Quote:
Dear AOL Member,

I want to let you know about some exciting changes happening at AOL. Our service has always provided both a way to connect to the Web and an entertaining online destination once you're connected.

Today we are announcing that AOL's software, email, and many compelling AOL features -- including your Address Book, Screen Name, the Buddy List® feature and more -- will be free to everyone with an Internet connection.

What Does This Mean for You?

Nothing about your service arrangement with us will change unless you want it to. Your current plan, which includes 24/7 customer support, unlimited email storage, your email addresses and all the AOL content and services you rely on, will still be there for you.

Even if you choose a different high-speed provider from the one you use to connect to the Internet today:

* You can keep your AOL Screen Name and email address for as long as you want to use it, completely free;
* You can continue to use your AOL software, and you can still get all your favorite features and content, completely free;
* You will still get the most comprehensive free set of safety and security tools available, plus world-class, high-speed content like video, music and more.

All of this is free, no matter who provides your Internet connection.

Why Is AOL Doing This?

We're simply changing with the times. There are many options for Internet access, whether it's dial-up or broadband. At the same time, a lot of online content and services are now available on the Web free of charge because they are supported by advertising. So, while your Internet connectivity needs may change over time, what you love about the Web does not. We are now able to ensure that the familiar AOL experience, your Screen Name, your Address Book, your Buddy List, your Favorite Places, and other content and features you enjoy, will always be available to you for free.

In September, you will be hearing about more changes and other new features at AOL. Until then, you can visit AOL Keyword: New AOL for more information and to sign up for informative email alerts.

Sincerely,

Jon Miller
Chairman and CEO
AOL LLC

So this means no more me calling them crying to try desperately to get rid of aol.
The company last quater lost 976,000 members. Almost 1 mil lol. You can tell they were getting desperate to keep their customers. WIth all the previous threads made here about them. They're basically giving the service out for free now. They figured they can make the difference by being ad supported.

I only used aol for about 2 months way back when, but this feels like a victory.

My dad uses it too and I just sigh when I have to use his computer to go on the web. Maybe he'll switch to a faster isp now. Unless this is just a USA thing. Why is there no EOL or BOL?

Im amazed people still use AOL. I assume its all the uneducated (no offence to your dad mandos lol) retarded users out there who dont know any better. That or the over protective parents who want to lock down their computer.

This program is a relic of internets past. I remember way back when these portals programs were huge. Compuserv, AOL, MSN and more were the only way people would browse the internet.

My family first signed up with Micrsofts original MSN network. This was back before hotmail and msn mail. We signed up with MSN because my area had no local ISPs.

THANKS FOR INCLUDING ME IN THE NO OFFENSE SECTION YARR.

Besides that.. I found it very difficult to leave it because i have over 400 people on my buddy list. Its a huge list i don't want to go over to pass unto another email address. I only really used aol for a year. Then i started using higher speed options

my only experience with AOL was like 1994
we used the internet and got a bill for like $750, and called them and they were like "it's $3.95/minute"
so we stopped using them haha

lol wow, didn't expect this. I mean it was obvious to anyone who knows ANYTHING about computers/internet, even if they didn't know about the company's annual losses, that AOL software was just a large gimmick compared to better things out there. I didn't expect them to make it "free" haha, but I also did not think they could keep fooling the same 40 year old virgin cubicle rats that 20 bucks a month for email and lost cpu resources was worth it.
