I've just about got my associates degree (in general studies. >.>) and I'm starting to search for a school to transfer to.. Biggest problem is.. I have no idea where I want to go or really what I want to go for. I'm rather particular for English (most of my classes are rather oriented towards that area) but I really enjoy History as well.. my grades aren't exactly stellar either (not really because of FFXI, mostly the past few years alot of people I know have died and because of my gay colleges attendance policy, even if you have an excuse and you miss 2+ classes, they give you an F).. I have like, two big fat Fs on my transcript at the moment. One's in Calc and the other is Physics of Meteorology (x.x).

I'm just wondering what my options are.. without being told by some nazi guidance conselor that "You're a fuckup" or something of the sort. Should I bother applying to the big schools like NYU and Columbia with a B-ish average? I'm in the honors program in my college now (not like that matters much), and they really aren't any help when I ask them.. so I figured maybe some of the older people who post here could shoot out some advice. :/

Those F's probably won't be a big pain if your average is a 3.0 as you say. I think most colleges would accept you but may place you on academic probabtion immediately. That basically means you have to keep an average above a specified floor and failure to do so means you will probably be expelled. You will also probably have to do more loans and grants instead of scholarships. But with a 3.0, you should not have a problem getting into non Ivy league or highly(nationally known) notable schools.

I'm retaking one of the courses I failed right now, so hopefully my GPA will raise after this semester. I only failed it because my aunt died and had to go to the wakes and funeral. :/

My condolances. I am sure that you won't have any trouble getting in. Just keep your head up, the system sucks and can be a royal pain in the ass but in the end its worth it.

Ya. My biggest fear in life is being trapped into something I can't escape. I guess I already am, with the whole college system thing.. but. lol I have that Queen song "I want to break free" stuck in my head now. Great.

Lol. Its kind of being stuck in the collegate system, but only in a sense. At least with an education you are empowering yourself along the way, instead of possible stagnation.

Really, I'm happiest when I'm in a really good class or studying a good work. I hate not reading and not making progress. If I could, I'd be a student forever. lol

I thought about becoming a "career student" at one time but it just didn't pay Of course, you can be a student outside of college but its a completely different experience. I perfer the traditional classroom myself.

If you like history and English, I think maybe you can look into communication field. I know several people do fairly well with a degree in communication.

As for school wise, I don't know how's your financial support going to be so I can't tell you where you should go. If I were you, I'd look up some reports and decide on the field you want to try first then decide on the school.

Really, if I wanted to go to an expensive school, I'd go. Loans and such are available, and my parents are really nice enough in sponsoring me in going through this. Everything is just so enormously open-ended. I may check the university Yarr suggested, just because it might be nice to live outside the country for real. Haha.

Yeah it was a great experience for me to attend college in the US. However, it was a big adjustment for me to make as well. But it probably won't be too bad from US to Canada since you guys are basically the same :P

Haha, ya. There was always a chinese kid who would move into our school who could barely speak the language. I always ended up being their friend and not knowing what he was saying. Haha. That dude got deported though. :/ Don't even know the details. It was back when Hong Kong was still under British control, I think.

i went to community college (liked it) and then University of Texas at Austin (hated it with a passion). i quit college once i got my 2-year degree and started working. i saved up $16,000 and then quit. i realized i very much want to go back to school. it's different now that it's my own personal choice, whereas before i was just kinda going through the set path of the system. i took 6 months off from school/work to visit family and to decide how i will get back into school.

after reviewing about 50 schools across North America, I decided my top choice was university of victoria in B.C. Canada. i got accepted and i'm starting in 2 months.

I have a 1400 SAT / 30 ACT (took it in 10th, didnt have algebra yet) and a 3.78 GPA. After careful consideration, I decided not to apply to the top tier of schools, yet, but I think I will try after I get my bachelor's degree. I don't know what your SAT/ACT scores were, or if you are going for a Master's or Doctorate, but I guess I would suggest:

-first you must decide what your major is
-decide where, geographically, you are willing live to study, even if it's several places
-next, look up every single school in those areas to see which have degree options in the major you choose
-then look at the tuitions of those schools because even if you do get a loan, you'll still have to pay it off
-look at statistics about what percentage of applicants are accepted. if you want to risk applying to a school that accepts 9% of applicants in exchange for having a program that only accepts the best, go for that. but if you see a school that accepts 51% of applicants, you know you have a better chance of not wasting your application fee and time.
-lastly, check out what classes are offered in your area of study. this criteria knocked out quite a few schools for me because i will pick a school that offers 65 classes in English over a school that offers 10. not only is it more convenient to have the choices, but you also know the school is putting more emphasis on English, or whatever you choose to study

i would say choose three schools to apply to, and apply early!
all in all the most important thing is how much you learn, not how well the school's name sounds

Arizona State University. it's a blast down here, and it's a great school. Lots of offer, and you don't need to be a stellar student. And hey. it's sunny at 80 degrees here today, big suprise! it's always sunny here, there's always something to do.

And then you can join the ultimate frisbee team and come play IRL. The school team need more players anyways, but the league is full.

ASU for teh win!

Doctor meets these requirements, they need a ton of schooling, and must always keep up with the latest changes.
