Let's take a look at this. .999... reaches into infinity, right? That's what the (...) at the end represents. Using the example above if you get closer by half at an infinite rate then the difference would be written as .000..., correct?

It's the same with .999... if the number extends to infinity, the difference CAN reach zero....if the number were truly infinite, you would never be able to place the "1" at the end of it - that would make it finite. the difference between 1 and .999... would be written as .0000....

It's a matter of defintions. Infinite decimals are defined as the limit of series. The LIMIT. It doesn't matter if the series never reaches 1, because the limit EQUALS 1.

The reason this debate endures is that people don't understand infinity. It is not a number. There is no such thing as a sum of an infinite number of things. But there is this convenient idea: the limit. Thus infinite sums, which are initially meaningless, are given meaning by DEFINITION, not nature. But confusion results, because when the word "limit" is omitted, they forget that what they are dealing with is not, in fact, a sum, though it is written as if it were.

Despite how much I dislike Matti's avatar he does explain this the best to math-retards such as myself

Gdit, Matti. If you post on this thread one more time, you're going to get punched in the face when you get home.

Matti is my hero... lol
This also reminds me of limits.... had a whole big discussion on something similar to this in class.

9.99999...=10x this is the flaw of the entire calculation. everything after this is incorrect because of the incorrectness of this equation. this is a bit hard to explain but bear with me. when you multiply an infinite number by 10, you are adding a significant digit to it. therefore the imaginary "final digit" of .999... moves up a space and you must add a new "final digit" to the end. this is why the rest of your calculations work. you are ignoring that infinitely small (9/infinity) digit at the end of .999...

I've seen this trick before in calc classes, explained in a much better way than I just tried to do. But this is why your trick multiplies by 10, to make use of the truncation of /inf.

Kailyn's is the only post so far that appears right, as he touched on that same concept that I just posted.

1 is greater than .999... and the difference between the two digits is 1-over-infinity. For practical purposes, like those used in limit calculations, we can truncate and consider 1-over-infinity to be 0 and consider .999... to be 1. But they are actually not the same exact point on the infinitely divided number line.

lol this is silly.

.9999(repeating) is infinitesimally approaching 1 but will never equal 1. If .9999(repeating) equaled 1 I think the whole universe would start collapsing on itself.

btw hi.

.99999...= x

9.99999...=10x
9.99999... -.9999... = 10x- .999999.... = 10x -x
9 = 9x
x= 9/9 = 1

All this equation does is converts the decimal equivalents into their more accurate fractional counterparts.

Mathematicians have known for ages that you can not accurately represent in decimal format many fractional components, most obvious among those being the 1/9,2/9,3/9, etc..

To show it more accurately how 1 does not truely equal .9999.. repeating, consider:

1/infinity

Scientists consider 1/infinity to be 0, not because it is, but because it is the closest measureable number. In a single mathematical computation, this works quite well. In a hundred, or a million contiguous mathematical calculations, this will still continue to be accurate. But as those number of calculations begin to approach infinity, than the flaw is revealed.

If 1 truely equaled .9999... repeating, than performing the same calculation an infinite number of times should not change the result. Yet it does.

Whisp is also quite accurate in that you can not add, subtract, multiply, or divide infinity. Infinity is a concept and not a number and as such is not bound by mathematical constraints.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/0.999...

it gets front page on wikipedia. and the guy that writes the article seems very certain that .999... equals 1. i still stand by my case that their flaw happens when they multiply.

people who claim .999... =1 always seem to say the other side doesn't understand infinity, but i'd say it is they who don't understand infinity.
