As you know, Japan has been hit with a terrible disaster this week.
We have received and greatly appreciate all the kind words of concern from our fans and players.
As a result of the earthquake, we temporarily may have to shut down the servers hosting FINAL FANTASY XI and FINAL FANTASY XIV.
We are now analyzing the situation and studying very hard what we can do to fulfill our social responsibilities under the unusual circumstances,
and to mitigate the inconvenience to our players.
According to our best estimate at this point, we will temporarily have to shut down the servers shortly.
We will give you as much advance notice as possible under the rapidly changing circumstances.
If the servers are shut down, we will try to provide updates in the Information section of our Official Website."

Servers will be down at least a week and players will not be billed for the April billing cycle. Lodestone, forums, and other official sites will still operate.

A big earthquake occurred in the northern part of Japan at 5:46 (GMT) of March 10th 2011. Because TEPCO's facilities have been seriously damaged, power shortage may occur.
TEPCO appreciates customers' cooperation in reducing electricity usage by avoiding using unnecessary lighting and electrical equipment.
We are taking all measures to restore power, however, we expect extremely challenging situation in power supply for a while. We kindly ask our customers to cooperate with us in reducing usage of power.

I'd rather have FFXI and FFXIV disappear entirely than risk nuclear fallout. I know that shutting down the servers isn't going to make or break that, but I'm just saying.

Plus, I still don't know how you guys can be addicted to FFXIV :P I can barely stay logged in for 30 minutes (with numerous LQs to do) without finding myself bored of doing the same thing every time.

I was going to bitch at Ridere to make sure he didnt sp with out me. I have no problem with a 1 week break, but I say we invade another game for fun.

Yah. one week is a long time to not play a game, so I could see a lot of people ending up playing some new game that still has that new game smell, causing people to not come back to the broken game.

fattino and i had a brief conversation about this early this morning. He made a point that even just a week delay will cause many people to permanently leave the game and be a death stake in it. I dont think it'll be as dramatic as killing the game completely but I agree at the possibility of losing a lot of the player base as an result. Kinda curious what everyone else speculates.

They say only a week down but I'm not sure how much better the power situation will be in only a week's time. Unless SE has some offshore backup somewhere but i doubt it.

The game is stale, and we've been playing it mainly just for the sake of playing it. They're slowly adding content, I guess. But when there's a bunch of new MMO's out there, of which some have just recently launched, I see a lot of people jumping ship.

Will be interesting to see what happens.

Yeah a forced 1-2 week vacation will cause some people to break their addiction to the game and move on. I can definitely see that happening. It sucks because we finally have a decent amount of Ifrit people playing FFXIV together and re-building our linkshell. I hope we don't lose anybody, but I bet we will.

I missed a week of FFXI last month with my net down and lost the feeling for a bit. Had to force myself back into it, really easy to quit.

I'm thinking of trying the new Tactics Ogre remake on PSP, supposed to be really good, i'm not a huge fan of perma-death though.

Ok, so donkey kong and metroid (other M) for Wii have both immediately lost my interest. I wonder if that borderlands looking game is coming out soon. Borderlands fucking rocked.
