why can merry christmas be rephrased as "merry xmas?" where did this xmas come from? |

It came from people who celebrate the holiday, but dont want it to be offensive to non-christian religions, thus they refer to it as X-Mas, leaving out the "Christ" half of the holiday name...kinda stupid if you ask me, I hate Politically Correct crap. |

No, in Hebrew there's a symbol that refers to "Christ" and it looks like an x which is why they use xmas. |

i always thought it was, X looks like a Cross, Christ died on a Cross, therefore X can substitute Christ in the word Christmas. |
