It will be a while...but it's something to look forward to. Expecially since they want to use some original cast members. Ian Mckellen was such a good Gandalf. It wouldn't be the same without him.

Quote:
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Director Peter Jackson, New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc said on Tuesday they have agreed to make two movies based on the book "The Hobbit" by J.R.R. Tolkien, ending months of legal wrangling.

Jackson, the director of the smash hit "Lord of the Rings" movies, and producer Fran Walsh will executive produce both a "Hobbit" movie and a sequel, but no decision has been made about who will direct the films, Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne, co-chairmen and co-CEOs of New Line told Reuters.

MGM Chairman Harry Sloan, who was credited by all parties for bringing about the deal, said Jackson found it "impossible" to direct the film and meet proposed release dates in 2010 and 2011 due to other projects on which he is now working.

"He can't get it scheduled and he doesn't want the fans to have to wait for the next two movies," Sloan said. He said the studios might postpone the films if Jackson changed his mind.

Jackson's representative could not be reached for comment.

Jackson, Walsh and the studios share approval "on all major creative elements" and will start considering screenwriters and directors in January, Shaye said.

The movies will be made simultaneously in New Zealand, starting in 2009. Industry experts estimated the films would each cost $150 million to $200 million to make, based in part on the $400 million cost of the first three and inflation.

The studios will likely have to negotiate more expensive deals with "Rings" cast members, such as Ian McKellen as Gandalf the wizard, if any of them return for "The Hobbit." But they could save money on special effects that were designed and built for the "Rings" films and could be reused.

'NOT AN OPTION'

Fantasy film "The Hobbit" tells of a world inhabited by wizards, dwarfs, elves and little people called hobbits, who include the central character, Bilbo Baggins.

"The Hobbit" preceded Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" books, which were made into three hit movies by New Line that grossed roughly $3 billion at global box offices, starting with 2001's "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring."

Jackson and Walsh envisioned the first film covering the events of "The Hobbit" and the second bridging the 80-year gap between that novel and the first "Lord of the Rings" book.

It was that vision that led MGM, which holds the film rights to the book and is looking for new movie franchises, to insist that Jackson and Walsh make the films.

"Once (they) played out their vision for 'The Hobbit' as two movies ... MGM just took the position that we wanted to deal with Peter and it was not an option to do it with anybody else," Sloan said.

Sloan said the studios "would welcome as much of the original cast as possible," adding that "some of them have even said they are interested."

For years, the making of a "Hobbit" movie had been delayed while Jackson and New Line wrangled over profits from the "Rings" films. The director had sued New Line claiming it owed him money. Jackson and New Line have now settled that suit.

The filmmakers set up a Web site, thehobbitblog.com, to keep fans -- who loudly protested the making of "The Hobbit" without Jackson -- apprised of casting and other developments.

MGM and New Line, a unit of Time Warner Inc, will co-finance the films, with New Line distributing in the United States and MGM internationally. MGM is a closely held company owned by private equity firms and media divisions of Sony Corp and Comcast Corp.

The thing I like most about this is that it'll be two movies, which means they can seriously flesh out the characters and setting. The Hobbit is a one movie story, easily.

Interesting that they will bridge the Hobbit>Fellowship gap in a movie all its own. So many interesting things happen between the Hobbit and the LotR but are only covered in timelines at the back of Return of the King or mentioned in passing in the "Council of Elrond" chapter of FotR. Sauron's return to Mordor, the rebuilding of Barad-Dur, his open declaration against the free people, Gollum's wandering search for the ring, Aragorn's adventures in the wild, his friendship with Gandalf, and his service as a Rider of Rohan and soldier of Gondor, along with Saruman's web of lies are all things I look forward to.

I find it odd they make such a big deal out of returning cast members. Gandalf, Bilbo, Gollum, and Elrond are the only characters in Hobbit and LotR, besides a cameo by Gloin at the Council of Elrond (book). It would be fun to see Legolas in the background at the court of the Thranduil the king of the Mirkwood elves though, since he is the prince. Would also be pretty cool to see Aragorn as a 10 year old in Rivendell.

omahgah Ponuh is my knight in shining armor.

Meanwhile I remembered they my have thrown the whole timeline of FotR out the window in the movie. In the book, Frodo's journey doesn't begin until 17 years after Bilbo's big 111th birthday party (which, I'll have you KNOW, is also Frodo's 33rd birthday). In the movie that whole sequence seems to get swept up pretty quickly, so the 17 year gap may be tossed. Then again they do make Bilbo look older when we meet him again in Rivendell so eh.

Ponuh said that because they can focus one movie on the Hobbit story from the book (they could easily follow that book in a single movie) then another movie for bridging the gap between the Hobbit and the Fellowship of the Ring. Which I agree will be awesome.

And yeah...a lot of events happened between the Hobbit and the FOTR. Maybe they will begin the 2nd movie like FOTR, and wrap up years of events between the Hobbit and the 2nd movie in a couple minutes at the beginning. Then focus the rest on Sauron's return, with side stories showing random events with other characters. I don't know...regardless I'm looking forward to it.

TS, read the post again, it makes sense.

I'd rather see The Hobbit in two movies as well.. I think, it'll give the film more time to develop points outside of the critical characters and scenes which is nice so that the whole production doesn't seem like it's just Jackson directing traffic trying to cover all the plot points. Can't say I'm jumping off the walls for this movie's release, but it should be greatly entertaining at the least.

I think it's very clear that he lacks the reading comprehension for that. He's done that at least four times in the last two days but never seems to realize it, ahha.

Please don't ruin yet 'another' thread by giving Ponuh the attention he does not deserve.

I, for one, am stoked for this movie! To be honest, I never took an interest in LOTR untill after the first movie came out. After seeing each movie I read the book, most people do it the other way around, but I think it helps me understand the story better. That being said, I have yet to read The Hobbit, though I have started numerous times.

Don't fag up the Hobbit thread you motherfuckers.

I originally read the Hobbit ten or eleven years ago. My seventh grade english class had a free reading assignment, I grabbed a random book and asked a friend what it was about:
"Dragons and elves and stuff"

So I read it fervently over the course of a few detentions and I was hooked.

I was chitting and chatting with my history teacher sometime that week and mentioned it, he said, "You know, there's a whole trilogy that comes after that. Lord of the Rings. It's great." So he loaned me the books and that was that. I own a matching paperback set and a single-volume, red leatherbound LotR now, along with matching paperback Hobbit and Silmarillion and The Annotated Hobbit. I bought the Children of Hurin earlier this year, and it was great.

I love this shit.
