Post subject:  The newest addition to our family!
Just got an Avicularia versicolor yesterday. Sadly it's missing two legs, but they should grow back within a molt or two. I <3 this little thing.

This is my first one, but I can feel the seedlings of addiction forming.

i'm one of the many who are absolutely terrified of spiders haha. tarantulas just make me squirm. but i have to admit, it does look pretty awesome

Pretty cool, even though I usually smash spiders as soon as I see them. Knowing that is poisonous, handling it would bother me somewhat.

i wouldn't be able to handle having one of those as a pet. I think its hot that you like them though, you don't see too many girls who want to nurture an 8 legged... thing. SO whats it eat?

But I have to give them to it dead since it's running on 6 legs. I can't bring myself to decapitate them so I put them in the freezer for a few minutes. He doesn't seem to interested in them though, which may be because they're dead. If he doesn't eat within the week I'm going to have to squeeze a cricket head off so the body will be twitchy. Some spiders just won't eat anything already dead.

This species is pretty docile, and the venom isn't really potent. If it bit you you'd would swell less than a beesting, but it is pretty rare for this species to bite at all... they will shoot poop at you instead of biting. But even that is a rare thing from them, as they are one of the 'friendliest' tarantulas - it's one of the best for handling. They hardly ever throw threat displays.

I'm pretty excited about the whole thing. I'm already looking for my second. I'm going to go with another pretty mellow one, I think. I'm not ready for the super-fast, super-venomous mouse-devourers yet. Maybe towards the end of the year I'll get one of those.

I don't really mind spiders soley because I know they eat insects (( I despise insects with a passion )). But I don't think I'd go so far as to ever touch one or buy one as a pet, lol. I would always just fear that it would escape and I couldn't find it, and I'd be paranoid while sleeping lol, I don't like the furryness of tarrantulas either, only spider I really like are those black window ones, because they are pretty to look at, though for obvious reasons I wouldn't want one of them for a pet either haha
