So it looks like in the wake of Democrats taking the House and maybe the Senate, that the oval office decided to throw Rumsfeld under the bus. Can't say I'm all that bothered by it. I haven't agreed with a lot of his policy in Iraq.

It should be interesting to see what happens in the months to come with the power shift in congress.

Bush says Rumsfeld stepping down
President taps ex-CIA chief Gates to replace embattled defense secretary
NBC, MSNBC and news services
Updated: 11:47 a.m. PT Nov 8, 2006
WASHINGTON - Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld stepped down as defense secretary on Wednesday, one day after midterm elections in which opposition to the war in Iraq contributed to heavy Republican losses.

President Bush said he would nominate Robert Gates, a former CIA director, to replace Rumsfeld at the Pentagon. The three were expected to appear in the Oval Office at 3:30 p.m. ET, according to NBC News.

Asked whether his announcement signaled a new direction in the war that has claimed the lives of more than 2,800 U.S. troops, Bush said, “Well, there’s certainly going to be new leadership at the Pentagon.”

Bush lavished praise on Rumsfeld, who has spent six stormy years at his post. The president disclosed he met with Gates last Sunday, two days before the elections in which Democrats swept control of the House and possibly the Senate.

Military officials and politicians dissatisfied with the course of the war had called for Rumsfeld’s resignation in the months leading up to the election. Last week, as Bush campaigned to save the Republican majority, he declared that Rumsfeld would remain at the Pentagon through the end of his term.

Source: Cheney stuck by Rumsfeld
But sources told NBC News’ military analyst Bill Arkin that prior to the election, Vice President Dick Cheney argued with other politicians over whether Rumsfeld should stay. White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten and others said Rumsfeld should be removed, the source said. Both sides agreed the decision would be made after the election, when Bush would make the final call based on how Republicans did.

According to the source, Bush agreed Rumsfeld should be removed after seeing election results favoring Democrats. Cheney then lost another argument, protesting Gates’ nomination as Rumsfeld’s replacement.

Rumsfeld, 74, was in his second tour of duty as defense chief. He first held the job a generation ago, when he was appointed by President Ford.

Whatever confidence Bush retained in Rumsfeld, the Cabinet officer’s support in Congress had eroded significantly. Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., the House speaker-in-waiting, said at her first postelection news conference that Bush should replace the top civilian leadership at the Pentagon.

And Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, who had intervened in the past to shore up support for Rumsfeld, issued a statement saying, “Washington must now work together in a bipartisan way — Republicans and Democrats — to outline the path to success in Iraq.”

The Pentagon offered no date for Rumsfeld’s departure.

Appointee a close Bush family friend
Gates, 63, has served as the president of Texas A&M University since August 2002, and as the university’s interim dean of the George Bush School of Government and Public Service from 1999 to 2001.

The school is home to the presidential library of Bush’s father. Gates is a close friend of the Bush family, and particularly the first President Bush.

He served as deputy national security adviser from 1989 to 1991 and then as CIA director during the first Iraq war, from 1991 until 1993.

Gates joined the CIA in 1966 and is the only agency employee to rise from an entry level job to the 7th floor director’s office. He served in the intelligence community for more than a quarter century, under six presidents.

Bush has considered Gates for jobs before, including in 2005 when he was searching for a candidate to be the nation’s first national intelligence director.

His nomination must be confirmed by the Senate.

Rep. Ike Skelton, D-Mo., who is expected to chair the House Armed Services Committee next year, said Rumsfeld’s resignation “presents an important opportunity for our country to begin a new policy direction in Iraq and in the war on terrorism.”

He encouraged the Bush administration to take advantage of the fresh start.

This was certainly going to happen. He's lost support from everyone, including the military. A Secretary of Defense without the support of the military is doomed. Also, he's got to get out before new committes are formed in Congress to investigate the Executive's obvious misuse of power. I'm very happy. I'd have loved to have seen it happen when it should have a few years go, but I'm happy nonetheless.

I'm happy with Democrats getting into Congress and Rumsfeld resigning. I'm interested to see what changes this makes with the war in Iraq. I am sick of hearing about Americans dying over there, and sick of hearing this "stay the course" stuff from Bush. I don't see anything good with our current strategy. I think if we leave within this next year it will be the same result as leaving 5 years from now, except less dead Americans. Needs more exit plans!

Even though he still left I still almost expect an investigative panel soon (much like the 9/11 commission) appointed to "follow the money" not on the terrorists side but moreso on this side and see how much of it could be tied to a few republicans and maybe even the president. It's gonna be a very interesting ride in the next coming months. With military spending in an area not even the UN wants to be at as well as a shifting "social conciousness about Iraq" there may be some hell to pay from our government. I almost think there may even be a power shift but yet I really am not sure if it'll make any difference for us small citizens, life will probably go about as usual for us.

I'm not for democrats or for republicans but we need people to question a few things happening up there in DC instead of rolling with the bandwagon all the time.

Also as of this year I've changed my voting strategy, I vote against the incumbent every single time except in only the presidency, this I think will keep government going and increase accountability as our representatives under my voting strategy only has a limited time to either succeed in their plans or screw up for only so long, with voters like me, actual incumbents will have to try harder to keep their votes and make more of us happy ^^

This is what concerns me. The Republicans have gotten us into a huge quagmire. The Democrats aren't going to have the clout to just pull us out of Iraq. If they can't suceed in doing that by 2008, Republicans will be back in control.

yeah Supafly. Nothing gonna change in my life really. I think I'll be more affected by the propositions that passed in AZ. It would just ease my mind to see a resolve to the bullshit. I still have to read the news, and reading/hearing some stuff really pisses me off. This made me happy.

Ugh I hope they can change something by 2008...I am trying to be optimistic.

btw wtf is with this Senate race? lol. It's almost like they are trying to make it as dramatic as possible. I was so anxious staying up late last night watching CNN. Now they are still having problems with 1 state with both parties tied. I almost don't even care anymore lol. If the Democrats win I'll give a little "woohoo" and go on with my day.

Funny thing with Virginia, is that the Republican candidate for it is the one who called an indian interviewer "Mocaca" or something else racial. And there was an article earlier about how Democrats in VA were being threatened not to vote, receiving calls in the middle of the night and such.

Allen called one of Webb's volunteers Macaca because he looked Indian. And he made some anti-semetic comments as well. He basically lost an 11 point lead at the time because of it. Now he realizes he lost the Senate for his party. Oh man I bet he won't be invited to any Republican dinnerparties any time soon.

Yah, it's going to be very interesting to see how things play out in the near future. It's obscene the amount of weird bills that have been passed lately, as a result of Bush/congress being able to get away with having the majority in congress.

I wonder if they will be repealing some of the more recent bills. Namely the one that gives the president the right to view the Geneva Convention in a way that suits his needs.

On top of that, with the amount of direct lying, or "Plausible deniability" that's been going on in this administration, I'm wondering if they're going to do something to Bush. The republican-lead house/senate roasted Clinton over the fire for lying about having sex with an intern, but no one died over it. So imagine the kinda heat that could be stirred up over the lies about this war, those internment camps, the wiretapping, all of it...

I'd hope they'd impeach the entire Executive Branch until Pelosi is president, but in order to gain the votes of the conservative, albeit pissed off Republican consituency the Dems had to run conservative canidates. The new blood is pretty likely to vote with the Republicans on alot of issues, I think. Especially social issues.

Yah, we'll have to see. I'd like to think that they won't vote republican, though. I'm just not going to base my opinion on voting issues entirely off of what their campaign looked like. Especially when they knew they were going to be needing to grab extra positions.

I liked reading about the changing political landscape in the US, given how closely matched both our main political parties are, it seems that the only way things change noticeably in the UK is when the US government changes .

I stayed up most of the night to watch the happenings of the election. It was a really interesting, and refreshing, turn of events.

Now the Democrats need to hold this momentum until the Presidential election in '08.
