He's done such a good job with this war from the start. Another brilliant idea!

WASHINGTON - President Bush, working to recraft his strategy in Iraq, said Tuesday that he plans to increase the size of the U.S. military so it can fight a long-term war against terrorism.

In an interview with The Washington Post, Bush said he has asked his new defense chief, Robert Gates, to report back to him with a plan to increase ground forces. The president did not say how many troops might be added, but said he agreed with officials in the Pentagon and on Capitol Hill that the current military is being stretched too thin to deal with demands of fighting terrorism.

"I'm inclined to believe that we do need to increase our troops — the Army, the Marines," Bush said in the Oval Office session. "And I talked about this to Secretary Gates and he is going to spend some time talking to the folks in the building, come back with a recommendation to me about how to proceed forward on this idea."

Top generals have expressed concern that even temporarily shipping thousands of more troops would be largely ineffective in the absence of bold new political and economic steps, and that it would leave the already stretched Army and Marines Corps even thinner once the surge ended.

They also worry that it feeds a perception that the strife and chaos in Iraq is mainly a military problem; in their view it is largely political, fed by economic distress.

Bush said he has not yet made a decision about a new strategy for Iraq, which he is expected to announce next month. He said he was waiting for Gates to return from his expected trip to Iraq to get a firsthand look at the situation.

"I need to talk to him when he gets back," the president said. "I've got more consultations to do with the national security team, which will be consulting with other folks. And I'm going to take my time to make sure that the policy, when it comes out, the American people will see that we ... have got a new way forward."

Bush said his decision to increase the size of the armed forces was in response not just to the war in Iraq, but to the broader struggle against Islamic extremists around the globe.

"It is an accurate reflection that this ideological war we're in is going to last for a while and that we're going to need a military that's capable of being able to sustain our efforts and to help us achieve peace," he said.

There should be an instant impeachment clause in the Constitution saying that if a President's approval rating drops below 20%, he gets impeached \:D/

It could work,
John McCain has been recomending this for awhile, One last huge surge of troops could do well, everyone complains that bush and rumsfeld didnt send in enough troops to begin with. Im hearing it would just be a surge, not really a long tour of duty

i like mccain enough to take him seriously. while i'd rather the war just be over, if he thinks the best thing is to send more troops, then who knows, maybe it is.

but bush? he's retarded and he'll figure out the worst possible path and stumble down it.

No, the war is a logical fallacy in its own right; it's impossible to "achieve the objective" because the objective is unachievable, at least through the means we are pursuing now. Sending Halliburton to rebuild the infrastructure and trying to fight sectarian violence on both sides doesn't work. Personally, the only solution I can see is dividing the country into three regions for Shi'ites. Sunnis, and Kurds.

If the three regions are governed by Jack Bauer, Chuck Norris, and Solid Snake...it could work.

When the Afghanistan and Iraq wars started, I watched the news and read the headlines often. I was interested to see everything that unfold. I disagreed with Iraq war from the start even when they "had weapons of mass destruction". Ever since I realized we were lied to, I have disagreed with it even more. I still read the headlines because Yahoo is my homepage but that's all I care to know anymore. I wish I didn't even read about it because it mostly just pisses me off. I hate the way America handles things and I fucking HATE George Bush. I can't even understand why he has support from anybody. He has proven himself to be a worthless lieing piece of shit time and time again, with more than just his warmongering.

If these people don't want to stop blowing up eachother's mosques and setting eachother on fire, I would kill them all. We don't need to use a ton of soldiers to do that either, just bomb them into submission (or until they are all ashes whichever comes first). I don't see what adding a bunch of soldiers to a police warfare effort is going to improve. More guys to watch the Sunnis blow up Shiites? Seriously fuck these people. They don't respect us enough to stop killing eachother, they need to fear us instead. If we just leave with the current situation as it is, our country looks extremely weak and incapable of finishing. I would bet the majority of their people are involved with the insurgency, and most of those are in secret. Just slaughter them all lol. That would of course would start a larger scale war.

If we just get up and leave, then this will just come back to bite us in the ass later on anyways. Either through what the Iraqis do to eachother, or how they organize an effort against our country later. The Reagan administration started this crap anyways along with the fun we will have with Iran sometime in the future. It is almost inevitable. Either our country has the intestinal fortitude to finish this or we wait it out until the nations that oppose us gather enough power to overtake us. If Iraq is made into a democracy its only a matter of time until it is controlled by people seeking revenge against the US.

oHh i'll tell you out right, your really annoying the hell out of me.

Seriously how many god damn times do i have to ask you to try ( TRY ) to stay on subject.
Instead of adding meat and potatoes to the subject matter and actually adding something, what you bring is along is more like jello or some shit....

How's about giving people somewhat of an idea on what you think of the subject matter rather than being a moron and typing/ Dmitry- HAHA druff I are likely vote fo jew et-anus

You merely throw a comment to someone with literally no weight behind it. And then you get upset when you aren't heard/respected or get upset when people start removing your posts...

This is what you had to say about the entire thread.. Everyone else had something somewhat intelligent to say and you had that to say. You can't even comment on ponuh, because at the very least when you tell him something he actually tries to listen! You however I just don't understand why you can't actually try and show people you actually have an active brain working up there!

I'm pretty sure this war will come back to bite us, nomatter what. The culture of the people over there is one of confrontation. I don't see it ever changing, personally.

It's almost like we just need to build a giant wall around all of those people and leave them to their own devices.

Of course, we can't do that, 'cause of the oil. haha. But seriously... Nomatter what we did over there, we'd have as much people hating us as we ever did.

Our response to 9/11 could have been dropping bags of my little ponies and boxes of pringles, and we'd still be called out by giving people infidel gifts, or whatever.

I almost wonder if the extremists over there didn't like breed out the portion of their brain that dictates reason, or something.

I'm against the war, but not because I think people in the middle east are swell. I just think it was dumb for us to pick a fight with people who hold grudges longer than your mother-in-law.

No, Ridere I don't think the extremists lack reason. I think when we destroyed their infrastructure we kind of gave a lot of them a reason to join the insurgency.
