Well, I've been getting bored of WoW with Cataclysm... And thought it might be nice to reconnect with the folks from my original MMO addiction. Is there a recruit a friend or free trial for FF at this point?

Yeah the game is still free, we aren't even paying monthly yet. I will PM you my buddy pass if you want it. I think most everybody else used theirs.

Oh shit nevermind it says you need your friend's game disc for it to work. I guess you would still need a copy of the game somehow.

I haven't even done much research in regards to classes yet. Haha. Once I get in from work I'll get myself set up. How many folks from the original CKD is back? And I guess I'll figure something out. Any digital downloads or anything?

My brother told me that the game was free, but I thought that was only a few months. You guys don't pay any monthly subscription at all?

I'm sure the game is selling pretty cheap nowadays, though. haha.

The game costs money to purchase from a store. Monthly subscriptions are disabled until "The game is good" according to S-E. So basically you're paying for an Open Beta subscription where you get to transfer your char over into "retail" (ps3 release)

and i enjoy the game :)

i'm about as close to DRK as you can get. maxed out marauder and then leveled mage classes for support magic.

that would be awesome if you came to join us! come get rank 50 before they inevitably expand the storyline and NMs

You'd probably have to torrent the game DVD so you have something to install with and then use someone's buddy pass to make an account, I think.

The actual number of old school people "back" varies from month to month. After a very premature launch, right now the game is basically in an "extended beta", it's been free to play since September (6 months so far!) until SE fix the fact the game's kind of lacking in content. After the game was released broken SE fired their entire development team and hired a new one to fix it, and we're only just starting to see the effects of it. SE told us the game would remain free until it doesn't suck. So yeah we're all basically playing an extended beta. If you can deal with that cool.

I didn't really want to list names because I'd probably forget someone but bigger names you might know/remember: Yarr, Kayne, Ketrebu, Corwin, Rydall, Fattino, Ridere, Whisp. And occasionally Mikey logs on about one night every two months.

K, I'm tired of listing people, whatever. go to the "Company Roster" link just below the main site banner and highlight over the different people's names to look at low numbers for the forum ID's. Basically, we have a ton of old players playing, but we'd like to have more.

Classes are a bit wonky right now, since the current set up allows you to mix and match abilities across different classes. But Whisp is right MRD is as close to DRK as we have right now.

You should totally give it a shot. The game is way better than it used to be, but it still has a long way to go.

the classes right now:

Gladiator is the best tank mostly because of shield, high defense, and abilities like sentinel
Marauder is of the high damage per swing variety, good abilities like bloodbath (HP drain), high def, highest HP
Archer is the highest damage dealer, can attack out of mob aoe range, low HP and low def
Lancer gets the highest dmg weapons, lots of TP-based abilities, kind of the samurai of this game, seems to have decent defense but low HP
Pugilist is like a monk with hand-to-hand fighting, high dmg especially versus easy preys, highest evasion, but lower HP and def

Out of conjurer and thaumaturge, they are both very similar although thaumaturge gets the further-reaching casting distance making it great for NMs and also gets better enfeebles. Meanwhile conjurer gets lots of great spells like sleep, protect, shell, stoneskin, etc., making it a great class to level up for subskills.

Yah, the mage jobs are just really messed up. THM has the AoE that should be useful for a healer/buffer. But it doesn't really get the good buffs. CNJ has a more focused AoE, but it makes buffing/healing people a nightmare.

If you want to try and be a DD mage (Kind of impossible to really the way the spells are now), you basically need to level both THM and CNJ up to 50 and then take all the good THM moves and use them while set as CNJ for the focused AoE.

If you want to be a healer/buffer mage, then you still have to level both mage jobs up to 50 and just transfer all the good buff moves onto your THM and enjoy the large cone aoe.

Think of THM aoe like WoW mage conal spells (I forget their names already. lol), but with a far larger range of effect.

Think of CNJ aoe like mage/warlock circular AoE moves (Blizzard) etc. Or that circle of healing spell a priest can cast on a different target.

I've been playing a healing class for the last few years in WoW (shaman) and was going to try to play something close in play style to that, but I can always go tank or something in FF... Since being a strict DD is something I've left behind. But... Who knows! I'm excited to see you guys again.

We currently have a lot of GLA tanks. If you wanted to go healing, keep my post about the two mages thing in mind, but ultimately maybe go to the THM route. We have a handful of 40+ CNJ already, but Only Corwin and I as THM.

On the other hand, MRD does tank stuff, too, and Whisp has expressed his desire to not tank necessarily. And he's working on CNJ. So if you're completely against pure DPS (LNC is primarily dps, but also has some mob debuff/party buff type moves), then I'd suggest either THM or MRD (Tank).

By the way, the buddy pass that comes with the Collector's Edition of FFXIV gives you a full complete account, its not some trial account or limited to 30 days that needs you to buy the game afterwards or something. The buddy pass is basically a second copy of the game you can give away.

So, it seems as if Yarr's buddy code he gave me is invalid for me. I don't know if it's because it's a Canadian region code or something stupid like that, but. I don't really want to go out and buy a copy if I can work this out. Haha. Lame.
