personal opinion, go for a DS hands down. i traded in my PSP towards my xbox 360 (paid off almost half of it so yea). as for RPGs they made Lunar: Dragon Song for the DS, but yea you don't want that :( as much as i love the lunar games, that one blows. go for mainly the GBA games... fire emblem (although i think they play really slow..), the final fantasy games (final fantasy IV is coming out in december i believe), riviera (if you can find it) and there's a lot of others... for the PSP theyre making a few, but all remakes.

however, the DS does have a lot of really great games that have just / are coming out real soon. advanced wars: dual strike is an excellent game. i absolutely LOVE it. the new castlevania was awesome, mario kart just came out and that's a ton of fun, animal crossing is coming out on december 5th (somewhere around there) and that game was really addictive for the gamecube, warioware, super mario 64 remake, etc etc. there's a lot of great games for the DS, whereas all i liked personally for the PSP was lumines (which was awesome), and hot shots golf (which got kinda boring after a while). i heard GTA was good, but i'm not really into those games that much.

as for the whole music and movies thing, it's kinda cool, but IMO it gets real old real fast. as for the buying DVD's for it think about it this way... DVDs on the PSP cost normally $25 (some are 20 at release, but not many). so you could either buy it for $25 for the PSP or you could buy it for $20 at <insert nearest retail store here>, AND get special features with the regular DVD. so yea i would rather spend a bit less and get special features as an option. i won't even mention that normally a PSP will only last for about 1.5 movies on average for battery life.

i work as a manager at gamestop irl so i hear alot about this stuff. just to let you know if you plan on getting a PSP it's gonna cost you a lot more than a DS... if you wanna do the whole music / movie thing you gotta spend another at least $50 or more to get a big enough memory card for it. hope i helped :)

This is the same argument I have with X-box 360 advocates. Yes, the media center features are wonderful, the online components are brilliantly implemented...streamlined and fun. It's well-designed, powerful, you can stream music and movies and internet and all kinds of high-tech pretty things.

I DON'T CARE.

I buy game systems to play games. Period. If I want all that other crap, I've got, oh yeah, a computer. And a TV. And an iPod. And in terms of games, the PSP is a complete farce. A well-conceived puzzle game at launch (which is countered immediately by Meteos on the DS, made by the same guy) and another lame-ass GTA game set in the same city as a previous iteration are about all they've had. And GTA isn't even out yet.

Meteos aside, the DS, on the other hand, has Mario 64, a Castlevania that rivals Symphony of the Night, the best cart racing game of all time (with online play), the impossibly addicting Nintendogs, a brilliant strategy game in Advance Wars DS, unique games like Electroplankton and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, Animal Crossing in a few weeks, Sonic Rush (rave reviews, picking it up on Monday), Kirby: Canvas Curse, and tons of awesome titles on the horizon, including the first ever English release of FFIII, FF: Crystal Chronicles and Zelda: Four Swords (which won't suck this time, thanks to the elimination of that connectivity crap), and a brand new original 2-D Mario. This is, of course, completely neglecting the fact that it has the ability to play every game in the most dominant and expansive library of portable games in the history of the planet, GBA.

PSP sucks.

My Nintendogs have been sitting in that house for about two months now without food and water...

I hope they're okay...

I miss my Sabrina ; ;

Other 3 can die though, they don't listen to me.

These handhelds are EXACT COUNTERPARTS TO THEIR SYSTEM OLDER BROTHERS.

The DS has focused on many original titles, with unique aspects(kirby ftw), and an attempt at immersing you into a handheld game(with both good and bad results as I scream into my DS in a crowded office).

The PSP ports the same crap over and over again with a fresh title, a whipped up story, and quasi-pretty graphics. Oh, but they're still fun...you just feel dirty playing them.

There, choose.

Don't fear. When it comes to computer games, I'm pretty on the ball :P.

I just hate fanboyism, so I come on strong. And bashing Xbox for no reason doesn't take place at all in this thread.

I used IPSP, but i don't know if that's still free or not. it worked pretty fast but i don't know about movies, i used it for music. btw if you use emulators don't use IPSP it'll screw up your emulators somehow (i don't know why but i couldn't use emulators until i deleted everything off my memory card that was put on through IPSP)

I'm gonna ask for a DS for xmas. I only want something to play games on, and the DS seems alot more likely to come out with cool, unique games, while the PSP is more for people who want to use it as an mp3 player, a video player, and for ports of their favorite playstation games. I just want something I can play for like 30-45 min before I go to sleep, or for long trips or downtime at school.

Not to mention that the DS is making games for some of my all time fav franchises, like Castlevania, Metroid, Mario, and Final Fantasy (complete remake of FFIII coming soon!)

The dual screen seems like it will be uber useful for RPGs (menus and other stuff), and also for games that use maps, like metroid and castlevania. I could see games getting very creative with that second screen.

Don't forget Resident Evil..

Nintendo always finds a way to port RE lol. Well this one sounds cool, just reserved it for the Co-oP ftw

I have 2 psp's and a DS.

The psp is nice for its media abilites (movies, music, internet if you can get it to work).... But the games for it are really craptastic.
As a girl gamer I dont really want 5 billion racing games. Let along 4 billion that if i cared i could get on ps2.
What PSP needs are more original games, and different genres. No one's really in a hurry to jump on the bandwagon and produce for it yet.

UMD is still expensive, so are cards for it (if you weren't lucky enough to get the new packaging with 1 gig card /cry). But because you can do a lot more with it than /just/ watch games, I think its really worth while. The mp3 player is almost worth it in itself.

I keep my art portfolio on it too in jpeg form, which is super handy when people ask to see it, i dont have to lug around a physical binder anymore lol. The other one stays in my car and doubles as my radio and a little entertainment device for anyone riding with me.

The DS doesn't do much, its large and kinda awkward, and really...kinda...not very cool. Like not cool enough to whip out in public most times. Heh. But there's a lot of really fun games avaible and you have all of the gameboy library to choose from too.

Nothing is better than the stares you get when you start yelling at your nintendog in a large, crowded room.

So what i used to tell customers of mine, it really comes down to what you're really going to use. Are you expecting it to be something you own purely for gaming? Then DS is your better value. Would you rather have an entertainment system over games? Then PSP is really a nice little gizmo.
Or be nuts like me and carry both around. hahah.
I use my psp a lot but never for gaming, ironically enough. I put off getting DS for a long long time but I actually use it a lot since i got it

. I didn't read too much through this but if you own a DS and dont really use it, likelyhood is you probably won't use either.

Kioko just said why DS is better... they should be about the games, Sony was just trying to out do Nintendo in the handheld area which Nintendo had been the only part of for 15 years. I'm sure Nintendo could have put all of those features on the DS but they didn't, because it's about the games.
