I'm so cool I am spending all Friday, most of Saturday, and all Sunday doing homework. I'm working on a political science essay, and since a lot of people on here seem to know a bit about politics, I thought I'd post my topic so people could feel free to post some thoughts and suggestions. Although it's Canadian politics, the question is also relevent to U.S politics.

Here it is:

"Have the courts gone 'too far' in their interpretation of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms? For some commentators, the judiciary has merely deepened the 'liberal' dimension of our liberal democracy by strengthening our commitment to protecting minorities against the whims of the majority. For others, the courts have eroded the 'democratic' in liberal democracy by granting unwarrented privileges to special interests or by systematically undermining the will of elected legislatures. Develop an arguement about this question, providing concrete evidence to support your position."

Let me ask to clarify:

Are you writing to explain whether or not the government is protecting the minorities *too much* at the lost of the issues that the majorities voted their officials on(As in, majority votes a conservative, and the courts undermine him and pass more social programs, etc.)?

No, its more about judicial review/judicial activism. Whether or not the Supreme Court is giving too many rights to minorities against the wished of the majority.

lol. I just finished government class at my hs, and i cant tell you how many times i've heard those terms....

Also, my bro spent all of friday and saturday studying for his college exams so i wouldnt feel so uncool if i were you. I'm sure that anyone who is a serious student studies occasionally on friday. Sorry i cant help with the prompt as i havent read it yet lol. After reading that prompt i'd have to say yes and no lol. I'd say that the minortiy needs all the help they can get, but not to the extent that it enfringes on the rights of the majorities as well. We need judicial activism because our constitution is open to interpretation, and therefore the interpretation changes over time. Our Constitution is living and therefore changing.
