Quote:
BOSTON (Reuters) - "w00t", an expression of joy coined by online gamers, was crowned word of the year on Tuesday by the publisher of a leading U.S. dictionary.

Massachusetts-based Merriam-Webster said "w00t" -- typically spelled with two zeros -- reflects a new direction in the American language led by a generation raised on video games and mobile phone text-messaging.

It's like saying "yay", the dictionary said.

"It could be after a triumph or for no reason at all," Merriam-Webster said.

Visitors to Merriam-Webster's Web site were invited to vote for one of 20 words and phrases culled from the most frequently looked-up words on the site and submitted by readers.

Runner-up was "facebook" as a new verb meaning to add someone to a list of friends on the Web site Facebook.com or to search for people on the social networking site.

Merriam-Webster President John Morse said "w00t" reflected the growing use of numeric keyboards to type words.

"People look for self-evident numeral-letter substitutions: 0 for O; 3 for E; 7 for T; and 4 for A," he said. "This is simply a different and more efficient way of representing the alphabetical character."

One Web site, http://www.thinkgeek.com, already sells T-shirts with the word "w00t" printed on the front.

"w00t belongs to gamers the world over. It seems to have been derived from the obsolete 'whoot' which essentially is another way to say 'hoot' which itself is a shout or derisive laugh," Think Geek said on its Web site.

"But others maintain that w00t is the sound several players make while jumping like bunnies in Quake III," it added, referring to a popular video game.

Online gamers often replace numbers and symbols with letters to form what Merriam-Webster calls an "esoteric computer hacker language" known as "l33t speak." This translates into "leet", which is short for "elite".

A separate survey of words used in the media and on the Internet by California-based Global Language Monitor produced a different set of winners on Tuesday. "Hybrid" took top honours as word of the year with "climate change" the top phrase.

Global Language Monitor, which uses an algorithm to track words and phrases in the media and on the Internet, said "hybrid" had broad connotations of "all things green from biodiesel to wearing clothes made of soy to global warming".

Runner-up was "surge," based on the "surge" of 30,000 extra U.S. troops deployed to Iraq since mid-June, followed by the word "Bluetooth," a technology used to connect electronic devices via radio waves.

"The English language is becoming more and more a globalised language every year," said Global Language Monitor president Paul Payack, noting that this year's list included words also culled from India, Singapore, China and Australia.

The destruction of our language through this shit really bothers me. If you don't believe it's destroying the English language, go tour a high school and read some of the fucking papers.

There's nothing good about text message shorthand entering becoming legitimized. Either you're a fucking idiot or a contrarian or both. It's a bad thing all around.

Ya, I do think the English language has been going down hill also. For once I agree with Ponhu on something, but text short hand and internet words arn't the only thing. It irrates me to no end when people talk like that. Thats one of the reasons I refuse to have a cell phone, they are more trouble then they are helpfull.

I've never said "w00t" irl in my life...never will. That word is stupid. I hear people say "owned" irl more than anything. I never say that either. Some fat kid who used to me in my car club used to say "pwnt" irl all the time. That really irritated me for some reason.

I am guilty as saying "oh em gee" or "double u tee eff" irl being a smartass. I'm of course being sarcastic when I use those. Oh and "lol" when playing Halo with Deejay and his roommate :-P

I got used to seeing this crap and not be bothered by it, just last week i went inside Dominos pizza with my girlfriend to get some "cinnastix" and we arrived in the middle of an argument between the manager and his employee. Apparently the manager was upset at the girl for wearing a confederate flag shirt and the girl didn't know why. These were colored folks and it was interesting to see how the girl had no clue about the Civil war, or even what it meant. The girls age range was probably between 16-18, as you can see the education here isn’t the greatest. After that she proceeded to txt on her Blackberry Pearl.

Im not too worried about this web\text slang distroying our english. Dont forget that Sunsine is a Teacher for grade 7&8 (shes not a supply teacher anymore). She knows I enjoy reading terrible work from terrible students.

Im not sure that web slang is really taking over. Its not like the smart students are putting LOL or WOOT in their essays. Its the not-so-smart students who generally do it. Web\Text slang is just a new form of poor grammer. Its not like teachers are going to start accepting essays with web slang in it.

Every generation has its own slang. I see it all the time reading vintage comics. I can be tough trying to read a comic from the 60s. At times the Beatnik slang makes no sense at all. Im sure people in the 60s were worried that it wouldnt go away. Most of it did, but some of those groovy terms are still in use today.

A girl that I used to work with would write notes to our manager when she couldn't work or about other random things, and she would always use shorthand with like "2", "b", etc., which always annoyed the hell out of me. Then again, she wasn't the brightest person either.

I hate when people use it for everything. Like "wut" instead of "what" and "2" instead of "too" "b" instead of "be" "c" instead of "see". I have friends that text absolutely everything like that. It annoys me for some reason.

example

wut r u doin 2night

instead of

what are you doing tonight?

I always text the whole words because it looks less retarded, and doesn't take me any longer.

yeh I try to stray from the shorthand in text messages whenever possible cuz I'm a 28 yr old dude and I don't need someone reading them and thinking i'm a 14 yr old chick. But I will if I'm like driving or something and need to make the text as short as possible. I believe my gf and I had a discussion about this when we first started talking, she said she had a friend who was a grammar nazi and would rip her apart for using internet shorthand in her text messages so she stopped. I have to say that I prefer reading non shorthand texts so I'm glad she doesn't do it.

Yeah it's girls that do it the most for some reason. My rommate always texts completely in shorthand, and I give him shit for texting like a girl.
