Post subject:  New car

ok, right now i got a zippy turbo jetta. Its got about 85k on it so im looking into new cars. I test drove a supercharged cobalt today and loved it. My question is do i really need a nice car? I could just get a stock automatic out the door for like 12 if i wanted... Plus i got the bike... My dad said you only live once so, is it practical to get this when i put 40k miles on a car a year?

New ss stickers for 24k somehow. They put some bullshit dealer stuff on it that i dont want. XM, Onstar and spray coating. Its also has 700 miles on it cuz it was a demo 06'. I asked for 5k for the dub which was a good price. Yahoo stickers a new ss/s at 19.9 new.

My math is
22k (realistic sticker)
-5k (trade in)
-1k (700 mi demo..)
-500 (rebate)
---------
15.5k
+1.5k (tax/title/etc)
Total:17

dealer wants 18.5 out the door...

id recomment a new car, but not a cobalt, tehre gonna give you a great deal, and flop it over at the very end, and insurance is gonna be a bitch. and if your gonna go for a fast car, dont get an automatic, arim actualy had a 4door supercharged cobalt, manual. they didnt make 4 door last year but i guess they did this year, and it was a nice fast car and all, but he traded that in pretty quickly for a 2004 camry v6, automatic.... and it picks up really nice, i wouldnt be suprised with very little mods that i could be faster than a manual. ..

diesel VW man. get a diesel jetta or gti or something... lol

ive never seen that movie, saw the first and the third, and im about to turn 18. and as far as im concerned, a toyota camry and a volkswagon golf were in any of the movies, there was an 89 jetta in the first, but thats the only vw i saw.

but thats besides the point, cobalts are nice cars, but i hate the interior, the seats are uncomfortable as folk and the e-brake set up is retarted, you have to lift the center console up in order to apply the brake. and the insurance is retarted, even for an SS. it come stock with a nice sound system though.

Keep it on mind that any turbo engine that you must have high octane gas and it will EAT alot of fuel as well. Top of that the engine is setup for turbo use and if you have breakdown they will not be cheap to get it fix to engine and turbo.

Depreciation makes buying a new car a very illogical thing to do, best to look into a model a couple years old in good condition and get it at half price with a few thousand miles on it.

Usually GM cars you can get about $1-2k below invoice price. Not possible any lower, the trade in is fair (specially since its a VW). The C/SS is pretty decent, but for small block speedy cars the Neon takes the cake.

Well they stopped making the srt-4 in 05

And no i dont live at home

Im not buying used, i need a warranty

And the jetta will only go to 100k if im lucky. And yes it takes 93oct. My extended ran out 4 mo ago and my last check eng i got this week they wanted 2k (130$ for check eng. light alone). Also, the 01' wolfsberg is plagued with missfire issues

I also drove the g6 and it was shitty.

The honda was retarded looking but drove nice. It was 21 sticker and they said they wouldnt deal on it.

Si's are on backorder for 6mo

Hybrids in Chicago go for sticker and/or above... so no

insurance isnt an issue. I have a motorcycle, remember...

I told the dude i would think about it and if he gives me 17k out the door i might take it

I think a Cobalt is an ok car. That stock bottom end is built really well and it can handle a lot of horsepower. GM sells supercharger, exhaust, header, and some other upgrades for the cars and I hear they perform well. Hell GM even has the ECU reflashes for their products, so you don't have to bring it somewhere to get tuned. And their parts are rather cheap IMO.

Neon SRT-4 are ok also. I've seen both Cobalts and Neons at the track get tore up lol. Most people in AZ that own those cars can't drive for shit. I've seen both cars hit 16s in the 1/4 mile too many times. I have also seen both hit 13s with cheap mods, and good drivers.

I prefer imports but I'm not closeminded towards domestics at all. I think it's cool Dodge and Chevy decided to step into the quick 4 cylinder world. I hope that spreads the word to ignorant domestic drivers that think all V8s are fast and all 4 cylinders are slow.

Is the Honda you drove the new Civic Si? That is a nice car but I don't like the drive by wire throttle.

Well, i dont know if thats completly correct, i've had good experiences with Neon, not only that but all the neon's that i've seen here at the Moroso strip, have gotten very good results.

I say this from a non-import, small block hater standpoint, i don't like anything lower then a inline v6, i'm a muscle car guy, but the srt4 has performed well in my eyes.

Truth is, both cars are very decent, both look ok (Cobalt looks a little better), they are pretty confortable; but when it comes to speed, the srt4 is faster, has better tunning capabilities (turbo itself can be tuned up for more psi, it has more space compared to supercharger, has less parts, breaks less then supercharger [if not overtuned]).

Its aggreable that the Cobalt has better steering, but it has feedbak-free electronic steering, which can be a problem sometimes and may very well help in loosing control if not very careful.

both the chevy and dodge claim the cars can run a solid 14.3 @aprox 100mph

Its hard to campare an 07 or 06 with and 05 neon....

And yes there might be a little more on the market for turbos but you can upgrade a supercharger just as well.

Anything above a stage 1 turbo will need a full ecu rechip, new exhaust, new manifold, injectors, plugs... the 1.8t i have runs at 5-7pounds of boost. They claim it can run up to 12 pounds safely. Anything over that you need to rebuild the eng. with stronger crank etc.... Plus unless you go custom vw you will need to reconfigure piping and also oil lines for the bigger turbo.

Im not knocking turbos, hell i love mine. Im just saying the supercharger might be a nice new idea. And i went to another dealer and they found an new 07 with a few more mods for the same price.

Don't know if what's correct? SRT-4 running a 16? I didn't say every SRT-4 does it, but I've seen it too often. It happens when people don't know how to launch. Stock SRT-4 and Cobalt SS are both low 14 second cars if the person knows how to drive. And they break into 13s rather easily with cheap mods.

Honestly guys, i'm far from being a credible source...

But as a opinion, i think the C/SS is a little over rated for the price compared to something newgen. You're right about the stages in turbo and supercharger, but i know from experience it will cost you much more money to decently run & upgrade supercharged systems compared to turbo. I don't like supercharges because i'm used to larger blocks, and its common to see a snapped belt damage engine electronics & parts in a supercharged vehicle.

But its all up to you anyways, i'm saving for a vette (probably this time next year i'll have one), i'll be happy with it for quite sometime.

I would enjoy owning a Corvette. I would kill for a new Z06 lol. I am not too biased these days. There's many domestics I still like. The new Corvettes are a thing of beauty.

I went to PIR for CRA (Club Racing Arizona) road races a couple weekends ago. There was an R33 and an R34 skyline there. They were hot as fuck. Neither street legal of course :( You should go to that sometime. It's a little far, but it's free. You can watch people with new M3s get owned by people in Civics that are better drivers lol.
