The normal size of a bass is around 35" I believe, so would a bass that is 30-1/2" sound the same? I want to get an SG bass but I wasn't sure if the shorter length would make a difference. Also, are basses tuned on the same frequency as guitars(435Hz I think)? |

35" is the scale. 30.5" scale is fine for a 4 string bass as your low E will not be affected as much as a low B would. A 30" scale is considered a short scale (34" is the standard). Scale differences only change the "sloppiness" or tension of a string. Have you ever tuned a guitar with a .45 gauge low E down to a B or C? It gets really flimsy and sloppy. A longer scale reduces this. A low E of a bass is about 41Hz and a low B is about 35Hz. Edit: My J Bass is a 34" scale but my BTB 5 is a 35.5" which is quite long. |

Idk if size matters. Does it have fewer frets or something? Is that a Gibson? I have a Rogue lol. It's a cheap brand. A is 440(hz or w/e) isnt it? So is E 435? idk. I use ap tuner that I dl'd from download.com But I have to use a headphone amp or a microphone to pick up the sound. Plugging my bass straight in the computer doesnt work. I have a Dean Stack in the box headphone amp and I actually wouldn't recommend it. Probably any amplifer would work, just use the line out. |

Hofner and Fender popularized the "Short Scale" bases (which had a 30" scale) with the Violin bass and the Mustang. I believe they have only 20 frets. A = 440Hz on a guitar. |

Yeah it's a Gibson. Well, I'd be getting an epiphone since I don't have enough money for another real gibson, and I play guitar mostly and just need a bass for temporary stuff hopefully. Thanks Matti ![]() |

My 1st bass was a violin bass, but it was a rogue lol. All my basses have been Rogue. I'm cheap >< |
