
