Recently i bought a new pc, and after running into a few problems when i got it i had it stabalized at a lower setting then expected as seen in these pics below:







After a few months running my machine at these speeds (and without powering it down) i decided to turn it off for the night, once i rebooted it when i got back from work it wouldn't actually boot. One stick of memory went bad (i had it running above 500mhz each, but same config).



Problem is, ever since i got my new memory (same ram) i can't clock that high anymore, even when i choose not to clock the ram. The bios allows me to unstrap the memory/FSB clocks when i increase the cpu freq. I was using uGuru to overclock and it did a great job, but since i was able to overclock on the fly (when booted into windows) and it didn't have an option to unstrap ram/cpu clocks when cpu freq is multiplied, i think it was still overclocking my ram and causing it to BSOD. I'm running a normally aspirated setup and so i know i can only push it so much, but i reached 3.0ghz at one point (crashed in a 1hr stability test closer to end though), 2.8ghz stable. This is how i'm running it now stable and i'm using nTune to do my overclocking.



My question is if the problem really lies in memory only, i mean i think so because it's the only thing that got changed since that setup, i deff get a BSOD because of memory, but when i dont it just hangs and it usually hangs when i go over 2.8; i don't know how many of you mess with this stuff but let me know if any of you have any experience with this stuff, maybe i'm overlooking something ya know.

I flashed my bios today to the latest version and wow, i got so many OC'ing options and results that i can't wait to get my new cpu.

As of now i have default BIOS OC clocks, i was able to OC through uGuru to 3.5Ghz without touching voltage (unstable & froze 1/2 way through OCCT), so i should be able to OC that high and keep it stable once i up the voltage.

CPU temps range are from 34C - 36C under 100% load @ 3.14Ghz.

in a nut shell, when the new DFI board came out last year coolaler (best OC'er ever) got it at his company and pushed it to the limit. he took 2x512mb of ram and pushed them over 1506mhz at 4.0-3-2-1 2.65volts and had dual core 2.66 ghz up to 3.66ghz only 350FSB.

the entire thread wanted him to do a FSB test and they all doubted the boards ability to hit above 533, the setting on the mobo. there is a pic halway down the page of what he OC'd it to. if you cant find it, it 600mhz, well above OC range for many motherboards.

Step 1. Take that Abit board back and get an ASUS board.

Step 2. Enjoy the increased reconfigurability and higher 3DMark scores. :P

Also, what memory are you using? It looks like your timings are a little loose.. Nice OC though - What was your budget with that machine and how are you liking the C2D?

ASUS makes sweet MBs. I have a P5k3 deluxe but I still need to OC my rig. It's my first PC I built so I still have some more learning to do on that. :/

I'm anti-Asus and anti-DFI i've bought 2 boards from asus previously and had problems, i built systems with DFI and had problems as well. I always liked Abit and i know for a fact this is one of the best SLI boards out in the market. Reason i haven't OC'ed mine like crazy is because i just haven't had the time and when i did, i got lazy and half ass'ed it. I took about 2 hr's to flash bios and OC this yesterday, i didn't put much time into it at all, when i do better research i'm sure i'll be able to get more juice. All i really wanted to do was get ready for the new CPU i bought, and i just got it today.

I'm running Corsairs Dominators TWIN2X2048-6400C4D @ 4-4-4-12 T2 850Mhz OC'ed. I spent about $1400 maybe a bit more earlier this year, i like the C2D but i'm waiting for more software support to buy the Quad.

If you're constantly overclocking your systems why are you surprised when they have problems?

They have problems which aren't related to OC'ing, problems that will effect OC efficiensy, driver & bios problems and last but not least; support problems. I haven't owned one in a year+ and i understand that in the market of electronic equipment encountering "Lemons" happens often but i just had bad experiences with their products so i stay away from them.

the DFI Infinity 975x did ultimately have problems when it came out with efficency, but it has been fixed and its one of the fastest boards you can buy granted you have the power, processor and cooling system to do so <3
such as your CPU is running at 350mhz with a x9 multiplier. under uber OC conditions, the DFI 975 can run at 600mhz times that by 9 and you got an insane OC

I used to be die-hard Abit until the AN8 which was produced about the time they went bankrupt.. I hate them now. I have to agree that ASUS has shitty support but Abit's online thing (Don't remember the name) is pretty nice.

The A7N8X deluxe is what sold me on ASUS but I liked the NF7-s more so I switched but never again! I've never used DFI but the stupid graphics on the boxes always deterred me from them. lol

Anyway, looks great especially for the price but I think the non-XMS2 Dominator ram would have made you a little happier with your OC.

That's understandable and like i said it's been over a year. I never oc'ed DFI's because those were purchased for other people but i had to RMA 3 of them because of bad voltage controllers (overheating VCM's too)

All in the bios yarr, upping the bus speed is where it's at. Don't touch voltage if you dont want to ruin your CPU, and get ready to clear CMOS frequently.

I think you can get it to 2.8ghz safe, but 3.0ghz might need a little more juice. Try 2.6Ghz first, bench it and make sure it's stable (just to make sure) OCCT does a great job in fully (and i mean fully as in testing 100% CPU load) testing stability of OC's.
If it's stable @ 2.6 move up to 2.8... (that is if you don't encounter issues)
