Post subject:  so.. read any good books lately?
haven't heard anyone talk about good books they read lately or have heard about. I'm currently reading the prestige, I like it in the sense that you catch a lot of stuff the movie kinda blows by quickly. I also just recently read in cold blood and the stranger and reccomend them both as well. Any bookworms out there? give me some good reads.

The only books I have read in my life (other than school) were the harry potter and lord of the rings series (including Hobbit and Silmarillion), and 1 sword of shanarra book. I will probably never read another book again haha. I have bad ADD, I prefer video games or movies.

I just finished Memnoch The Devil by Anne Rice. I wasn't happy with the end. :(

I've been on a huge Anne Rice kick lately - I have The Vampire Armand coming up next.

Yep, and it's depressing as hell how she feels about her own work (The Vampire Chronicles.)

Her pattern of political contributions since 1998 suggests that she continues to identify with the Democratic Party [2]. for example she endorsed John Kerry for president in 2004 and she opposes the War in Iraq.

All right Matti I have and read "The Vampire Armand", I hope you enjoy it. Yea I used to read a lot of Anne Rice stuff but I haven't read anything by her recently. I think the last book I read of hers was Merrick (I named a mule after it).

Edit: Lol Now I see why I have not read anything of hers recently.

Finished up The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins a few months ago. Almost through with Hegemony and Survival by Noam Chomsky, starting Collapse by Jared Diamond (Guns Germs and Steel was ridiculously good) and other than that I'm pretty much spending all the rest of my reading time on school.

I recently finished House of Bush, House of Saud, which I thought was pretty interesting. I've also just started A Brief History of Time, which I wish was a movie (narrated entirely by Steven Hawking of course), so that I could take psychedelic drugs and watch it.

I think i am done reading books after the next Harry potter, i just finished Bourne Identity and then watched the movie, you cannot even remotely consider 2 characters names, and the name of an organization to be "based on" and Eragon got raped to shit in movie form too.

The Long Walk by Slavomir Rawicz is a good one. Bio of a Polish cavalry officer taken prisoner during WW2. His torture, imprisonment, escape, and deadly trek (with 7 companions) from Siberia to India are chronicled.

Recently read the newly constructed Tolkien book The Children of Hurin. This is a massively extended version of the Lay of the Children of Hurin from the Silmarillion. The writing has existed in scattered forms for many years but Christopher Tolkien has compiled it into one cohesive volume.

Sarah by JT Leroy was another book I couldn't put down. Fictionalized bio of a 12 year old ladyboy prostitute in a West Virginia truckstop. Sadly I loaned it out and never got it back and the stupid thing might be out of print now.


Honestly though, at this point if I'm looking for anything it'll be some type of history/bio or myth/religion. I'm tired of feigned depth, and I've been that way for a while. It's a hard stance to explain I guess, especially considering I haven't really bothered about it for 5 or 6 years. This all stems from my loathing The Catcher in the Rye, if that helps explain it at all.

yeh but I didn't find catcher in the rye in to have "fake depth" I don't even know where/how/why someone could discern such a thing. Unless you despise all fiction because it's not reguritated facts.

I definitely think there's such a thing as "fake depth". It seems a lot of people, even people who read quite a bit, read only fiction. Good fiction can be extremely powerful but nothing expands a person like good non-fiction. I think people should read more non fiction than fiction.

I'm reading Everything is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer. It's very beautiful.
It's hard for me to read fiction, cause I get so into it. This is probably the first novel I read in a long time. I'm usually reading nonfiction stuff cause it's easier to distance myself from the book.
