Once a GLD (or THM, they can equip shields too) equips a shield, you instantly get the Lv.1 Shield "Guard" ability. It reduces damage by 50% or so (with a near 100% block rate) but only while the shield is raised. Also allows you to use Phalanx (high damage, very low stamina counter, but only works after a block -- paired with the near 100% block rate this is awesome). Guard wears off after about 15-20 seconds but can be instantly reused again. You can still attack and use all abilities normally while guard is up, there's no penalty to it's use other than it's initial stamina cost. Anyway, Shield is also a job in itself and levels up separately to your actual job, so after killing a monster it'll say something like: You got 982 experience points. (Physical level) You got 324 sword skill points. (Sword level) You got 83 shield skill points. (Shield level) Eventually you'll get: Rank up! Your shield level is now 2! Unfortunately shield seems to level much slower than your actual job, and there's no way to see what it's experience bar looks like anywhere. But once you get Shield level to 10 (At which point you're likely to be about level 20-30 GLD) you get new abilities as listed above. Originally, in Alpha, when equipping an "off-hand weapon" (like a Shield) you actually got a second stamina bar, and any off-hand abilities (like the shield) would drain from your second stamina bar instead of your main one. I think this got scrapped when the battle system was revamped though. |

I thought about that, but in the end I figured "not really", because death is nothing more than a very slight inconvenience right now. When you die, you lose no exp, suffer no durability penalty, and dont fail any active guildleve, even if you're solo. All you do is revive at the nearest crystal and run back to where you were, which takes 2-3 minutes at most, by which time your raise sickness will have pretty much worn off. |

I think that is in seconds. 10 second cast, 1 minute cooldown. Pretty close to ff11. The 5 minute duration reraise will be more worrisome lol. At least if other buff durations are any indication. Edit: you guys were referring to level, nevermind! Still worried about reraise duration, though! |

Edit: you guys were referring to level, nevermind! Still worried about reraise duration, though! Yeah the short duration reraise is iffy. Should have been called "Last Rites" and had an instant cast, just throw it at a guy who's about to drop. haha |
