1. You Retried or quit or still playing this game?

Retired.

2. Why?

Acting as fill-in leader of CKD was getting too stressful. I was also in the know that certain members were starting to use and develop claiming tools of which I was probably the most staunch advocate against. And finally, real life came calling. There's only so long you can pretend that the world around you isn't changing.

3. Had this game made a big effect of your IRL?

Yes, I was playing everyday for most of the day when I was in college.

4. Did you make any good friends?

I've made alot of friends while playing FFXI, it was really the only good thing about the game. The original CKD was made up of the best players on the server who also happened to be incredibly cool. Not going to comment on what eventually happened. But of all the people I've befriended on FF, Mintsy is the closest friend I've made.

5. Did you enjoy this game?

I enjoyed the community over anything. And being better than everyone else.

6. Any comment about this game?

I don't understand how people from the PC launch are still playing. Haha. I'm amazed they haven't gotten bored yet.

Quit

2. Why?
This game got boring. Learning the truth behind people I trusted left me with no reason to log in. Id rather not play if playing ment all my guilds accomplishment were worthless because they were all known hacks. There was no point running a linkshell whos members couldnt be trusted. I wanted to quit this game back in January of 05, but I felt responsible to keep my leadership roll in CKD. Reinheld and Ilma basically took control of CKD around May\June and I just logged in occationally for Dynamis and to put people back in line. I always said "RL should always take Priority" I just wish my linkshell had been mature enough to take care of itself and not resort to using hacks because I left. Reinheld did a great job and I see no fault in his leadership. I should also say Mikey did a great job taking care of the "people" problems, but the linkshell turned on Mikey too once the hacks started getting out of hand.

3. Had this game made a big effect of your IRL?
Not really. Princess (My ex GF who everyone pretty much should know from the forums) loved to watch movies every day. So I just played while she watched movies or did homework. If I wasnt playing FFXI I would have just been sitting 3 feet to the left on the bed with her. I would honestly say that I never turned down the opportunity to do anything over FFXI. Well I did ignore some friends, but I made up for it after I quit and my friends all love me still haha.

4. Did you make any good friends?
Lots. I only regret meeting Mikey.

5. Did you enjoy this game?
If I had the chance to go back and do it again I would and I wouldnt change a thing. People can blame me for killing CKD, but I never did anything but follow through with the promises I made.

6. Any comment about this game?
People are going to realize what a waste of time this game becomes and how stupid it is to force yourself to play because of a bunch of "online friends".
I realize that the friends you make in this game are important. I just think that people need to realize that the line "I have so many friends who still play and I enjoy the community too much" need to get their priorities checked.
If you cant quit because the social aspect is just too great, well, maybe its time you went out and made some friends outside of the game or re-established the old friends you once had. No one should have to go online into a MMO to feed their social needs. It might not seem like much, but it is.
I a lot of people dont quit because they think the "friends" they made online will fade away. the fact of the matter is that its pretty much true for 90% of the friends you make online. Its not that these friends arnt important or less "real", its that the friendship is based on one thing, FFXI. Take away that aspect and you friendship is probably pretty hollow.

I had an easy time quitting because I knew people like Mikey, Whisp, Reinheld and my other good friends would always keep in touch using the forums or MSN. A big reason I keep these forums online is that I would like to see more people keep in touch through these forums. I still keep in touch with most my DAoC friends through a forum much like this.
I have had mikey come visit Talisin and I in Canada and I plan on one day going down to NYC and hitting the bars with Mikey and Reinheld.

Anyway, rant over. lol. Sorry I just hate when people who dont quit say "I just have too many friends" or "Its the people in this game that make me not want to quit". Although im sure the people reading this now who are like that are probably rationalizing how thats not really them.

1. You Retried or quit or still playing this game?
*** Quit

2. Why?
*** Going to be opening a business early next year with a RL friend of mine that I've known for 15 years. Wanted to start preparing for it and that meant little time for ffxi. Therefore I decided to cut it out of the picture entirely since I wouldn't be playing it anyways when the business opened.

3. Had this game made a big effect of your IRL?
*** Kinda yes, kinda no. Yes, I immersed myself more in FFxi than I should have. No, because I am still able to move on with my life now and continue forward with what matters most.

4. Did you make any good friends?
*** Many. The list would be rather large if I mentioned everyone, but a few that I would really like to give due credit to are: Judai, Kingofthejews, Taera, Elvren, Darklunacy, Kalade, Saiia, Tiothiel (before she quit), Jimbean, and Cail.

5. Did you enjoy this game?
*** Very much. Hands down, the thing I enjoyed the most has to have been leading dynamis though. Nothing made me more proud than the accomplishments of our linkshell- plus seeing people get the gear they worked soooooo hard to obtain. I have always been proud of each and every member and having a group of people that felt the same way about each other made it all the sweeter.
That said I also got enjoyment from the other smaller things like HNM and God fights, but they just can't compare to leading a successful group of people.

6. Any comment about this game?
*** I have enjoyed it thoroughly and I wish I could pass my enjoyment on to everybody else that still plays and/or wishes to play. Play to have fun. Gear should ALWAYS be secondary to friendship. Afterall, what good does it do for you to obtain the most badass gear and have nobody to cheer you on when you finally do earn it. And most importantly, don't cheat. Earn your way through the game legitimately. It's one thing to cheat on some stupid single player game.... But when you cheat in a game that has more than just yourself participating it ruins the experience for everyone else- REGARDLESS of what part of the world you are from.

BTW.... nice post Yarr.

1. You Retried or quit or still playing this game?
Hmm, I guess I'm retired.

2. Why?
Some stupid hurricane came and changed my life.

3. Had this game made a big effect of your IRL?
Yes, of course! I even dyed my hair green at one point! But seriously, I played so much that I start to lose track of who I was.

4. Did you make any good friends?
Ya, I made many friends, I was really only in one guild I guess.. Nephilim, so I got pretty close to all those people. I still talk to a few of them. I never got that close to many of the CKD members, in ways other than 'ha I'm a silly taru who likes mspaint' kinda ways. Rein is probably my BBFF IRL.

5. Did you enjoy this game?
yesh. very much.

6. Any comment about this game?
Probably the best MMO I've ever played, the community is so strong. No other game has even come close.

1. You Retried or quit or still playing this game?
Quit for 6 months and lost my original character, but started again and am still playing.

2. Why?
Quitting was great for me, helped me launch into college without the need to go home and do a CoP run or something, but during christmas break I was real bored and decided to start again and vowed to never let it take over my life like it did before.

3. Had this game made a big effect of your IRL?
I'm sure it has, I'm less available to my friends. I never turn something down when they ask me to do stuff, but those nights when they're not calling me I could be calling them instead of getting 40k experience points in a game.

4. Did you make any good friends?
I think I made much better friends my first time around before I quit. Galstron, Uzumaki, Mancer, Face, Aximilli, Blace, etc. But after joining a second time I joined up with themonarchy and they were the only people I knew since most of my old friends quit. After being, what I felt it was like, turned on by monarchy it really jaded me about the people in this game, and I can't bring myself to take the time to build relationships like I did. It basically came down to the fact that everyone is in this game for themselves and they're also 12 years old. I can only take so many shit and fart jokes before I start getting annoyed.

5. Did you enjoy this game?
It's a great game. It's the only MMO I've played, but it's fun, and SE has definitely milked me for all I'm worth. I wish shit didn't take so long to do, but I think that's what made it last so long. I hear from other people that other MMO's have a terrible endgame. Once you hit level 60 or whatever the game basically stops. Well FFXI doesn't have the most exciting endgame, but at least it has one. One where long-time players still don't have all the shit they want. It's stuff I'll never be able to get, but there's always something to do.

6. Any comment about this game?
Gil has always been a downside to this game for me. There's always so much I want to do but I can never do it.

1. You Retried or quit or still playing this game?

Retired makes it sound like a job so I'll say quit.
2. Why?
I knew coming home from college back to living with family would make it hard to play ffxi like I was used to, and that it would eventually make me angry and so on, so I decided to jack it in and start living again.

3. Had this game made a big effect of your IRL?

Before I logged off for the last time I checked my playtime and saw something like 287 days. Thinking back I can remember about 7 occasions I left ff logged in overnight or something while I wasnt playing so all of that was time I'd spend actively playing. I was disgusted with myself and even now I think what I could have accomplished with that much time, hell I could have been through university all ready, been pregnant for 9 months and had a kid (if i was a woman haha). The only friend from school that I had kept up with was the guy who also happened to play ffxi and I didn't make many other friends at college, I'd rather have gone to sky than go out at night.

4. Did you make any good friends?
Yes definitley. The day I logged off for the last time I was assaulted by people in tells trying to say goodbye, one of the hardest decisions to make then was not to get up from resting that last time in the countdown to 30, but I keep in touch with most of them on forums and msn. Plan to visit a few sometime if I travel to america. The last linkshell that I was in, and the one I spent most of my entire ffxi time in I would say is handsdown the greatest linkshell/guild/group of people I've met in lots of ways. When I think about my time in ffxi, it's joiningofsix that I think of.

5. Did you enjoy this game?
Yes I would say 90% of the time. the other 10% was made up of things like watching cheaters get ahead of me, times when I made mistakes that screwed up other people and anytime I got into an argument with someone. I didn't quit because I stopped liking it, altho now that I look back and compare it with RL - it wasn't all that good.

6. Any comment about this game?
Erm I've said a lot of my thoughts about it elsewhere on this forum lol, endgame is a time sucking vacuum with not enough rewards for the time people commit, or enough variety to keep all the people interested occupied. The rest of the game is pretty good tho I guess.

7. Do you plan to come back?
99.9% chance that I never will. 0.01% chance that I might try it for a month, altho likely that would be a month not as a member of my linkshell.

8. Would you, with the knowledge of hindsight and how to build a time machine- go back in time to when you started playing and tell yourself don't do it.
Good question! (duh i wrote it) NO doubt I would go back and tell myself that, but also me two years ago would not listen and carry on anyay.

Wow I haven't checked here in a while. What's the diff. between quit or retired?

1. You Retried or quit or still playing this game?
Quit/Retired

2. Why?
I took a break and planned on returning but it just didn't seem very appealing anymore. Plus I was way too busy with RL things.

3. Had this game made a big effect of your IRL?
Not THAT much... maybe I would have gotten better grades but I still got good grades. I would hardly turn down doing something irl unless I really wasn't in the mood. I guess I would have chilled with my friends 24/7.

4. Did you make any good friends?
At the time yeah but I hardly keep in touch with anyone anymore. I hardly go on aim nowadays and that's the only way I communicate with online friends. Besides the forum =)

5. Did you enjoy this game?
It was fun while it lasted!

6. Any comment about this game?
Edit: I originally had "Nope" but I do have to say the community in this game was a positive thing and I kinda miss a few people so pm me sometime if you'd like to. I'm interested to see who still goes on these forums.

hey panther hows it goin man?

1. You Retried or quit or still playing this game?

I stopped playing about a year ago.

2. Why?
Lots of pressure from real life people to quit FF. Plus with school starting, I had to take away this distraction. It was easy to quit because a lot of my best friends had either quit or barely played anymore.

3. Had this game made a big effect of your IRL?

Sure. It was probably the most fun I've ever had.

4. Did you make any good friends?
Yea. Yarr, Mikey, Shi, Fatty, lots of others.

5. Did you enjoy this game?

I had a great time. The best times were when I was just starting out, discovering new places, and with my old perma party. The end game was ok in a different way. It felt good to help out.

6. Any comment about this game?
People disagree with me a lot on this, but I think FF11 was the closest game to perfection when it comes to the RPG battle system. I still miss this game, but I know the FF11 I knew is no longer there and replaced by some warped hacked version that I know I wouldn't find fun.

I just wanna see how people feels about this game and talk about it, just for hell of it.

BTW "Retired" or "Quit" you put it in your own word which you pick.

Doing great whisp. \:D/

No I am not planning to quit just yet. Just missed those good old CKD ppl in-game. :(

1. You Retired or quit or still playing this game?

Winners don't quit, they retire : p

2. Why?

I accomplished everything in the ffxi storyline when I retired out of it, killed just about everything, did dynamis, sky, sea, etc etc. I really saw no reason to keep going (TOAU) since it was getting kind of old and since I was playing on PS2 and couldn't claim anything lol. I mean the only reason to keep playing was maybe for equipment which I was sure SE would change every so often (they did) to keep people's money and for my friends. At least I could say I went out in style as I launched my own mini-quest for people to find me and gave away over 30 million gill probably in items. Also the load times and lag was horrible compared to other games. The deal was sealed when I had seek up for like 3+ hours over 2 days on a mellee and no one even sent me a tell. Also, it was just really time to move on, IRL and otherwise, like Mandos I was kind of disgusted when I saw the playing time and thought of other ways I could have used it, yet I wouldn't take it back, I really have no regrets and I enjoyed the game immensely, during the time I played it, it will go down in the Top 2 to 3 greatest games I've ever played on my list.

3. Had this game made a big effect of your IRL?

Definitely, I made great friends, even learned a little JP (phrases, etiquette etc.), also a few life lessons. It was the first game I played where your rep in the community carried weight much as it does IRL, you learn leadership, teamwork, and I think my typing improved immensely with this game ^^

4. Did you make any good friends?

I made a few, but I've been extremely busy with music and the upcoming release of an album lately.

5. Did you enjoy this game?

All the way until the time I retired, however it definitely had times when my PS2 was a hair away from being catapulted into the parking lot of my apartment complex, and only one controller ever got broken. So any game to pull that kind of emotion out of me I'll say I probably enjoyed in that love/hate relationship kind of way.

6. Any comment about this game?

If the game ever went to a private server, where it could be administrated on people that got in, moderated and customized on pop times etc etc, that would be awesome, also it'd be cool if my IRL friends played with me, not one of em did the whole time lol.
I had fun with it and I miss you guys that still play, but I'm glad I'm out of the game to be honest, what I'm doing now is so much more fun for me, and who knows maybe you'll see 'ol Supa on stage IRL one day^^

Still playing

2. Why?
I want to see all of it, no matter how long it takes

3. Had this game made a big effect of your IRL?
Sort of.. my friend got into an in-game relationship so he got absorbed into this non-stop and I didn't like that.

4. Did you make any good friends?
No

5. Did you enjoy this game?
I do

6. Any comment about this game?
Other than random jackasses, its a good game. Keeping PC back becuase of PS2 sucks though.

1. You Retried or quit or still playing this game?

I'd say retired, because I want to come back although it seems unlikely at this point.

2. Why?

I moved in with my mom and my dad wouldn't let me take my PC or the PS2 so whatever.

3. Had this game made a big effect of your IRL?

I wouldn't say so, my best friend moved away around when I first started playing so I didn't really have much else to do. The only thing remotely close would be my friends randomly popping in and wanting to do things when I wanted to play.

4. Did you make any good friends?

I'd say so.

5. Did you enjoy this game?

Very much, until I got to 75 at least.

6. Any comment about this game?

Shouldn't have put it on the PS2.

Retired, gave my account to an IRL friend who had been playing on the same character w/ me (Some of you may know Macabre as Ricky now lol)

2. Why?
Mainly, my grades, one morning I checked my grades online and was like meh I quit, literaly I just woke up and said I quit and have rarely been back online, only if I go to my friends house and to chat w/ a few people

Also I was diagnosed w/ Depression in Novemeber or 05 and I wanted to get back to enjoying life and hanging out w/ IRL friends

3. Had this game made a big effect of your IRL?
Sort of I guess, I just got sucked into FFXI too deep and my grades slipped, I live out in rural Kansas so its not like there is really a whole lot to do so it didn't affect my social life directly

4. Did you make any good friends?

Sure did, though my first friends I made in the game have all quit, when I found out some of my good friends from Fate Sealers had quit and went to WoW I joined them there but since they have rerolled w/ my guild to another server

5. Did you enjoy this game?

Yes and no, community was fun and the first month or two after the claim patch was fun but I really didn't see a point of staring at my TV screen for 3-9 hours sitting at camps

Also the greed really turned me away. Busting my ass for others with little to nothing in return showed my some peoples true colors

6. Any comment about this game?

SE just needs to open their eyes and really focus on what the customer wants, those are the people that conitnually play the game and just listen to the feedback

1. You Retried or quit or still playing this game?
quit
2. Why?
the game lost its shine. it just wasn't fun anymore
3. Had this game made a big effect of your IRL?
there were times when i would play ffxi upwards of 10 hours a day, so yes it affected my rl. the game was too addicting.
4. Did you make any good friends?
i had good friends when i played the game but the only people i really kept in touch with was mikey/tal/yarr and whatever fs people play wow on agamaggan.
5. Did you enjoy this game?
it was fun at first, and even though i played for 2 years it turned into an addiction rather than fun
6. Any comment about this game?
it's way too late to fix this game, that ship has sailed. it was fun from 1-75 but after 75 the game got addicting hoping for that next item or that shiny piece of af2 that's not even good.

1. You Retried or quit or still playing this game?
Retried but with visitation rights i guess lol? I still log on to say hi and stuff.

2. Why?
It was alot of factors Drama being one of them. Also the the relic upgrade. Which i do in a sense consider successful, did blow up in my face. Alot of factors did push me into leaving. But i think what killed it for me was when tal said he couldn't play anymore. The stress and drama was getting to him, and he wanted to back off. I had 2 choices either tell him to continue and watch him suffer or let it go and quit alongside with him. Besides that it wasn't just me merely following him. Considering the work i put into it myself. It just killed it for me and everyone i think understood why i had to back off. Alot of times i do miss the game, but whats left. Yarr left a bit afterwards too.

3. Had this game made a big effect of your IRL?
Yes.. It closed my eyes and then opened them, and then refocused my eyes at the same time. I ignored alot of my friends, but made new friends. I've actually been refocusing who is my friend and who just really has been using me. Hence why i no longer talk to a few of my former friends. I put school aside because of this game too. Something i regret. However i'm going back to school this year. I basically have less than a year to finish college lol So umm why not finish it. Actually i've been getting alot of revealations as to what to do with my life. A new refocus on finishing school and leaving ny have been surrounding me. Also noticing how people are in canada, and the quailty of life.. Is kinda of nice too. Alot of stuff going thru my mind right now..

4. Did you make any good friends?
Yes of course LOL! They've left their marks on me and they know it too. Yarr- Difficult as hell , but can be just as equalily be a hell of lot of fun to hang out with.
Talisin- This kid I think of as my brother Nuff said on that lol
I'd say they left the biggest mark on me, and i plan to continue to be their friend. In fact i have all intention of going fishing with tal's kids, and yarr's kids. Gonna spoil the fuckers
5. Did you enjoy this game?
Yes and would i change anything about it no. Would i change anything about it. No. Like i said the game and some people left a huge mark on and have changed my view of alot of things.
6. Any comment about this game?
FF needed a mouth piece adapter. So it can suck your dick when you get bored. I bet 99.99% of people wouldn't even complain anymore afterwards

1. Have you retried, quit, or are you still playing the game?
I've been psuedo-retired for a long time, meaning I still play but my goals and hopes (and time spent logged on as a result) are very narrow compared to what they once were.

2. Why?
Boredom and dissapointment. I went through a lot of shit trying to solidify dependable "friends" and "find my place" in ffxi but eventually it just became me sitting in my mog house seeking for 12 hours w/o anyone to talk to or do anything with or impress, and even though it was hard to convince myself there was no grander payoff in enduring that, logic got the best of me.

3. Has this game had a big effect on your RL?
Surprisingly no, It may have helped me get out of and/or avoid some friendships and relationships and psychological issues that weren't healthy for me to be focusing on, but overall if it wasn't this game I was playing to kill time it'd have been some other game... killing time is killing time. I wouldn't have played if I had more important things to do.

4. Did you make any good friends?
As good a friends as internet friends can be I suppose. I didn't meet anyone in the game outside of the game, the closest I came was maybe exchanging a few phonecalls, myspace messages, or IM conversations. I met some interesting people, some like me, and had some good times... none of which carried over into my real life.. or really tried to remain true to me over loot goals or w/e else people play for.. so I don't think I can really consider that friendship.

5. Did you enjoy this game?
Sure, I had my fun, and I enjoyed the mindless monotony and kill-time factor of the game.

6. Any comment about this game?
I wish I had a good enough PC around the time of it's release because things were really different for those of us that started when it was released for ps2. I feel like I missed out on a lot of the newness and discovery of the game and likewise each new thing I accomplished that I thought would impress people was just a disappointment when to my shock they didn't give a shit. I guess in that way the players of this game are just as effective in solidifying the addiction as the game itself .. always struggling to get at that carrot that's dangling in front of you.

our perma had a discussion once about nippler versus mikey. we had nippler for like 40 straight parties (like lvl 35 to lvl 57), then one night nippler partied elsewhere. and we recruited mikey to sub for him to fight raptors. then after a few more nippler parties, nip partied elsewhere again. so we invited mikey along, and scyth was taking the day off so we invited sesshoumaru (BST) to party with us. we discussed inviting mikey permanently to replace nippler, who hadn't officially left the perma at that time. shiloh, TS, and i were for mikey. scyth wasn't there but he hated nippler so we knew he was for mikey too. and yarr was for nippler. this was before yarr got to know mikey. yarr was so dedicated to preserving the perma party. its kinda cool to look back to that discussion, and think how good of friends yarr & mikey ended up being.
