09:15AM Wednesday Dec 05 2007 by Karl tags: wireless · hardware · networking · Oddities Tipped by rock_ There's no solid scientific evidence that Wi-Fi is a health hazard, but that hasn't stopped a parade of people from trying to stop Wi-Fi deployment. In the U.S., teachers have sued schools to derail installs, while angel guidance consultants have launched campaigns against Wi-Fi in their free time. In Canada, colleges have banned Wi-Fi, equating it to "second hand smoke." In the UK, some say they can feel the impact when they enter a room, while others have started using Wi-Fi blocking paint (at $492 per can) and sleep under silver plated mosquito netting. The scare-mongering in the UK wasn't helped by a recent BBC report that falsely claimed that Wi-Fi creates three times as much radiation as mobile phone masts. The sensationalist program resulted in some London politicians attempting to ban Wi-Fi use in schools. An official BBC complaints ruling has subsequently found the program was misleading. Ben Goldacre, a doctor who runs the Bad Science website, stated that the programme makers had made melodramatic, misleading television instead of an informed documentary. "In 28 minutes of TV you could have given a good summary of the research evidence so that people could make up their own minds. But that would not get you as many viewers," he said. A great quote from ITWeek columnist Les Hatton: "All I can say in reassurance is that this sort of mathematically dysfunctional scare-mongering drivel really makes me cross." As an aside, check out this entertaining cartoon at Wellington Grey that takes aim at the media's reaction to the great Wi-Fi menace. link http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/WiFi-Wont-Kill-Your-Family-After-All-89965 I hated when ppl panic about this crap, when I use it at home and I am not getting any stupid here. |

worried about wi-fi and not the 11,000 different radio stations that are passing through your brain at any given time. this shit is about as stupid as people not having kids because it messes up there carbon footprint. all this extreme bullshit needs to just go away already so people can worry about actual important issues. |

I'm getting sick of this shit, why don't they just come out and say that everything is killing you or causing cancer... Taking a shit, causes cancer! Breathing causes cancer! Farting causes cancer! waking up causes cancer! and so does sleep for that matter.. Fuck this shit, people harp on me for smoking, when i know the risks and i don't care, but they fail to see everything else that is apprarently bad for them. |

My chemistry was laughing about this when we were talking about waves. Colors are at a higher frequency than radio, tv, or wi-fi and last I heard going to an art gallery didn't give anyone malignent brain tumors. |

I forget Computer science and English. Why two semesters of chemistry is a pre-requisite to the major is something I still haven't figured out yet. |

I get a lot of shit for smoking also. My favorite is "you know that kills you right?". I usually respond with "I could die in a car accident tomorrow". I expecially love when the fat unhealthy looking people at work try and give me shit. |

A car is a calculated risk because there's a low chance you'll get into an accident and a lower chance you'll die. Smoking almost always leads to complications, so your rebuttal makes shit for sense. Then again it probably satisfies someone who is lame enough to walk up to someone and yell at them for smoking. |

That's pretty much what I mean. Of course if you give it thought it doesn't make sense, but it's just my smart ass reply to people who walk up and say something (it happens so much seriously). I would like to quit. I have quit many times (for a year at a time once). Cigarettes and alchohol are the 2 most unhealthy things I do, and it makes little sense because I work out often. If I quit both of those things I'd be much healthier. Also I'd be as irritable and hateful as you. That's what it does to me. |
