What do you look for in music? #1 - Difficult to perform: physical/mechanical skill is the most important factor I look for. This would, for instance, immediately rule out bands like White Stripes. #2 - The ability for aggressive vocals: not all vocals must be aggressive, but if a band sings all pussy-like, I have no interest. This immediately rules out almost all female vocalists (sorry haha), all high-voiced metal, and all bands with names like "The _____s." (The Doors get special exception because of uniqueness #3 - Uniqueness: you gotta have a signature style, whether it's a lyric style, vocal style, mixing style, etc. You can't just throw any unique thing in there, for instance I think any brass instrument immediately drains my ears of blood. #4 - Limit the repetition: if there's one thing I can't stand in music its repetition. I don't need to hear the same thing over and over. If I do I'll turn it off. This rules out almost all techno, punk, emo, pop, etc. Lots of shit. I like complexity and require it in my music. Don't use 4/4 beats exclusively. #5 - The ability for aggressive guitar: like vocals, not all guitar must be aggressive. In fact I love a little soft melody here and there. But if all you do is soft pussy shit, I'm sorry but I turn it off. This rules out otherwise good music like John Mayer. #6 - Memorable songs: if you have all the above qualities but just can't fart out a memorable song to save your life, I'm not interested. This rules out stuff like Pissing Razors. #7 - Lyrics that flow well: The main thing I look for in lyrics is flow. The lyrics have to roll off the tongue. This rules out bands like Type O Negative. It also rules out approximately 75% of Tool's songs, meanwhile their other songs are perfect. #8 - Seriousness: if I want comedy, I'll listen to standup or watch an owen wilson flick. Not from my music. #9 - Lyrical content: while the formula for good lyrics is complicated, I can tell immediately if I approve or not. I would approve of political/democratic/antiestablishment types of lyrics, and I would also approve of aggressive/fight/war/death lyrics. Softhearted lyrics can be about losing a loved one or feeling depressed. What I don't like in lyrics is religion, football, sex, love, conformity, confusion towards science, gang shit, hunting, food, pop culture, popularity, or blindly being anti for no real reason except to be cool. This rules out lots and lots of shit like country music (which is ruled out by every single point lol), etc.. #10 - Image: yea it's not too important, but I don't want to listen to music if guys are wearing suits or have a mohawk or do the duckwalk while playing bass or jump up and down a lot while playing or wear any kind of "nice" clothes or just look retarded. Mudvayne is the exception because they look retarded as a joke. |

if a song can make me think or evoke an emotion out of me it's usually got me. That or if there is something so different about it (like something I've never seen/heard before) then it has my interest. Sometimes if a song gets stuck in my head I like it but I've also had some very bad songs stuck in my head. I like multiple genres, multiple songs, my IPod has about 4,500 songs on it, some good, some classic, even some bad 80's songs that are fun to listen to at parties and shit. It's such a hard question to ask because I can't exactly answer it totally by typing it's answer. I can't exactly tell you what I like in a song, but I can tell you whether or not I like a song if I hear it. |

im a big fan of techmetal, so stuff thats really hard to perform.. composition of the music is also a factor for me, i like the crazy spastic time signatures, such as dillinger, musshuga.. i like that crazy shit though.. originality is a must.. kinda have to have thier own sound.. cant stand generic sounds.. ie: emo music.. such as fallout boy, who sounds like.. panic! at the disco, who sounds like taking back sunday, who sounds like every other one.. oh yea, DEFTONES ARE THE SHIT!@ |

I pretty much agree exactly to what you have listed except for one thing, Amy Lee's voice gives me wood, and now she looks like she can afford to eat lol Quote: oh yea, DEFTONES WERE THE SHIT!@

i'm nowhere near as fussy or as specific as whisp/navyr. Basically any given band or artist has a 50/50 chance of producing a track I like each time they release one. I can't really pin down anything that makes me like it or not and I am hopeless at remembering things like who played this, whats this song called, what kind of style is this and how is it different to this one. Hell sometimes I could hear two songs off the same album and not even realise it was the same artist lol. I don't think I have a favourite band or song or anything, I just turn on the radio and the first station that gets a clear signal wins it for me. For making playlists on my iPod I just took everything off my housemates computers via the network and offically I have the same "tastes" as them lol. So to sum it up, I'm not really bothered about music, if people ask me what I like I just do a squall and say whatever |
