By staff writers September 04, 2006 02:14pm Article from: NEWS.com.au Font size: + - Send this article: Print Email THE Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, is dead. He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said today. It is understood he was killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest. He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary when the tragedy occured. Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality this morning at Batt Reef off Port Douglas. Irwin's body is being flown to Cairns. It is believed his American-born wife Terri is trekking on Cradle Mountain in Tasmania and is yet to be told of her husband's death. Irwin - known worldwide as the Crocodile Hunter - is famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchcry "Crikey!". The father of two's Crocodile Hunter program was first broadcast in 1992 and has been shown around the world on cable network Discovery. He has also starred in movies and has developed the Australia Zoo wildlife park, north of Brisbane, which was started by his parents Bob and Lyn Irwin. Tributes have already started pouring in for the larger-than-life character. Foreign Minister Alexander Downer, who used a photograph of his family at Australia Zoo for his official Christmas card last year, hailed Mr Irwin for his work in promoting Australia. Irwin was heavily involved in last year's "G'Day LA" campaign. "The minister knew him, was fond of him and was very, very appreciative of all the work he'd done to promote Australia overseas," a spokesman said. A Tourism Queensland spokeswoman said the death was shocking and paid tribute to Irwin's "enormous contribution" to his adopted state. Louise Yates said it was impossible to quantify how much Mr Irwin had meant to the Queensland tourism industry. "I don't think we could even estimate how much he brought us through his personality and his profile and his enthusiasm about Queensland," she said. "It would be difficult to estimate how much he was worth. And it would be difficult to underestimate." She said Irwin had been a larger-than-life ambassador. "It's not just what he brought but what he took with him when he travelled, his passion." Australia Zoo, on southeast Queensland's Sunshine Coast, employs more than 500 people and attracts thousands of visitors every day. But Ms Yates said it would be "unfair and unjust" to put a dollar value on Irwin's worth to the state, because of how much he had given. Not to derail possible response to Steve's death, which is sad, but did anyone notice how fast this news spread? I was refreshing /b/ (DON'T YOU JUDGE ME) and saw Steve's portrait (like many, many others from time before) with the birth/death year, but this time a legitimate link was attached. I followed google news and found this story which literally appeared after I refreshed the google news page. Before this development Wikipedia's article on Irwin was locked and there's already been a ton of pages created about Irwin on YTMND. Steve Irwin's wife doesn't even know, at this moment, that hes dead yet. Steve's body is still airborne at this moment on his way back to mainland austrailia... christ what a world we live in... Anyway this is sort of depressing, I remember watching some of his shows when I was sick or sometimes over summer in between school years. And what a way to die... I thought I'd end up blaming this guys death on a stupid mistake, but a fucking stingray is truly a freak way to die. |

i don't really have words for this ![]() Christ, sometimes I just wish I give you a hug. Not in the "I want your babies" deal, but just in that "everythings going to be ok" sense not that you'd want or need any consolation from me. |

He was a good natured person and he provided hours of entertainment, but you can only fool with nature so much. I kind of thought it would be a snake that would get him or something poisonous so it is really no surprise. I think a lot of people saw this coming. Depressing though, because I think his love of "mother nature" really unlocked the kid in all of us. I mourn the loss, who knows what he would have given us in the future with all his wildlife and knowledgeable contributions. ![]() |

A fucking stingray. My brother is going to be very very upset about this, he loved all his shows and did some really great impressions of him. Same day he is getting thrown out of college for being a lazy ass. As for why this news has spread so fast I think its to do with how Steve built up an almost aura of invincibilty around him, and to learn that he has died is as big a shock as it would be to learn the moon was built by ancient Chinese scientists.. |

Are you guys sure a "Stingray barb" is an actual stingray? I was under the impression it was some stringray hunting tool or something. edit: Nevermind ![]() |

Theres very few people in Television who seem like genuinely nice. Steve Irwin was one of those people in my opinion. He use to go on Conan o'brien and do some pretty stupid and funny stuff. This really sucks, I really thought he was an great guy. |

Quote: The ebullient environmentalist, one of Australia's best known exports, was killed when he was lashed in the chest by a stingray's poison barb while filming underwater on the Great Barrier Reef on Monday.
He seemed like a nice guy, but I dunno, when you routinely taunt the world's most dangerous wild animals, you're kinda asking for it eventually. RIP, you lovable fool. |

Yeah it sucks, but I can't say I was surprised. I think some people actually had bets on what kind of wildlife would kill him eventually. His show was really enjoyable and hilarious in some cases. |
