So im looking into a new computer. I have decided that its just not worth it to build one right now. First of all, ati hasn't even released whats going to compete with the 500$ nvidia 8k series. Some sites are saying that ATI's new card is going to be about 3-4x faster then anything on the market today. I think this is true being that they were bought out by AMD. I foresee multi processor cards in the very near future.

How soon till we see the dual cores get phased out. They are already working on quad cores so when are we going to see them? I was reading an article that they have created a proc that can run in the 6ghz range through restructure of just how the processor thinks. I also think processors are going to change a lot with the release of vista.

*sigh* at technology. Any thoughts anyone?

IMHO buying a computer atm is a big no no, some of the examples you stated above confirm this.

idk, it seems like there is always something "new" around the corner. New computer technology cycles like every 4-6 months now. If you're always waiting for the next new thing, you could be waiting forever. If the dual cores (namely intel core2) prices start to drop when quad cores are near, I'd say jump all over that, because quad cores are going to cost a buttload for a while. I have an intel core2duo E6400 and it's well equipped (2 gigs corsair xms, NVIDIA 7900GT) and runs like a dream.

It all really depends on your budget and how long you want to wait.

I bought that awesome AGP card and some memory recently, but still running a 2.8Ghz P4 and i've been able to run all games i throw at it. Some i have to just lower the resolution for it to be good, others i dont (fear i couldn't play max res, battlefield i can max everything)

I wan't to upgrade sometime soon just for bragging rights, because i don't need it.

You guys would be jealous of my 1.6 GHZ Pentium 4 processor, AGP 4x motherboard, soundcard that stopped working and needs to be replaced, and 5400RPM 80 GB harddrive that's 90% full.

I do want a new PC. I've had mine since March of 2002, and the only part i've upgraded is the graphics card (to play FFXI haha). It's so behind. My stepbrother has an awesome gaming PC he built and he's gonna help me do my own....whenever I feel comfortable spending money on that. I still have a lot of other stuff I'd rather have right now. .

Well I was at Aalan's house when he ordered his new PC a couple of days ago.

Athlon 64x2 (dual core 2.6 ghz)
2 gigs of RAM
2 Nvidia GeForce 8800 running in SLI (ones w/ 620 MB of DDR3 each)
22 Inch widescreen monitor/HDTV (already has this)
Cryo cooling system

Needless to say I am jealous of the new gaming rig.
