Post subject:  An Interesting Fact

I was making a soup today and thought I'd seek the answer to this famous question:

Why do onions make us cry?

Quote:
It is not the strong odor of the onion that makes us cry, but the gas that the onion releases when we sever this member of the lily family.

The onion itself contains oil, which contains sulfur, an irritant to both our noses and to our eyes. Cutting an onion arouses a gas contained within the onion, propanethiol S-oxide, which then couples with the enzymes in the onion to emit a passive sulfur compound. When this upwardly mobile gas encounters the water produced by the tear ducts in our eyelids, it produces sulfuric acid.

In response to the caustic acid, our eyes automatically blink, and produce tears which irrigate the eye, and which flush out the sulfuric acid.

Another reflex to rid the eyes of a foreign substance, that of rubbing our eyes with our hands, often exacerbates the situation, because our hands are coated with the caustic, sulfuric acid producing oil from cutting the onion, which we then rub directly into our eyes.

Much to our chagrin, the only remedy for ridding the onion of its pungent, irritating oil is to boil it, not to slice it or dice it.

At work, the one guy was cutting onions so I went to the mall customer service and got gum since that stops the tears (go find the other thread) and the other guy asked me how I knew so I started explaining and then it hit me... don't talk if you're chewing gum and cutting onions lol

i find that so interesting...
i love chemistry and biology facts
especially when they deal with onions.
but you should never cut an onion, you never know when it might be someone's hair

I thought if you breathed through your mouth while cutting onions it would negate the gas?
At least, I've yet to cry while cutting an onion...

doesnt negate the sulfer in the air making contact with your tear ducts on the side of your eyes.

I don't often find myself cutting onions, but when I do i leave my tongue hanging out of my mouth and the "passive sulfur compound" reacts with the water on my tongue instead to produce the acid which then gets neutralized by my saliva. Then I spit on the onion because I don't like them.

what does it mean if i dont have a reaction to onions what so ever, the only thing is if i rub my finger on one and then touch my eye, it burns, but then again if i touch my eye period it burns.
