Just when Ninjas thought SE finally gave them some love:

*Changes to the ninjutsu "Utsusemi"
In the next update, the player's enmity will decrease when a shadow image created by Utsusemi is absorbed by an attack.

*Changes to Ranged Attacks
Soon, the distance of the monster from the player will determine the damage and accuracy of ranged attacks. This determination will vary from weapon to weapon, as will the ideal distance for maximum damage. In addition, the higher the monster's level is with regard to the player, the less damage will be dealt with a ranged attack. This system is similar to that of melee attacks, but the difference in damage will not be as great.

A score of new material and exciting new improvements awaits in the next version update in mid-July, so keep checking this site for details as the time approaches!

Everyone knows SE never intended Ninjas to be tanks. Eventually they came to accept it, but they were always trying to make Ninja tanking more balanced. Personally I think they should have just made Utsusemi's block rate be dependant on your Ninjutsu skill instead of 100%.

The problem is that Utsusemi will block any attack, even if it comes from a monster 50 levels above you, allowing people to fight stuff they really shouldn't be able to.

The good news on this front is that maybe BLM/NIN and RNG/NIN become better subs? lol.

As for rangers, every other melee has been crying for a Ranger nerf for a long time. Goto any forum and just watch em cry. Although I'm not entirely sure what the update is saying it will do. It's either one of two things:

A) Stop Rangers from standing right next to the mob to gain extra TP from their dagger swings. Because now this will reduce damage.

B) Stop rangers from being so effective on mobs that are kited. This is possible because a few updates ago they already made a change in this area, making Rangers automatically miss if a mob moved out of range before their arrows were fired.

And either way, they're reducing ranger damage on "high level" stuff. Surely people have noticed how effective a Ranger is on Kirin whereas a BLM will get resisted over and over.

I don't think it either changes will stop NIN or RNG being effective in an exp pt but it's a tweak to stop them being so effective on HNM/gods...

I still don't like the nerf SE did to shield users. A shield is supposed to block damage. Maybe SE is trying to make it so ninja aren't so damn invincible now. Who knows. Personally, I think they sit in a room and pick updates out of a hat.

Yeah haha, I agree that the shield change was one of the worst changes that they could have made, especially for a pld tank, not only did they take away some of the damage that we could completely negate with a shield block, but now our spells get inturrupted as well when we block with a shield. Oh well, I think this change to rangers has been a long time coming and is much overdue, if they don't do something, everyone will be ninja, black mage, bard, and ranger. All other jobs would be practically useless and no one would use them.

Ninjas will still be as invincible as they've always been, they've only nerfed ninja's effectiveness when it comes to keeping hate, which has never even been their strongest point. The only people I can see happy with this update are paladins, since they will get more invites from now on. I would also say rangers because they'll lose hate faster, but they get their own nerf to compensate for that.
I guess ninjas will rely more on attack and enmity gear now to keep hate and evasion gear prices might start dropping.

Actually that Utsusemi nerf sounds pretty cool if your a Rng taking hate lol. Too bad for the ninjas though lol.

I think:

a. I agree with ket, it's going to be nerf on RNG vs. HNM

b. SE want you to use gun+bullet. It will not be nerf as bad as bolt. Or specifically, SE is trying to nerf Obow. With the additional of sushi, Obow become the best dmg/gil available... and it's becoming the "only" RNG weapon, mean. . less gil collection

c. Master Caseter Bow (time to stock up !!) will probably going back to #1 on the RNG chart for dmg/gil ^^

d. NIN don't get a lot of hate anyway, so what SE want is that they dont like to see

BLM BLM BLM BLM NIN xxx
on exp party

e. time for Utsusemi:San soon ?

trying to make people using SATA more useful (ie. THF and /THF)

I don't care what ninjas were originally intentend as, they are tanks in the game now whether SE likes it or not... and now they reward them with a hit in enmity for perfect tanking? Good job SE, way to piss off your customers once again. If they wanted to make PLD happy they could just un-nerf their shields and give them another JA or something, or, I don't know, ASK them what they want. They always think they only way to create balance is to nerf things and it's really starting to piss me off.

Look for new and exciting improvements my a#$ :evil:

well think about it, their kinda making this game somewhat more to rl laws type thingys, if you have a shield irl you may not get hit but it takes energy to hold the sheild against the hit, the further your away with a bow the less chance of hitting the target and strength and stuff.

i think this is a good nerf for ninja's. i've always thought nin's to be pullers/dd than a tank. but now a nin/rng can technicly unleash hell on the mob and loose alot of enmity by spaming shadows now i can be a ninja after i get rdm up a lil bit. but im sure a bunch of people are gonna bitch because ninja now has the potential to do alot of damage w/o tanking and they can focus on melee stats rather just..evasion and agi

From what I've heard, the most popular theory on the RNG "distance" change is:

RNG close to mob: High Accuracy / Low Damage
RNG far from mob: Low Accuracy / High Damage

Might hamper RNG solo ability a bit, because they have no way of attacking far away from a mob when they're solo.

Hey, I'm a DRK, so screw the overpowered RNG bastards! ^^

Seriously, though, I've never seen an MMO that makes characters progressively less effective like FFXI does. Only really good to exceptional NIN tanks were able to keep hate properly before this patch, and now it's gonna be a nightmare, with hate bouncing like a rubber ball filled with crack. And they can't introduce Utsusemi: San...I mean, how would that work? 9 shadows, for a total of 18 possible shadows? They'll never get hit! The damage on the mob would have to be slow, but nothing would get through the damn things. No, NINs just got screwed.

Now we just need a MNK and SAM nerf, and DRK will get invites again!

Yeah right.

lol, sam nerf was a long time ago buddy. Mnks are sort of nerfed until 73, then they get exp out the wazoo. personally, if they follow through with this RNG patch, either ppl will have to change their play style, or ppl will invite more regular melee.

And for ninjas: who cares, they still will tank . . . a good ninja can keep hate w/o provoking at each 30sec

Wtf you had creditablity till you said this. Drk are strong. Sam Needs no nerf at all wtf u talking about. I agree with your mnk comment but Sam has rough time as it is. You got that gay soul eater that does 324354 dmg on a WS with SATA.I like the way they went to nerf nin utu but i think they did the wrong way imo. I'm not sure how they should have done it but i think it should have been based off your nin sub ninjisu skill if then it's kind like the spell "blink" not 100% miss for the mob. that way no every job is /nin in ballista.


Btw this nin nerf it only making /nin more hot for bst sub. got to much hate from mob spam utu and loose hate back to your pet. i wonder if u could put your hate down to 0.[/quote]

you lose enmity for getting hit, i always thought that was kinda bull that just toe to toe pld lose hate getting hit while ninjas werent effected, this kinda evens it out more. ninja can hold very good hate if they dont go totally overkill with eva and agi and do nothing with there katanas, this is just even more of a reason to make ninjas balance theyre gear more.

Yeah, that's sort of how I look at it as well.

The problem is that lower level ninjas don't really have as much access to attack/str/DD gear as the higher end ninjas do.

If you dodge an attack instead of having Utsu absorbed, it won't affect enmity as far as I can tell, either.

I guess now it just comes down to rotating Jutsu a bit better, keeping a balance of attack/evasion for enmity and other things. Perhaps they'll include more +enmity items available as well.

People will find a way to continue tanking. It won't be as bad as it sounds.

S-E never said nin will lose as much enmity then they would if they get hit for 400dmg. It might not be as bad as it sound. It's gonna screw me up as much on war/nin when I have to tank if it's bad...oh well.


Nerf on ranger is kinda stupid on HNM...just unnerf other melee instead to make everyone happy. But meh...War damage arent bad most of the time on HNM. It's probably just gonna make kirin fight last longer
