I'm leaning towards starting out in Gridania, although open beta will decide that for me. However, I also may just decide to start out wherever Yarr starts out. Since some of us want to start out in different cities, should we have different CKD linkshells for each town until we can all meet up together?

I'm going to start as Alchemist for the spectacles, gonna do one or two levequests for gil for weapons. Gonna take pugilist to 6 for second wind, lancer to 10 for speed surge {edit: can't use speed surge on non-lancer class}, and marauder to 6 for bloodbath, conjurer to 8 for shock spikes, and main will be thaumaturge. Alternating between jobs to avoid fatigue.

Haven't decided yet which crafting job to main.

Depends how easy it is to get between towns. You could get between Sandy/Bastok/Windy easily once you were about level 10-15, as long as you had some spare time to kill. You basically give one person from another region a pearl, promote him temporarily, and get him to run around pearling everyone else when he goes back.

That said, it seems most people are going Gridania.

Ul'dah's city seems ok, but the outside area looks like a mix between Gustaberg and Meriphataud Mountains, two of the most dreary places in FFXI. And everybody who was in beta (or just looks at all the screenshots) is sick of Limsa Lominsa by now.

I'm guessing Uldah will be less populated due to dreariness. that could be good or bad. and it looked more wide-open, which is good for auto-run.

Gridania for sure. Probably goes along with playing a night Mithra anyway.

There seem to be plenty of ways to create a customized Paladin type. Cure is level 4 CNJ. THM and CNJ also get lv10 weapon skills that restore MP by damage dealt. Defender is Lv10 MRD, PUG gets its own form of provoke to stack with GLD's, along with chakra. THM also gets damage spikes and MP absorbing spikes at higher levels. So on and so forth, though I'm sure there's some pertinent gameplay information I don't have that turns these ideas into gobbledeegook.

In which case I'd just play Lancer and destroy everything.

Right now it's really difficult to tank things because Enmity is all over the place.

When you fight a group of mobs they're all over the place. Cures for 0 HP will pull hate off tanks. I provoked something chasing Kayne the other day, and it completely ignored me, went back to it's old spot, still claimed but didn't care that I'd provoked it. I have "Heavy Slash" which is a standard attack you can spam that supposedly increases enmity per swing but it didnt seem to help at all.

Nothing stops you equipping abilities from all the different jobs like that but they all tend to have a penalty for being subbed due to "affinity" (which you can improve with Guildmarks). Like Cure is no longer AoE when subbed, and the recast timers for a lot of stuff gets increased by 50% and potency decreased by 50%.

Guys, If I have to spend the first week of my game running around giving out linkpearls, no problem. Whisp, Im ok starting where you want. I dont want to do LL in open beta, its seriously a sight for me sore eyes.

Im more interested in figuring out what we are going to do with the Linkshell\Company thing.

I just recently read that a Company and a Linkshell are not the same. Companies are not in the game yet, but the idea is that companies are suppose to be like a classic MMO Guild. Whereas linkshells work the same as FFXI. Except now the original concept works even better. Linkshells are like chat rooms. At least it will be cool if you can talk in a linkshell and a guild. Lots of MMO games have chatrooms you can make. Nothing has been said if you can be in a linkshell and a company, but i personally assume you can be in both.

Going into the beta I really had no desire to create a new CKD, but after the last few weeks... Im ready to do this again. I have no problem playing the same role I did in FFXI. I just think we need to figure out if we want to do a company or a linkshell, hell maybe we should just wait for more information.

I really want to keep focus away from whos in what linkshell\guild\company. I just want the first months of leveling to be about having fun and discovering new things.

One of the problems on the social side of FFXI is that you kind of needed to be sitting in your "HNM LS" all of the time because of events cropping up and HNMs popping and things like that. People had social LS with IRL friends or lowbie friends in them and things like that, but actually using those LSes was frowned upon because it would seem like you're skipping out on events and the like.

I'm hoping that you can be in a Company and a Linkshell at the same time in two different chat channels. Then you can be a member of one "guild" that you're always in contact with, and then use linkshells to talk to all your other buddies.

No idea if it's still there but i remember in the WoW beta you could create custom chat channels and be in several chat channels at once. So you could just create custom chat channels for your old gaming buddies or IRL friends while still being in your guild chat and stuff like that. Hoping the same thing happens here.

I recall an old interview saying a company has additional bonuses like shared storage and the guild itself could level up and stuff.

Ditto, except for the mithra part. I hope there's a body of water we can sit by while splitting flax flower, and bitch about things like old men.

Those are the only circumstances under which I'd make linen again. haha

Aesthetically speaking, I'd love to start in Gridania, because I believe it will be the prettiest of the starting zones. That being said, Uldah very well may be quite empty and allow for easier quick boosting of levels (As long as Fatigue isn't too much of an issue. lololol)

I took the Companies as being like the HNMLS groups, and Linkshells to act more like the smaller Social LSs. That being said, there's no real reason to form a company if we can do the majority of stuff ourselves. Though may be it would be good for combining groups together, if Murph's team does end up forming their own LS and such.

And I'm all for Yarr being the leader again. I would like to finalize out some of that stuff, if anything, because I need to start assigning admin levels to various people for the guild website. I got a bunch of back-end programming down for the calendar event/scheduling system today. So I hope to be able to post events for open beta, collector's launch, standard launch, etc.

If we can tolerate it, I think we should try to have as many start off in the same town as possible. Especially if we can change allegiances later on, which I assume we would be able to.

Speaking of possible crowding, anybody else get the feeling that "Sephiroth" server will be overrun? I just picture a mass influx of everybody who ever named themselves "Darksepphirrothxxcloud" or something in FFXI.

I've already seen way too many Sephiroth's on the Sephiroth server, lol. And this is before the game is even out to the general public.

I've seen like, Sephiroth Vii, Sephiroth Jenova, Safer Sephiroth...

I plan to start in Gridania, too. I might start as an alchemist, too. I don't know what I'm going to level except for archer. Gonna try to stay away from healing though =O haha

that's reason enough to select a different server.

I'm not sure what they are going to do with Companies. Currently you can hold multiple link pearls and you can see all of their chat at the same time.

Which is why there is a [1] next to it. If you equip multiple pearls it becomes [2] [3] etc, not sure of the limit.

Searching shows that these are the available servers:

Shadowlord
Garland
Emperor
Golbez
Exdeath
Kefka
Sephiroth
Ultimecia
Jecht
Gabranth

Players can confirm. I would imagine that with time they'd add more.

I have to admit my leveling plan is pretty much the same as Whisp's, though as I mentioned in the other thread I'll be doing goldsmithing.

How many of you will be part of the head start? I'm still undecided about CE vs Standard.

Oh wow, so that explains the [1] thing, you can be in multiple social LS at once (and then one company, assumedly).

But how do you set which linkshell to chat into, lol. I can see a new wave of mistells as people write their pseudo-gay-love remarks into CKD chat and it ending up in the linkshell with all their IRL buddies in it.

These are the servers available to FFXIV's beta right now, yeah. But, I was under the impression that FFXI's beta servers didn't exist in the retail version? Or were all renamed or something, anyway.

Didn't FFXI only have one beta server: Cactuar?

You might be thinking of the NA Beta. Don't forget the NA beta was basically just an english version of a game that had already been completed for a year before. The JP had a proper beta a year prior to that, which would have been an actual beta and probably had more servers and stuff.

Wasn't in either so not 100% sure though.

I'll be doing the head-start. It will be nice to be out in front of the masses as much as possible to avoid competition.

On the beta site it says that if you want to keep your beta character name, you have to create your retail character on the same server (where the name will be reserved if you want it)

This means that the server names between beta and retail will most likely be the same.

Time to pick a server?

Image
(-Kuja -CloudOfDarkness +Gabranth +Shadowlord)

Sephiroth and, sadly, Kefka, are probably going to be the overpopulated "retard" servers. The underdog servers will probably be Golbez, Exdeath, and maybe Garland.

Anyone here actually play Dissidia? It was awesome. Jecht ftw.
