Personally I really listen to Dream Theater very much anymore; despite the fact that it's fun to listen to a few times and it's certainly fun to watch live performances, it's really souless music. All metal is, really. It's definitely a juvenille, superficial form of music. And i've given it plenty of time. Simplicity can be a sign of perfection, but not like the White Stripes. White Stripes music is so incredibly bland that it almost makes me cringe. It's not their fault that they have no talent, I suppose. Lots of image though. And oh, incest.

And I didn't think I'd ever find a genre of music more souless than prog rock/metal. Then I heard post rock. Holy shit jesus christ is that stuff terrible.

What's not related?

Oh. Well, it's still weird and I don't like them.

edit2: Apparently they called themselves siblings for a long time in interviews and stuff.

Do not really give a crap about the white stripes. 7 nation army was catchy but eh. I hate the dude's voice, I loathe weak vocals altogether, and the sound of the band is tinny. You can have simple music without having a lack of sound and harmony, AC/DC is one such example.

I'm not really into a lot of music. I like Garbage, ac/dc, korpiklaani, sonata arctica, soundgarden, and actually I like Disturbed a bit. I can listen to basically anything but I lack real or strong interest in most music(or rather in most bands), and there's too much to just go and randomly buy some and hope to hit something worthwhile.

Am i the only one that hates the keyboard? And by chance do you like Team Sleep Whisp? I think they stray from that whole verse chorus verse thing also, just much slower the DT

Someone can sing about the Burning fire of their soul or whatever but it's really like comparing some overblown Michael Crichton novel to the understated perfection of Hemingway. While one can certainly be enjoyable and exciting to read (for some people), it will never have the classic timelessness of focused, simple yet profoundly elegant work.

And people constantly try to overstate metal's "genius". I've heard System of a Down fans compare the subject matter to Noam Chomsky's political idealism so much it's hilarious.

edit: The Darkest of Winters is my favorite section of ACoS \:D/ Also, this was the second encore of a three+ hour show, so that accounts for James LaBrie's extreme flatness.

im glad people get out there and make music and have a good time, but when it comes down to it, simplistic music just doesn't stack up. it's like comparing abstract art to realistic art, or nonrhyming poems to rhyming poems. anyone can slap together some crap and stamp it art, even i could, but it's the stuff that actually takes effort and skill that i admire.

Ponuh you are retarded. You just listed Dream Theater in your top 10 lol.

Complexity does not = overblown mess, nor does simplicity = profoundly elegant work. Does a single musical note or chord sometimes fit better than a more intricate version? Sure. But the vice-versa is also true. The best bands/artists know this, not limiting themselves to either simple or complex, but merging the two.

And about metal music being juvenile and souless, you can find examples of that in every genre. Every genre has it's share of geniuses and retards.

No, because you're missing a key component. Sure, things can be super complex, but they have to be TASTEFUL. Metal is certainly NOT tasteful if you have an objective view of music as a whole.

To use the book analogy again: yes, simplicity can be extremely unsatisfying as well. A children's book like Harry Potter, simply written and easy to understand, ultimately doesn't have a lot of substance either (The White Stripes).

Just because music isn't comprised of runs of 64th note arpeggios doesn't mean it isn't carefully calculated and thought out. If you read more critiques of Dream Theater you'd find that one of the biggest complaints (though not shared by me) is that their sound is actually very confined and, dare I say it? Contrived?

And thanks for pointing out that Dream Theater is in my top ten, TS. Perhaps I don't have to fellate a genre or band and still like it. I have criticisms for ever genre and band that I love but that doesn't mean I don't like it. I don't know where this "love it or hate it" shit comes from with you people.

And I'm sticking by my remarks about metal being juvenile.

I dare you to go to a metal show and get on stage and tell the crowd they have no taste in music. I think you'll find very quickly that your misguided opinion is in the vast minority.

The juvenile part of metal is the lyrics (persona of the band is tied to this) I would think. Beyond that its just the music itself (which isn't juvenile). Well some of the lyrics are juvenile (dick and fart jokes are juvenile lol). That doesn't mean they are all juvenile though. I care less about lyrics these days anyways, moreso about the actual music. Some of the lyrics can't be taken that seriously, it is evident in how serious a band like Dragonforce takes themselves (not seriously at all).

lol @ the stage suggestion

How can you say metal is juvenile? i like alot of bands and songs for both the music and the lyrics, some of them have deeper meanings than the shit Justin timberlake spews, but people complain because they can't understand those words.
