Post subject: | Update of my trip home after Hurricane Katrina |
Iam posting this on this website due to all LSs have members that were affected by the Hurricane along with most check this forum. Lets begin...I left Texas Tuesday night at 1100pm CST to hopefully be "in front of the line" when 0630am comes to enter my town(Metairie). About 0530am and 30 miles from my city, I got rerouted off of Interstate 10 by police onto Airline Highway since this was the only route into Metairie and Kenner(Towns on the outskirts of New Orleans). War zone is the best word I can describe regarding what I saw. DAMAGE EVERYWHERE...houses and businesses damaged or destroyed.I went to my house and saw some piece of a wall blocking my door to my house. There was trash everywhere..power lines down...telephone poles themselves...you name it. I walked in after moving the wall blocking my door and found dirt and mold everywhere. I have a 2 story house and everything on the first floor along with my garage was wiped out. Wooden floors curling up..mold on my furniture and walls. First job now was to get anything of value that belonged to my father(since he lived with me) and me and bring it to my sisters house in Mandeville. I had to make 4 trips to my sisters and each trip took upto 4 hours due to distance to her house and traffic trying to get back into the city. We had a 600pm curfew each night so I needed to get as much stuff out as possible. My next door neighbor stayed thru the Hurricane so I met with them to see how they were doing. They got flooded also and lost alot. They had a generator to cool their refridge along with some food (MRE's) and water that a Army guy gave them since he was in the area helping his girlfriend out. Iam not gonna lie...those MRE's are good man!! I brought some food and water to last me till I head back to Texas but I ate some MRE's instead since they had alot to last for months..lol. Lets begin with some drama. I talked to my neighbors when I first got there and they told me that a couple living across the street were breaking into houses and businesses and were stealing shit. Since no active patrols were in my area...they were getting alot of stuff. My neighbors had a few weapons avail so I asked for a gun just in case I saw any signs of looting by my house or anyone trying to break into my truck. I was shooting first, asking questions later. With a 600pm curfew..it got dark around 745pm so basically...time to enter the house for the night. No power...low water pressure, cold showers, mold on the walls and bugs flying in the house made it a restless night each of the 3 nights I stayed. I had a flashlight to see but it just made me see what I lost from the Hurricane. At night time the only things you heard was helicopters flying above or other people's generators. Friday morning my neighbors told me that one of them heard the people across the street last night making alot of noise. They were drunk and was starting to talk about trying to overtake my neighbors since they had a generator, food and water. Keep in mind that..these people during the day talk to you and try to be normal like your friend. Anyway..my neighbors son and myself said we have to be prepared for anything. We began by reinforcing there outer gate leading to their house...along with getting 5 more guns they had inside...and got them locked and loaded. If any attempt to enter their gate was to occur by anyone...they would know about it easily and can pick them off. After we were done Friday...we all headed to the hospital to get Hepatitus A and B shots along with a Tetanus shot just in case. That took 3 hours of waiting to be processed btw. Each night after I was told about the couple across the street..I slept with a gun. Very hard to imagine that this shit was happening. Nothing happened Friday night thank goodness. Well...I was leaving Saturday to head back to Texas so I gave them back their gun Sat morning. They were confident that they would be okay..if anything..that couple across the street had numbered days. God Bless them and I hope they will make it but they left me a message at the house Iam staying in Texas saying power maybe restored Sat night or Sunday. Its unbelievable what this Hurricane has caused. I lost 70% of my house and garage and theres alot of people that lost everything. The main purpose of this post is to give you some insight of my time back in my town but to mainly.....TO REMIND ALL OF YOU..of what you have...your family or loved ones by your side and anything that has some meaning to you. Cherish what you have and dont forget what you have because at anytime..it can be taken away from you. Please pray and wish everyone that was and is still being affected by us luck. This is a long road..and I hope we all can recover to having a normal life again. Take Care yall. Your Friend, Grimfandango Valour |
