this is very very very very very BAD for where I live.
a direct hit would mean it would take atleast a year to just get the water out. everything would be completely destroyed and new orleans would be the new atlantis.

just the surge alone will put us underwater. It would be one big, horrible toxic lake.

I'm really scared right now, and I want to leave. but my kind and generous family have already left (without telling us until they were gone). leaving me and my mom to worry about the care of our grandfather- who we take care of at home for personal reasons. and we have six cats. I have no idea what we are doing or how we are going to go. My car is really small and can't hold a mom, a grandpa, and six cats.
however, my kind and generous family has left us 3 lifejackets. so i'm a fairly certain we wont drown right away.

this is really bad. really bad. and I might not be online for a very long time. this is the storm that everyone down here has been holding their breath for.
If I was religious, I would ask for prayers. but I'm not, so please hope that everything will be ok.

seeya when I see you

<3 Mintsy

PS- Florida, where was your hurricane vacuum on this one?

Reply from Florida - we tried to suck this one over, but Katrina's a raging alcoholic...

Seriously, I know first-hand how horrific hurricane damage can be. I'm not sure what you can do about your situation, but I sincerely hope you guys end up okay. Best of luck, and stay safe, Mintsy.

All I can say is get the f out of the way of this one. I experienced a direct hit from it in miami as a category one and we recorded wind gusts over 100 mph. It was no joke when it went over us. A lot of damage I can't even begin to imagine what will happen now. I wish anyone from there the best.

I also live outside New Orleans and left Sunday morning. Took 12.5 to reach Texas when it normally takes 5 hours. I cant use my cellphone since all lines are either busy or down. From what Ive been able to see on internet..power will be out for maybe a month in some areas. Lazy...check NOLA.com...some info there regarding damage. CNN not really saying much with regards to the outskirts of New Orleans. The Governor did say NOT to come back to Town. I just hope my house is okay....sigh. :(

Jefferson Parish is underwater for the most part, I'm here in Dallas with 25 members of my family. Some of them had some neighbors that stayed in the shelters in town. They showed some pictures of the Cleary Mall. its underwater. St. Bernard, Chalmette, and the 9th Ward are all kinds of messed up. Downtown NO actually isn't too bad off. They got more wind damage there than flooding. Kennet and Metairie are both in bad shape, that's where all my extended family is from. The Northshore areas aren't too bad. Ponchatoula, Hammond has some wind damage. My house has a fence down, some siding work needs to be redone, and some tree damage but nothing major.

The worst of it was in St. Bernard Parish, Biloxi, MS, and Gulfport,MS. There were reports of 100's of ppl in St. Bernard on their roofs waiting to be rescued because the flood waters were past their highest story. Also reports of bodies floating in the flood waters in Chalmete as well. The Industrial Canal levee near Holy Cross High School in Metairie was breeched so that whole area is underwater. The levee on the east side of New Orleans from Lake Ponchatrain overflowed, it didn't actually break, but the surge pushed the water over and into NO. Luckily the Mississippi River levee didn't fail so NO lucked out from the west side.

For now no one is allowed into Jefferson Parish until Friday at the earliest. People will be arrested if they try to reenter. Looting was pretty bad in Jefferson and east side of Orleans Parish also. Like someone else said, it could be upwards of a month until power is restored to NO and St. Bernard.

I took me 11 hours to go from Ponchatoula, LA to Dallas, TX. Its normally about an 8hr drive. Honestly the traffic was better than I expected, the contra-flow plan worked very well on the I-55 heading north to Jackson,MS. Glad to see those that I know from FFXI made it out ok, hope all of your families are safe as well.
